Don't discount Our Redeemer's or Park River-FL both are very good teams also...that bottom part of the bracket is stacked.

I have only seen a couple of the other teams in the state but if Kindred plays their game of hitting the ball and not making alot of hitting errors... they can make it a long night for the other team. I have not seen Ray play but it sounds like they are just really solid no mistake ball.
In Volleyball you never now what you are going to get from match to match so anybody can win.

no mistake volleyball is easier when you don't see the big hitters. They lost to Our Redeemers and they have a girl that really hits the ball. I would say not as good as Schmidt but more along the lines of Erickson. They also have a pretty good middle hitter and that is who beat Ray. Good offense will beat good defense in class B volleyball. Last year Stanley tried to single block Central Cass and got beat. You see more single block defenses in class B because there just isn't enough hitting depth and you can get away with it. Kindred moves the ball around alot and that is going to give teams tough matchups. The only team in Class B that could block them was Central Cass.

REGION 1
Kindred, N.D. - Four years ago, Kindred senior volleyball players Kellie Schmit and Mikaela Casey found themselves making a big move with the Vikings program.

The pair – then in eighth grade – were promoted to the junior varsity team, and within a year they were starters on varsity.

Schmit and Casey have been in the Vikings’ lineup ever since. They will be announced as starters during Kindred’s North Dakota Class B state quarterfinal against Flasher at 2 p.m. Thursday in Minot, N.D.

“We got the opportunity to play junior varsity and got the lucky chance of skipping C squad,” said Schmit, who plays outside hitter. “So we jumped up and were scared out of our minds.

“We absolutely stuck together.”

As the years passed, Kindred’s volleyball team progressed. The team made it to the Region 1 championship match in 2010 and 2011, only to fall to rival Central Cass both years.

The whole time, Casey and Schmit were committed to get the elusive state tournament berth, playing in countless Junior Olympic volleyball tournaments and attending offseason camps.

“The year before they were eighth graders, we were the last-place team in the district,” Kindred head coach Brooks Dockter said. “It seems like every year we have gotten a little better.

“Their leadership to this team has been immeasurable.”

Kindred (32-10) earned its trip to state by dominating the Region 1 tournament in Oakes, N.D. last week. The Vikings never lost a set and defeated Fargo Oak Grove in the title match.

Following that match, Casey and Schmit were part of an emotional celebration many years in the making.

“It means everything,” Casey said. “We have been working so long to get to this point. To finally get here is a dream come true and to be the first team from Kindred to play at the state volleyball tournament is incredible.”

Kindred’s girls basketball team qualified for state last season, but Schmit was the first to admit the volleyball trip is a little sweeter.

“For me and most of the girls on the team, volleyball is our passion,” Schmit said. “That is what we love. It is all we think about.

“I loved going for basketball, but I am really excited for volleyball because that is the one I really wanted to go to.”

Schmit – a 5-foot-11 North Dakota volleyball commit – has posted 616 kills, 113 blocks and 270 digs this season.

Casey plays the libero position and has collected a team-high 377 digs this season. She is committed to play at NCAA Division II Northern State in Aberdeen, S.D.

“They are the kids that are really eager to play JO (Junior Olympic) volleyball in the spring,” Dockter said. “They are eager to go to team camp and are always the first kids on the court.

“The most impressive thing with them this year has been they have not only been leaders by example, but vocal leaders as well. That has been a big deal for us.”

REGION 2
Park River, N.D. - Carly Myrdal was an all-district setter in 2010, leading Park River/Fordville-Lankin to a second straight berth in the North Dakota Class B high school volleyball tournament.

When this season started, however, Myrdal had no qualms about switching from setter to libero for her senior season. “Our coach knows the sport and what’s best for the team,’’ Myrdal said. “I’m not picky about where I play.

“If that’s where coach wanted me to play, I was just happy to be playing again.”

That’s because the 2011-12 school year was a lost one athletically for Myrdal.

She suffered a torn ACL in the Aggies’ fourth practice of the volleyball season. She’s spent a year away from competitive sports, going through rehabilitation to get back for her senior year. And, coincidence or not, Park River/F-L is heading back to the state tournament with Myrdal back in the lineup.

