Re: QRF-like Ranking

Postby NDplayin » Wed Feb 08, 2012 1:42 pm

I like this QRF. What I like most about it is that it ulimately means nothing... as evidenced by that fact that so many teams have seeds over higher QRF ranked teams... but what a great foder for the speculation of the masses! I thought it would be fun to do some averages before tourneys start to see who has the "by the numbers" toughest road to success.... This would be fun to do again between districts and regions using only the qualifying teams.

Average by District......................................... Average by Region

1. District 14- 114.31........................................1. Region 7- 109.59
2. District 4- 110.65.........................................2. Region 2- 102.63

Re: QRF-like Ranking

Postby NDplayin » Thu Feb 09, 2012 1:30 pm

More fun numbers about the 16 district tournaments based on Runs final QRF numbers. Thanks for all the hard work Run!

24- The number of teams with a higher district seed than at least one team with a better QRF in the same district (that's why they play the games :) )

69.7- The smallest spread between a district's highest QRF and lowest QRF (regardless of seed) goes to District 1 (Wyndmere-Lidgerwood 120.0- Oakes 50.3)

153.7 The biggest spread between a district's highest QRF and lowest QRF (regarless of seed) goes to District 14 (Dickinson Trinity 200.3- Richardton-Taylor 46.6).

Highest 1 Seed- District 14- Dickinson Trinity- 200.3
Lowest 1 Seed- District 15- North Shore Plaze- 102.4

Highest 2 Seed- District 14- Hazen- 158.2
Lowest 2 Seed- District 9- Standing Rock- 88.2

Highest 3 Seed- District 14- Beulah- 174.7
Lowest 3 Seed- District 5- Central Praire- 68.1

Highest 4 Seed- District 16- Divide County 116.8
Lowest 4 Seed- District 5- Barnes County North- 55.8

Highest 5 Seed- District 2- Oak Grove- 122.6
Lowest 5 Seed- District 14- Richardton-Taylor- 46.6

Highest 6 Seed- District 13- Beach- 115.0
Lowest 6 Seed- District 5- L-M-M- 45.5

Highest 7 Seed- District 12- Glenburn- 88.7
Lowest 7 Seed- District 5- Ellendale- 43.4

Highest 8 Seed- District 12- Kenmare- 65.0
Lowest 8 Seed- District 11- Sawyer- 47.2

Highest Bottom Seed- District 13- Beach- 115.0
Lowest Bottom Seed- District 5- Ellendale- 43.4

Observations

District 14 has the highest QRFs for a 1 seed, 2 seed, and 3 seed... making it arguably the toughest district to win a championship.

District 5 has the lowest QRFs for a 3 seed, 4 seed, 6 seed, and 7 seed... making it arguably the easiest district to qualify for the regional tournmant

District 1, District 12, and District 13 are all districts where no team can be taken for granted with District 1 having this most parity from high seed to low seed (69.7 spread), District 12 having both the highest QRFs for a 7 seed and an 8 seed (Glenburn 88.7, Kenmare 65.0), and District 13 having the highest QRF for a bottom seed (Beach- 115.0)

slight change to your numbers...and I don't have the time to check who should be in what spot.

Oak Grove would be the highest 5-seed (not 4-seed).

Ok, I edited the Oak Grove correction which makes Divide County the highest ranked 4 seed. My bad, the tie-breaker for all those 3-4 district records must have been calculated incorrectly in the list I was looking at.

That's your call Run... I don't leaving them with end of regular season, because in the post season you don't control your strength of schedule... the bracket determines it for you.

This is how the regions stack up if you average the end-of-season QRF of the 4 remaining teams in each Region. In parenthesis are the two match-ups for each semi-final, along with QRF and QRF rank by region.

