thoughts on the east/west crossover...
Bismarck does a great job running this tournament, from officials to concession stands....top notch

Top three teams easily are Bismarck Century, Red River and Fargo North. I watched each of them play and they are the teams to beat. Century lost to RR, but due to their own errors...they probably should have won. The Century-North match was equally exciting with North having errors at the end, so Century prevailed. It looks to be a dog fight with these three teams. Century has Jacobs (30 kills on fri- family outing on sat did not play) Red River has Steffan (40 kills on sat) and North has Larson (had 86 kills for the tournament 56 on Sat- 16 higher than the next closest hitter) and Johnson. Red River has the veteran coach, North has the rookie to Class A. (was at a class B school). This will be a fun year to watch!!!!!

Bismarck, Minot and Fargo South are way way down from past years. Both field teams of rookies with little varsity experience. I was surprised that West Fargo struggled like they did. Great setter in Barta, but their hitters need some work, but don't count them out. Davies, Dickinson and Shanley did well and will be teams that get better each week.

Jacobs didn't play at all Sat? Century has a solid team around here this year I'm assuming...

Who else does RR have other than Hadley? Do they have holes or are they solid all the way around as well?

Little surprised at Bismarck being down with their coach and more specifically their school enrollment.

Bismark Tribune said that Jacobs had a family commitment, I wonder if it was a wedding or something she was not in the stands and neither was her family.

Steffan is the big time hitter for RR, almost everyone else is new, I think.

Bismarck, like South played only seniors last year and never gave their underclassmen much court time, which bites you in the butt the next year when you put no one on the floor with varsity experience.

Bismarck won the State Championship last year playing experienced & team-orientated seniors. I don't think they have any regrets trying to rebuild after a championship season. The season is still early.

Everyone is not new at RR. Annika Strand is a great hitter and overall player and this is her 3rd year as a starter. Anderson(middle) played off the bench last year and attended the same 10 day camp in AZ that Steffan did. Heidi Asche was a defensive specialist last year and this year is right side. Also returning are Bommersbach (setter), Fetsch (libero) and Robinson who is an outside hitter or libero. Unfortunately Robinson went down with an injury on Thursday night. :(

Valley City schedules several area Class B schools throughout their VB/BB schedules. The reason seems to be, in my opinion, to fill out a full schedule...while in the EDC, Valley City's matchups against several of the larger schools (South, North, WF, etc.) tend to count as 2-Point Matches/Games. This is because those schools don't feel the need to play Valley City twice, I think.

i think that initially it was Valley City that wanted to stay with a partial class B schedule and only wanted to play with big schools once as a 2-pointer. Once the schedules are set that way and matches/games being limited no one has wanted to give up tournaments in order to play them twice.

I don't think the issue is that they play Class B schools as much as the fact that they choose to play Maple Valley, which is a very small Class B school who has been underperforming (usually at the bottom of the district in GBB and VB) in their girls' sports for several years. Why wouldn't they choose schools closer to their size? I know VC used to play Central Cass in GBB, but they have not been good competition for awhile so CC dropped them from their schedule. I'm just surprised that Maple Valley would want to play them.

my guess is that it forms a 'natural' rivalry of sorts. They are neighboring school district. Both have struggled the past few years. It creates some excitement in two communities which haven't had alot of it lately in girls athletics.

I was told that the 2 point matches are against the lower level teams. For example, Fargo North wil play VC in a 2 pt. match since Fargo North finished at the top of the EDc last year and Vc finsished at the bottom. It basically boils down to the fact that all the EDc teams cannot play each other twice and so there is a system in place to still get in "2 matches" even though they only meet once.