Myrdal paces the team with 263 digs. She also has 229 assists after being moved back into the setter rotation midway through the season.

“Carly’s our best passer, our best defensive player and our best setter,” PR/F-L coach Sherry Currie said. “At the start of the year, I felt that we needed her defense and passing in the back row. She could get the ball to our setter so we could run our offense.

“When I talked to her about playing libero, she said that if that was what was best for the team, then she was willing to take that role. That’s the kind of player and person she is.”

Myrdal never missed a practice or a match last season even though she couldn’t play. “It had to be hard for her,” Currie said. “But she took on a leadership role even if she couldn’t play. She loves volleyball.”

Myrdal didn’t sit out just volleyball. She also missed the basketball and track seasons and didn’t play softball over the summer. But she came back to again earn all-district honors in volleyball.

“It was really difficult,” Myrdal said. “All my friends played in those sports. And my life has revolved around that — sport after sport after sport, depending on the season. I kind of felt lost, not being able to play.

“I think I appreciate being able to play more now after not being able to play. All the hard work, all the rehabbing, paid off.”

Aggies have different look

For Myrdal and the Aggies, this will be their third trip to the state tournament in the past four seasons. This year’s Park River/F-L team has a different look from the 2009 and 2010 state tournament teams.

Those teams’ offenses were centered more on a few hitters, such as Sydney Larson and Lexi Erickson, Currie said. There is more balance in a corps of hitters led by senior Kirsten Johnson, whose power has helped her generate 407 kills.

Also with more than 100 kills are Sadie Vold (199), Taylor Lehar (170), Morgan Porter (122) and Hannah Swartz (114). Swartz shares setting duties with Myrdal and Claire Walsh.

“We have a lot of weapons this year,” Currie said. “KJ (Johnson) is our power hitter. But Taylor and Morgan are good at finding the open spots, and Sadie is a crafty hitter. Teams have a hard time keying on any one hitter.”

Park River/Fordville-Lankin
Coach: Sherry Currie.
Record: 29-9, Region 2 champion.

State tournament opener: The Aggies play Ray in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m. Thursday in Minot.

Recent state tournament history: Park River/Fordville-Lankin returns to the state tournament after a one-year absence. This will be the Aggies’ third appearance in the past four seasons. Park River/F-L has won one state title (1992).

Regular rotation: Sr. OH Kirsten Johnson (407 kills, 65 service aces, 210 digs, 20 blocks), sr. OH Sadie Vold (199 kills, 71 service aces, 236 digs, 21 blocks), jr. MH Taylor Lehar (170 kills, 56 service aces, 35 blocks), or sr. DS Kendall Slebodnik (113 digs), jr. MH Morgan Porter (122 digs, 44 blocks), sr. S Carly Myrdal (229 assists, 55 service aces, 263 digs), jr. L Ashley Fontaine (46 service aces, 175 digs), soph. S Hannah Swartz (370 assists, 114 kills) or soph. S Claire Welch (250 assists, 42 service aces, 72 digs).

REGION 4
Langdon, N.D. - Options, options, options — the more the better for Brenna Downs.

The senior setter runs a share-the-wealth offense on the Langdon High School volleyball team. And that approach has the Cardinals returning to the North Dakota Class B state tournament after a one-year absence.

“It makes it a lot easier setting when you have so many good hitters,” Downs said. “I have a lot of options. We don’t rely on one or two girls. We’re a better team because of that balance.”

Balance is the word for Langdon.

This will be the 10th state tournament appearance in the past 12 seasons for the Cardinals. It is only the second time in that span that Langdon has six players with more than 100 kills entering state.

In those 12 seasons, it is the first time Langdon has only one hitter with more than 200 kills. Senior Abbey Braaten leads the way with 523 kills. Eighth-grader Madison Hart is 10 shy of the 200 mark with 190 kills. Rounding out that attacking unit are Lyndee Johnson (182 kills), Kaylee Anderson (146), Downs (131) and Miranda Darling (120).

