Also with the new style of the Region Qualifier the predictions get a little tougher for District 2! I see CC and FSHP going to the Championship...but after those two teams any seed could beat any other seed so it is tough to predict that right now! Yes, it's possible that Northern Cass could lose their first game! They sure have had an up & down season. I think it's pretty safe to say Central Cass and FSHP will be the top 2 in District 2 and Hankinson & FCT will be the top 2 in District 1, but after that, anything goes! It will be important to do well in districts and get a good seed, because regionals is going to be so tough.

I would agree that Maple Valley could upset Northern Cass, however, Kindred beating Central Cass is highly unlikely. And I think the Squirrels will get the title over FSHP. We will find out in a few days!

I have a tough time picking kindred as the upset team--because their guard play just isn't good enough. Central Cass and FSHP are the teams to beat, and I pick C. Cass to win to district. I just think those kids have played in enough big ball games between basketball (last year) and volleyball (this year) that it's tough to pick against them.

I agree that Kindred will not beat Central Cass, but do pick them to win the first round game over Richland which will cause a lot of work for Richland to get into Regionals. Maple Valley will be in. Central Cass should win, but that school has a history of not winning the big games when they are the underdogs. CC is the #1 seed, but FSHP finished higher in the state rankings. But you are right, we will find out soon, and I just hope the district gets the best teams through.

Lidgerwood vs. North Sargent and Oakes vs. Lisbon are up for grabs. I'll go out on a limb and take North Sargent and Lisbon in tight ones, and slight upsets, to close out round one.

I have a feeling the FSHP girls are going to come out ready to play...because they are obivously very mad about the game on saturday. If they come out ready to play they should have no trouble in advancing to the region tournament.

Yes, I believe the higher seed takes 3rd, so if FSHP wins, it will be them. Regardless, I suspect they will have to play either FCT or Hankinson first in regionals, so that will be tough for them.

This is the first year our district has done the "regional qualifying" games as opposed to taking just the top four places. This way, you have to win 2 games to get to regionals, before, if you got 4th place, you got to go to regionals even with a 1-2 district tourney record. I think it was a good change.

Class B, District 2 girls basketball: Central Cass claims title

When pushed, Central Cass responded Monday at the Fargo Civic Center.

Trailing by five points early in the second half, the Squirrels answered with 17 of the next 19 points.

That surge sparked Central Cass to a 46-37 victory against Northern Cass for the North Dakota Class B, District 2 girls basketball championship.

The Squirrels (19-3) won their second consecutive district title.

“When we face a challenge, we step up to a challenge,” said Central Cass sophomore Taylor Kraft, who scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. “When we saw we were down, we knew we had to step up.”

Northern Cass (13-9) scored the first five points of the second half to take a 25-20 lead after Kalai Lundquist hit a 15-footer with 5 minutes, 43 seconds to play in the third quarter.

From that point, the Jaguars went scoreless for nearly seven minutes.

“All of a sudden, Central Cass started to take it at us and we stood flat-footed,” Northern Cass coach Jodi Zieske said. “We had a stretch where the girls stood around and watched the game for a little bit.”

Squirrels senior Terese Boeder started the game-changing run, hitting a

15-footer from the left wing with 4:25 to play in the third. Senior Ashleigh Nesemeier capped the rally with a short jumper on the baseline. That shot staked Central Cass to a 37-27 lead with 5:38 to play in the fourth quarter.

“As it’s always been this year, our defense fuels our offense,” said Central Cass coach Barb Kraft, who was named District 2 coach of the year. “I think our defense started to tighten up a little bit.”

Lundquist paced the Jaguars with 10 points and nine rebounds.

“We just build on our teamwork because we had great teamwork this whole tournament,” Zieske said.

Central Cass earned a No. 1 seed for the Region 1 tournament, which starts next Monday at Fargo Civic Center. Northern Cass is the No. 2 seed.

“There is no doubt about it, this helps our confidence,” Barb Kraft said.
