Central Cass 55, Linton 41

The No. 5-ranked Squirrels, and 6-foot junior Taylor Kraft, were too tough for the No. 6-ranked Lady Lions to contain.

Kraft torched the net, converting four three-pointers and ending the contest with a game-high 25 points to hand Linton its second loss of the season.

“This was why we wanted to play this game. We weren’t worried about winning or losing, we just wanted to focus on having a good overall game and whatever happened, happened,” Central Cass coach Barb Kraft said. “We wanted to play a team that was getting the same respect as we were from the rest of the state.”

Kraft stepped outside and drilled two threes in the first period to help the Squirrels take command 13-6 after one. A few key turnovers by Linton in the first 8 minutes contributed to a 13-2 lead with 2 minutes to go before the second.

Linton cut the Central Cass lead to within two points (20-18) with 2:47 to go in the second, but buckets by Kraft, Hannah Breske and Courtney Dixon down the stretch produced a 26-21 Squirrels’ lead at the break.

Linton’s Lacey Ryckman, who led the Lions with 15 points, picked up her third foul on back-to-back illegal screens with 3:42 remaining in the second and was forced to sit until the third. Ryckman had six points in the first half. Linton only trailed 19-17 when Ryckman was sent to the bench.

Central Cass also held Linton’s Alexis Jasper to just nine points in the contest.

“We do focus a lot on the defensive end, that’s the end we can control,” Barb Kraft said. “We’re not always going to shoot the ball well, and our defense helped us through.”

Kraft all but put the game away in the third, connecting on her other two treys of the game and scoring 12 in the period. Central Cass led 46-32 after three.

With the win, Central Cass upped its overall record to 15-1, while Linton drops to 11-2.

Central Cass 55, Linton 41

Central Cass 13 26 46 55
Linton 6 21 32 41

Central Cass — Taylor Kraft 25, Courtney Dixon 12, Hannah Breske 9, Kamie Roesler 8, Madison Gegelman 1. Totals: 19 FG, 13-20 FT, 17 fouls. Three-pointers: Kraft 4.

Linton — Lacey Ryckman 15, Alexis Jasper 9, Paula Nagel 7, Christa Nagel 5, Kayln Schneider 3, Nicole Hulm 2. Totals: 15 FG, 10-17 FT, 15 fouls. Three-pointers: P. Nagel 1.

Records: Central Cass 15-1; Linton 11-2.

A very nice win by Central Cass. I was very impressed with their defense. The big question for Linton is how they will respond on Thursday night against KC - huge rivalry game, not so sure about it being a big District game. (These two teams are the class of District 6 and barring a major upset will meet in the District Championship game and I don't think who is ranked #1 or #2 will matter in getting to that game.) Congrats to Central Cass, I look forward to seeing them play again this year.

Big win for Central Cass. Listened to it on the radio and sounded like Linton didn't even want to play. Two good teams battling though. Nice to see. You are correct, Thursday night KC vs Linton in Linton.. 1-2 in district and region

It was a close game until middle to end of third quarter - seems like turnovers are hurting Killdeer they have the height, talent and athleticism but seems like they are coming out after halftime totally deflated - and there are some very questionable coaching decisions that I think are hurting the Cowboys but still look to see them come out tough in the tournaments. Hazen played excellent defense that is what won the game for them!!

I don't understand how Central Cass and Hankinson can both have one loss, w/ Central Cass's coming from Hankinson, yet CC is ranked above Hank?

Hankinson, while their only loss is to the undefeated (and ranked first in SD in their class) Sisseton, has had not very convincing wins over many teams they should have had no trouble with!!

True, here's some examples:

Central Cass beat FCT by 17 (55 - 38). Hankinson beat FCT by 1 on a last-second shot.

Central Cass beat previously #6 ranked Linton by 14 last week.

A few things Hankinson knows is that getting through Region 1 is tough, and they have already beaten Central Cass as well as every other team they have faced. It is definitely in Central Cass' mind.