“It’s balance by choice,’’ Langdon coach Rich Olson said. “Brenna is a smart setter. She looks for matchups, which of our girls has the shorter blockers against them. She does a good job of moving sets around.”

Braaten is the Cardinals’ one go-to hitter. This season, the senior became just the fifth player in the tradition-rich program’s history to reach the 1,000-kill mark in a career. The all-around standout is the fourth Langdon player to record 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career. She was a starter on Langdon’s last state championship team, in 2010.

“Abbey’s probably led us in kills in 80 percent of our matches,” Olson said. “She’s a shotmaker. No question, she has power. But she also finds a way to find open spots. And she does it always hitting against double blocking. She can be dominant.

“But we have a lot of solid hitters. We have confidence in all of them. So we’ve been able to move the sets around and keep defenses off balance.”

With five 1,000-kill athletes in the program’s history and several all-state hitters, Olson has had offenses built around a few dominant individuals in some seasons. In others, like this season, offenses have been built around balance. Both styles have merit.

“Every year is different,” Olson said. “A lot of what you do is based on the abilities of your hitters and the ability of your sitter.

“When you have that balance, I think you’re a lot tougher to defend. But you’ll always take that all-state caliber of hitter.’’

A dominant program

Langdon is no stranger to state volleyball tournament.

This is the Cardinals’ second trip in the past three seasons. And they had a run of 11 consecutive appearances snapped by Harvey in 2009.

“That tradition helps our program, no question,’’ Olson said. “These girls saw the older girls going to state. They looked up to those girls. They wanted to do the same thing someday. It was motivation.

“We knew we’d be competitive. We felt we could be in the top four or five in the region. And, fortunately, our kids stepped up and played very well at the end of the season.’’

Olson is skeptical whether Langdon, or any other program, will again see a run of 11 straight appearances at the state B tournament.

“To have a dominant stretch like we did, I don’t know if you’ll see that again by anybody,’’ Olson said. “It’s a tough thing to do. The level of volleyball has gone up. There are a lot of good programs in the state, and in our region. There are a lot of good athletes playing. That all makes it tougher to get to state.’’

Langdon

REGION 5
Flasher, N.D. - Micaela Meyer moved to Flasher this past summer after spending the last 15 years in Oak Creek, Colo.

The 17-year-old was a newcomer on the Flasher volleyball team this fall, but she had a good idea of what she was getting into.

“I knew Flasher had a good volleyball coach and a really competitive program, and that they went to state a lot. I was pretty excited about that,” said Meyer, a senior who had spent the first two years of her life in Flasher before her family moved to Colorado. “I love volleyball and it was nice knowing that I was moving to a town that really supported it. And I already knew some of the girls on the team because my dad is from here and I spent some time with them while we were visiting. It’s tough starting new, but in a way I felt at home. Fitting in wasn’t a problem.”

Meyer fit in quite well with the Bulldogs. The 5-foot-8 hitter has 414 kills, 50 blocks and 88 aces — all team highs — for the Region 5 champions, who will play in the Class B state tournament for the second time in four years and the sixth time overall under veteran coach Jerlyn Gabrielson.

Flasher (28-9-3) will face Region 1 representative Kindred in Thursday’s quarterfinals at the Minot State University Dome.

“I had never experienced anything like this before,” Meyer said. “In Colorado I never even got to play in a region tournament. Everybody here is super stoked about it. It’s a very exciting time and I like to think that I had something to do with it. Every girl on this team had the same goal and that was going to state. We knew that if we worked hard enough we would accomplish that goal.”

When Gabrielson first heard that Meyer was moving to Flasher, she had no idea she was getting such a talented player. Then she spoke with Meyer’s former coach at Oak Creek.

“Her coach filled me in and I really liked what I heard,” Gabrielson said. “He told me what a talent she is and how dedicated she is to the sport. She not only played for her high school team, but for a club team, so she put a lot of time into it down there. Needless to say, we were very excited here.”

