Grand Forks Gold

Postby AC-DC » Tue Nov 20, 2007 10:39 am

I just heard Grand Forks Gold dropped out of the league, supposedly due to not enough kids. What, didn't they want to play with only 14 kids like the rest of the league? So are the Stallions now going to have 30 kids?

Supposedly GF Gold only had 1 goalie, so they decided not to play. They rest of the league are happy just to get a goalie.

The Stallions are rostering 23 kids and probably dropped another 10.

There are other teams in the league with only 13 kids and one goalie. Such it up, let the kids play!

There has to be someone to play goalie in this town.

How long has there been/was there a GF Gold team?

I wouldn’t pretend to know anything about the history of Grand Forks hockey, but a list of Jr Gold state tournament winners, from last years program, lists 2 GF teams (North and South) as far back as 1983. You’ll only see a single Grand Forks between 1996 and 2003. The Stallions first appear in 2005. Do the earliest teams have anything to do with the high schools or are they direct predecessors of the current Jr Gold teams?

You must mean the Golds first appear in 2005. The jr gold teams are not affiliated with the HS. The Stallions have kids from both sides of town. So the Golds have only been around 2-3 years? Were the Golds made because the Stallions had too many players?

The Stallions first appeared on the winners list (places 1 to 5) in 2005, the Gold haven't made it yet.
I wasn't sure if the North and South teams from the 1980's had anything to do with the HS or if they've always been seperate. Don't know about the too many kids, but it looks like they've traditionally had 2 teams.

Made a call to a friend who played Jr. Gold for the Stallions and keeps up. The Stallions have been around since about 1996 or 1997. The tournament history says only Grand Forks prior to 2005, but they were the Stallions. There was no Jr. Gold/Midget in Grand Forks that competed in the state tournament for a number of years before 1996. In the late 80's/early 90's they were a park board run program where they had a north side and a south side team, then interest subsided or something, not sure. Now they are all across the city, no boundaries, and are independent of the park board. The Golds formed about 4 years ago according to him, they did not play as many games as the Stallions.