Region 7- 164.15 (1. Dickinson Trinity 200.3 vs. 5. Heart River 123.4) (2. Beulah 174.7 vs. 3. Hazen 158.2)

Region 4- 153.33 (1. North Star 196.7 vs. 2. Warwick 167.1) (3. Four Winds 151.3 vs. 5. Carrington 98.2)

Region 6- 148.7 (1. Berthold 169.5 vs. 3. Rugby 136.1) (2. Bottineau 163.9 vs. 4. Des Lacs-Burlington 125.3)

Region 1- 147.83 (1. C. Cass 195.8 vs. 2. Maple Valley 151.3) (3. Oak Grove 122.6 vs. 4. Kindred 121.6)

Region 2- 145.13 (1. Grafton 180.5 vs 5. Thompson 121.3) (2. Hatton-Nwood150.8 vs. 3. Cavalier 127.9)

Region 3- 141.8 (1. LaMoure 171.6 vs. 2. Linton-HMB 151.1) (3. Napoleon 141.6 vs. 4. Edgeley-Kulm 102.9)

Region 5- 136.9 (1. Shiloh Christian 163.7 vs. 2. TLM-M 144.7) (4. Washburn 113.9 vs. 10. Flasher 68.1)

Region 8- 107.1 (1. Powers Lake 133.2 vs. 3. Divide County 116.8 ) (4. Trenton 115.8 vs. 10. Ray 62.6)

Some observations I found interesting:

While the joy of sports is and always will be the unpredictability, Run's QRF numbers seem to be pretty accurate as far as odds setting. Every region still has it's #1 ranked team alive... and only regions 5 and 8 have a truely major suprise, with Ray and Flasher both alive both ranked 10th. Every semi-finalist in every other region is ranked in the top 5.

4 of the 8 regions are featuring a semi-final with the #1 against the #2 ranked teams

Every other region in the state has a higher 4 team average than the highest ranked team in Region 8.

There is a match-up mistake in Region 6. In actuality Berthold plays Rugby and Bottineau plays DLB.

This is how the regions stack up if you average the end-of-season QRF of the 4 remaining teams in each Region. In parenthesis are the two match-ups for each semi-final, along with QRF and QRF rank by region.

Region 7- 164.15 (1. Dickinson Trinity 200.3 vs. 5. Heart River 123.4) (2. Beulah 174.7 vs. 3. Hazen 158.2)

Region 4- 153.33 (1. North Star 196.7 vs. 2. Warwick 167.1) (3. Four Winds 151.3 vs. 5. Carrington 98.2)

Region 6- 148.7 (1. Berthold 169.5 vs. 3. Rugby 136.1) (2. Bottineau 163.9 vs. 4. Des Lacs-Burlington 125.3)

Region 1- 147.83 (1. C. Cass 195.8 vs. 2. Maple Valley 151.3) (3. Oak Grove 122.6 vs. 4. Kindred 121.6)

Region 2- 145.13 (1. Grafton 180.5 vs 5. Thompson 121.3) (2. Hatton-Nwood150.8 vs. 3. Cavalier 127.9)

Region 3- 141.8 (1. LaMoure 171.6 vs. 2. Linton-HMB 151.1) (3. Napoleon 141.6 vs. 4. Edgeley-Kulm 102.9)

Region 5- 136.9 (1. Shiloh Christian 163.7 vs. 2. TLM-M 144.7) (4. Washburn 113.9 vs. 10. Flasher 68.1)

Region 8- 107.1 (1. Powers Lake 133.2 vs. 3. Divide County 116.8 ) (4. Trenton 115.8 vs. 10. Ray 62.6)

Observations:

6 #1 ranked teams remain alive

3 championship games feature the #1 rank vs. the #2 rank... when you combine that with the 4 semi-finals that matched a #1 against a #2, that means 7 of the 8 regions enjoyed a 1 vs 2 matchup.

#10 ranked Ray is the cinderelle upset special. # 5 Carrington is the next lowest ranked and then #4 Washburn. There are three #3 ranked teams, and the other ten teams are a #1 or #2.

Observation:

Based on the QRF ranking...

The #1 and #2 ranked teams are on opposite sides of the bracket.
The #3 and #4 ranked teams are on opposite sides of the bracket.
The #5 and #6 ranked teams are on opposite sides of the bracket.
The #7 and #8 ranked teams are on opposite sides of the bracket.

While it's unlikely, it is possible that the entire state tournament could play out without a single QRF upset.