Gabrielson felt the Bulldogs would be in good shape this season long before she heard about Meyer’s impending arrival. Flasher had a wealth of experience with seniors Melissa Campbell (280 kills, 47 blocks), Brittney Reinhardt (210 kills, 344 digs, 67 aces), Samantha Leingang (209 assists, 209 digs), Ashton Gullickson (126 kills), and McKenna Schmidt (726 assists, 270 digs).

The addition of Meyer made the Bulldogs that much better.

“Micaela’s talent and athleticism can bring you to the next level,” Gabrielson said. “We had a nice, solid senior group here already. We expected to be very competitive and hoped to be a contender at tournament time. Micaela gave us that extra boost.”

Flasher is on a roll heading into the state tournament, having won 17 of its last 20 matches.

The No. 4 seed in the District 9 tournament, the Bulldogs defeated top-seeded Grant County

3-0 in the semifinals, but dropped a 3-2 decision to Shiloh Christian in the championship match.

The following week, the Bulldogs blanked Underwood and New Salem-Almont before downing Grant County 3-1 in the Region 5 tournament final.

“We played really well in the districts and regionals and we’re confident we can keep it going at state,” said Meyer, who had 20 kills in the region final. “We’re really clicking.”

Gabrielson agreed.

“We’re playing good team volleyball,” she said. “We didn’t start out very well, mainly because we made some adjustments and changed up a few things. We switched offenses, put people in different positions, and changed some things in our serve receive. We just needed some time to put everything together and get everyone comfortable. The chemistry is there now.”

Quarterfinal opponent Kindred is led by 5-11 senior Kellie Schmit, who has 616 kills.

“They like to go to Schmit a lot, but they have good height all the way across,” Gabrielson said. “They are a good blocking team so we have to do a good job moving the ball around.”

REGION 8
Ray, N.D. - The Ray Jays volleyball team has been a dominant force in western North Dakota. Starting Thursday, the Jays hope to ride that dominance all the way to a state title.

After going 33-2 overall, and undefeated in the regular season, the Jays are heading to Minot for the Class B state tournament. They take on Park River/Fordville-Lankin at 6 p.m. Thursday at the MSU Dome at Minot Sate University.

“We’ve been real consistent,” said Ray head coach Michelle Dolan. “I’ve had the same core group of girls for a couple years here and we’ve improved each year for about three years.”

The Jays’ record speaks for itself this season. They have only lost two matches, both 2-1 losses to the Our Redeemer’s Knights in tournament play. The Jays only dropped one game during the rest of their season, when they beat the Stanley Blue Jays 3-1.

In the postseason tournaments, the Jays won just as easily, sweeping through the District 16 and Region 8 tournaments, including a 3-0 game win over the District 15 champion Watford City Wolves in the Region 8 championship match.

Dolan said the Jay success this season has come from the time the team has spent on the court together over the years.

“They’ve worked together quite a bit,” said Dolan. “It’s our team work. They’ve just been a good group willing to try anything the coaches have asked them.”

Park River/Fordville-Lankin were Region 2 champions. They were the No. 1 seed in the District 4 tournament after going 8-1 in the district and hold a 28-9 record overall.

While Park River/Fordville-Lankin and the other teams in the state tournament might not have as impressive a resume as the Jays, Dolan said it’s anyone’s tournament to win.

“This years there is no one dominant team,” said Dolan. “Whoever puts the best three matches together probably will take it. I think we’re all pretty even keel.”

While the Jays are focused on their first round game, looming in the second round of the state tournament is a potential match up with Our Redeemer’s.

Dolan said she looks forward to a chance to play the Knights in a best-of-5 match.

“They’ve beat us in a tournament game, and we’ve been real close,” said Dolan. “We split and then they beat us in an 18-16 game and then the same thing happened in another game. It was a tournament game instead of the typical 3-out-of-5 match. It would be interesting to play them in a full match.”

REGION 3
Linton, N.D. - The Linton-Hazelton-Moffit-Braddock volleyball team started the 2012 campaign without two all-state players from last season, the program’s all-time assists leaders, and one of the best back-row players in the state.

No problem.

The Lions still managed to get themselves back in the Class B state tournament for the fourth consecutive year.

