Fargo North champion wrestler Shepherd transfers to West Fargo
By: Heath Hotzler, INFORUM

Another Fargo North standout wrestler is headed to West Fargo.

Two-time North Dakota Class A state champion Anjelo Shepherd has transferred from North to West Fargo, Packers athletic director Curt Jones confirmed Tuesday.

Shepherd earned titles for North in each of the last two years as a seventh-grader (103 pounds) and eighth-grader (112). He is now enrolled at West Fargo’s Sheyenne Ninth Grade Center, and practiced for the first time with the Packers on Monday.

“We coach the guys that are in our wrestling room,” West Fargo coach Kayle Dangerud said.

North coach Nick Magee declined comment.

Shepherd’s transfer comes on the heels of last year’s wrestling controversy involving West Fargo and North.

In December 2009, North Principal Andy Dahlen filed a complaint with the North Dakota High School Activities Association, citing a possible transfer rules infraction by the family of West Fargo wrestlers Tyler and Preston Lehmann.

Preston transferred from North and Tyler came from Minnesota wrestling power Apple Valley.

After an investigation, the NDHSAA ruled that the parents did not break the rules. Tyler graduated and Preston is a currently a sophomore with the Packers.

According to the NDHSAA bylaws, a family must totally vacate its existing home and move into a new school district to be eligible immediately to participate in activities.

If there isn’t a change in residence, an athlete is required to sit out varsity competition for 180 school days. Jones said Shepherd is immediately eligible.

The Packers had a dual meet at Grand Forks Central on Tuesday night.

However, Jones said Shepherd will practice for a week before beginning competition. West Fargo is scheduled to wrestle a dual at Fargo South on Jan. 13.

The Packers ended Bismarck’s 10-year run as Class A state dual champs with a 36-30 win against the Demons in last year’s state dual finals.

West Fargo is ranked No. 3 in the latest state poll and No. 1 in the Eastern Dakota Conference.
