FARGO SHANLEY TAKES STATE TITLE

Fargo Shanley senior Trent Olson couldn’t have mapped out a better swan song.

Olson has played for the Deacons for six years, chosen as captain for four years and — on his last day of his high school golf career — snagged medalist honors to deliver the Deacons their first state team championship in 13 years.

Olson fired a two-day total of 147 at King’s Walk on Tuesday to beat the North Dakota state meet field by three strokes as the Deacons snapped Fargo South’s string of seven straight state championships.

Olson also gave Shanley its first state individual champion since Andy Doeden won back-to-back titles in 1997-98.

“This is as good as it gets,” said Olson, who entered the day in fourth place and two shots back of Day 1 leader Bill Carlson of Fargo South. “I’m going to remember this one for a long time.”

Olson, who finished fifth at last year’s state meet, said he was in a similar position entering the second day a year ago.

“I shot a 71 on the first day last year and came back with a 77,” said Olson, who had won one other region meet this season. “I really tried to improve on that.”

Carlson, who shot a 69 on Monday, carded a second-day 82 to finish four strokes back in third place.

Olson’s teammate, Grady Meyer, finished second with a 150 (70-80). Four players tied for fourth with a 152: Dustin Thompson of Wahpeton, Connor Holland of West Fargo and Landon Poss and Coy Papachek of South.

The 1-2 finish helped Shanley knock off the Bruins for the first time since Minot won the state team title in 2003.

The Deacons ended with 604 strokes, while South came in with 611. West Fargo finished third with 624, while Wahpeton had 629 and Valley City ended with 642.

The West Region’s top team finish was sixth as Bismarck St. Mary’s registered a 654. The West Region’s top individual was Tanner Megal of St. Mary’s, who finished 13th.

Although the Deacons were strong at the top behind Olson and Meyer, it might actually be a No. 6 golfer that solidified the team title.

Shanley’s sixth golfer, Mike Storandt, fired an opening-round 72 on Monday to begin the day in fifth. Storandt shot a second-day 82 to finish in a tie for 10th.

“What really got us going was that 72 from Storandt,” Shanley coach Don Johnson said. “If he goes out and shoots an 80 yesterday, it’s a whole new ballgame. He really stepped up his game.”

Olson, who was named senior athlete of the year after the meet, also agreed Storandt’s play was crucial.

“That was a big 72,” Olson said. “I think the best he had shot in a tournament before this meet was an 83. I guess we really all came together at the right time.”

Storandt’s round of 83 on Tuesday didn’t even score for the Deacons, who had four other strong performances. No. 4 golfer Tyler Rivard shot an 80, while No. 5 golfer Cam Hager shot an 82.

“The competition was fun,” Johnson said. “It’s rewarding. I’m happy for the kids; that’s the main thing.”

Johnson said the conditions played a factor.

“It was a tough day,” he said. “It was windy and the greens have dried, they’re harder and they were mowed this morning. The greens were pretty vicious.”

The tougher conditions showed in the second-day scores. Only five of the 77 competitors shot better on the second day than the first.

Grand Forks Red River’s Brady Ohman, the lone Grand Forks golfer in the event, was among those five. Ohman shot the best round of the second day with a 75 to finish in a tie for eighth.

Ohman, who began the day in a four-way tie for 26th place, was one of just four golfers to shoot in the 70s on Tuesday.