Graduation claimed six seniors from last season’s fourth-place state tournament team, including Kayln Schneider and Robin Weber, both of whom earned all-state honors last fall, and setter Whitney Gerving, who was credited with more than 1,700 career assists. All three were three-year regulars. Another graduate was libero Samantha Gross, who compiled more than 500 digs last season.

However, sophomores Nicole Nieuwsma (hitter), Jayden Gefroh (hitter) and Tiffaney Gerving (setter), and seniors Kayla Jacob (back row), Jessica Schlosser (back row) and Paulina Haak (hitter) teamed up with returning regulars McKenna Flyberg and Kaidra Larson, and a top reserve, Taylor Beck, to make the Lions contenders again in District 6 and Region 3.

“Last year’s seniors were a special group of kids. They did so much for this program,” Linton-HMB coach Jaime Richter said. “We didn’t know what to expect this year, but this group of girls exceeded my expectations. It’s a credit to them. They worked very hard and got better every week. By mid-year, we felt that we had a very good chance of making it back to state.”

Linton-HMB (31-9) will face Region 7 champion Dickinson Trinity in today’s quarterfinals at noon at the Minot State Dome.

Richter said Nieuwsma is perhaps the team’s biggest surprise. Used sparingly last season, Nieuwsma leads the 2012 Lions with 348 kills. She had 55 kills in the region tournament last week.

Nieuwsma, Flyberg (246 kills) and Larson (189) give the Lions a dangerous trio up front.

“Nicole is a good athlete who jumps well and hits with authority,” Richter said. “She’s been very consistent, and so have McKenna and Kaidra. They worked so well together in the regional tournament. Opposing teams can’t focus on just one or the other.”

Setting up the hitters is Gerving, who got her feet wet the first half of last season, filling in for her injured sister Whitney. She has 887 assists this season to go along with 283 digs, 84 aces and 75 kills.

“Having an experienced setter is a big plus,” Richter said. “Tiffaney is only a sophomore, but she looks like a veteran player out there. She controls the whole game and does such a nice job setting everything up. She’s a good defender and server, too.”

Gefroh and Haak have 146 and 57 kills, respectively. Schlosser has a team-high 407 digs, and Jacob 216.

“Everyone has stepped up and played her role,” Richter said. “They’re all making the most of the opportunity they were given.”

Despite the heavy graduation losses, Flyberg had a feeling this would be another special season for Linton-HMB volleyball.

“We played a lot of volleyball in the summer and I could see what we had coming in this year,” she said. “I liked what I saw. Everybody knew what they had to do to get back to state. Not a lot of people expected us to do that, but we did it.”

Richter said Flyberg and Larson, both juniors, and Beck (37 kills), a senior, have been valuable in the leadership department.

“They’ve really held things together, especially in the early part of the season,” Richter said. “They’ve been good teachers and when things are down, they encourage everybody and keep them focused.”

The Lions almost didn’t make it past the quarterfinal round of the region tournament. They trailed LaMoure two games to none, but won three in a row to advance to the semifinals. There, they downed Napoleon 3-1. Napoleon defeated them in the semifinals of the District 6 tournament.

On championship night, Linton-HMB shut down the one of the hottest hitters in the region, South Border’s Madison Schnabel, on the way to a 3-0 victory over the Mustangs.

“The girls came ready to play that night,” Richter said, referring to the region title match. “They refused to lose that LaMoure match and they carried that momentum through the rest of the tournament.”

Flyberg said the Lions are primed to make a positive run in the state tournament.

“Every team at state has a chance to win,” she said. “If we play at the top of our game like we have, we can make some noise up there.”

REGION 7
Dickinson, N.D. - Alyson Schieno had herself a killer of a Region 7 volleyball tournament last week.

As a result, the Dickinson Trinity Titans are in the Class B state tournament for the first time since 2008.

In three region tournament matches, the 5-foot-8 senior hitter recorded a total of 84 kills, including a career-high 38 in a 3-2 semifinal victory over Beach on Nov. 6. Two nights later, she put down 25 kills to lead the Titans to a 3-2 win over Beulah in the region championship match.

Schieno’s 110 kills in Trinity’s last four matches raised her season total to 466 and her career total to 1,235.

“Alyson had an amazing region tournament. She carried our team,” Trinity coach Rayma Braaten said. “She was a good leader on the court. She led us both offensively and defensively, and she’s been doing that all year. She’s a solid all-around player.”

The Titans will face Region 3 champion

Linton-HMB in today’s quarterfinals at the Minot State University Dome. The match is scheduled to begin at noon.

Schieno said her region tournament performance was a result of Trinity playing solid team volleyball at the right time. After losing 15 matches in an up-and-down regular season, the Titans have won five of their six postseason matches.

In the region, the Titans defeated two teams that had blanked them during the regular season — Heart River (quarterfinals) and Beulah. Their semifinal opponent, Beach, was the District 13 champion.

“Our team came together when we really needed to come together,” Schieno said. “It was a rollercoaster kind of (regular) season, but we’re playing well when it really counts. I’m very proud of my team. We’re working so well together now. I would not have gotten all of those kills if it hadn’t been for everyone else doing what they needed to do.”

Schieno, a three-year varsity regular, gave much of the credit to sophomore setter Katelyn Dockter, who racked up more than 100 assists in the region tournament. Dockter is a first-year regular.

“This is the first year Katie and I have worked together, but it didn’t take long for us to get in sync,” Schieno said. “It was different this year because my setters the last two years were seniors, but Katie has a lot of talent and she’s done a tremendous job setting up all of our hitters.”

Braaten said junior hitters Gretchen Weir, Katelyn Grinsteinner and Allison Steffan help draw attention away from Schieno.

“Gretchen, Katelyn and Allison have done a good job up front. They were especially good in the region tournament,” the Trinity coach said. “They’ve opened up many opportunities for Alyson.”

Schieno was in the eighth grade the last time Trinity played in the state tournament. The Titans were on the doorstep last year, but dropped a three-game match to Beulah in the region final.

“It was very disappointing last year. We were close, but we couldn’t close the deal,” Schieno said. “Being a senior I wanted so much to end my high school career at the state tournament. We all wanted to go to state. We had some struggles along the way, but we put it all together and achieved our goal.”

REGION 6
Minot, N.D. - For seven straight years, the Our Redeemer's Christian School volleyball team saw its season end in the Region 6 tournament.

Not this time.

The Knights blew through the region tournament last week, sweeping Rugby, Velva and Bottineau. ORCS plays Region 4 champion Langdon in the first round of the Class B state tournament at 8 tonight at the Minot State University Dome. The Knights have not dropped a set since being swept by Kenmare in the District 12 championship match.

"It's so much work to get here," ORCS coach Sherry Carlson said. "I'm not saying that other regions aren't tough, but our region is tough. We had great teams this year. It could have been anyone (advancing to state). But these girls pulled it together at a time when they really needed to."

Senior outside hitter Ashley Koppinger the District 12 and Region 6 senior athlete of the year and with seniors Emily VanLith and Billie Bangen are no strangers to the stat sheet. But there are other members of the team whose contributions may go unnoticed.

Junior setter Brooke Knutson and sophomore outside hitter Gabi Boeckel have quietly helped the Knights reach their ultimate goal of a state berth. Knutson shares the setter role with eighth-grader Morgan Olson and averaged 13.3 assists per match in the region tournament.

"It's kind of like being the quarterback, so I've been told," Knutson said. "I get a touch on every play. I have to be ready to go and have a clear mind."

Knutson and Olson are responsible for setting up the offense with precise passes to the team's hitters. Most of Koppinger's team-leading kills come from communication with the two setters.

"It's pretty much everything," Knutson said. "If you're not talking out there you don't know where your teammates are or who needs the ball or wants the ball."

While Koppinger, VanLith and Bangen control the front of the net, Boeckel plays exclusively in the back row. Although listed as an outside hitter, Boeckel serves as more of a defensive specialist, digging out spikes from opposing hitters. Boeckel had eight digs in the region quarterfinals against Rugby.

"It's a cool experience just to be able to be a part of this," Boeckel said. "At the beginning of the season I couldn't have imagined it, but it's pretty cool being here."

No current player on the roster has experience playing in the state tournament, but the coaching staff has witnessed it firsthand.

Carlson coached the 2004 squad that finished runners up to Thompson. Among those on the team was Brittany Jacobsen, who currently serves as an assistant coach with the Knights. Jacobsen's team also defeated Bottineau in the region championship match and played Langdon at state. Both Carlson and Jacobsen believe that their experience is an advantage.

"Being there and being in that environment, having that mindset that you've been there, you can offer encouragement as best as you can to the girls," Jacobsen said.

Said Carlson: "They have that perspective of what it's like to be at state when you're at a small school and your opportunities are pretty tough to come by. They help keep the kids focused and encouraged."

Jacobsen said the 2012 team is a bit more athletic than the 2004 squad and the Knights' mental toughness has greatly improved during the second half of the season.

ORCS' quarterfinal match against Langdon will be the second time the two have met this season. The first came in pool play at the Laker Invitational with each team winning a set. Langdon has won two titles since 2008.

Regardless of the outcome, Carlson is proud of what the Knights have accomplished this season.

"Just to see them set state as a goal and regardless of our down times, they haven't lost sight of it," she said. "They decided that's what they wanted and they stuck to it."

Fact Box (from Minot Daily News)
Class B Tournament at a Glance

Peaking teams

Ray Jays - The Ray volleyball team cruised through both the District 16 and Region 8 tournaments, sweeping all five of its matches. The Jays (36-2-1 overall) haven't dropped a set since Oct. 6 against Bishop Ryan in the Laker Invitational.

Our Redeemer's Christian School Knights - After being swept by Kenmare in the District 12 championship match, ORCS swept its three region matches to earn its first state appearance since 2004. The Knights played 46 matches this season, winning 34.

Park River-Fordville-Lankin Aggies - The Aggies (29-9) have won their last 10 matches, highlighted by five-set victory over Hatton-Northwood in the Region 2 championship match.

Langdon Cardinals - Langdon slipped by Carrington in five sets to capture the Region 4 title and remain unbeaten in its last 11 matches. The Cardinals (24-4-3) haven't lost since the Laker Invitational on Oct. 6.

Surprise qualifiers
Kindred Vikings - Region 1 produced last year's state champion with Central Cass, but the region's top-seeded Squirrels fell in the semifinals to Oak Grove. Despite losing two of the first three matchups with Oak Grove, Kindred (31-10) swept the Grovers in the region championship match.

Flasher Bulldogs - Flasher took advantage of upsets to punch its ticket to the state tournament as the Region 5 representative. District 10's top seed lost in the opening round and District 9's No. 1 team fell in the semifinals. The Bulldogs (28-9-3) dropped just one set in the region tournament.

Surging players
Abbey Braaten, Langdon - Braaten finished the Region 4 tournament with 65 kills, including 27 in the championship match against Carrington.

Alyson Schieno, Trinity - Schieno dominated in the championship match against Beulah, recording 25 kills and 32 assists. Schieno had 21 kills against Heart River.

Ashley Koppinger, ORCS - The region's senior athlete of the year compiled 44 kills in three matches.

I think you are right, they are a good team with a great coach and Brooks finds a way to get everything out of his players (and having the best player in the B side of the tournament doesn’t hurt either.) Good luck Vikings from a Grover fan.

I agree, although the championship game might be more of a challenge. Langdon seems to be playing well. It's too bad Region 1 couldn't have sent a few more teams to the state tourney. :D

I knew Flasher wasn't going to much of a challenge when I saw that Maple Valley -- who didn't even make it out of District 2 -- beat them earlier this year.

Well I am guessing right now District 2 has the best Vball in the state. Three of the teams there would not have made it out of districts. Kindred did not play that well. They brought their B game for sure and only their c game for the state title and they still won. I could not believe it. If Region 1 could have sent 3 teams... It would be up in the air for who would have finished where but District 2 would have gotten them all.

Congrats to Kindred on their first State Vball title.
