Looks like Hankinson is playing without Casey Geffre indefinately. This could really hinder them post-season if she is still out.

Pirates hold off tenacious Falcons
Hankinson’s girls basketball team may have lost its leading scorer, but it certainly has kept its composure.
By: By Kerry Collins , INFORUM

Hankinson’s girls basketball team may have lost its leading scorer, but it certainly has kept its composure.

The Pirates withstood waves of comebacks by Park Christian on Thursday, outlasting the Falcons for a 69-65 road victory.

“It speaks volumes for the girls because they showed a lot of poise,” Hankinson coach LeAnn Fossum said. “We stayed composed and didn’t panic against a good team.”

Junior Casey Geffre is out indefinitely with a knee injury, but the rest of the Hankinson lineup picked up the slack.

Three players hit double figures in scoring, led by Cody Geffre’s 17 points. Chloe Wahl had 16 and Caitlyn Stein had 12.

The Pirates (10-2) led by seven points at halftime, and stretched it to as many as 12 with 12 minutes, 8 seconds to play.

But the Falcons (11-4) cut it back to four at 51-47 exactly two minutes later, and then spent the rest of the game bobbing back and forth from down seven or eight to down three or four.

“That was a tough game. It really was,” Park Christian coach Lisa Breiland said. “You have to give your hats off to Hankinson for the way they played defense, and they never got rattled.”

The Hankinson defense certainly rattled the Falcons in the first half – to the tune of 18 Park Christian turnovers.

“We had a balanced offense that got us out in front, and we played awesome, annoying defense,” Fossum said. “But they never quit.”

The Pirates also shut down Emma Kiemele in the first half, holding her scoreless.

But the senior standout was the reason Park Christian was in the game in the second half. Kiemele scored 17 points after the break, and finished with 18 rebounds in the game.

Her 3-pointer with 17 seconds left cut it to 67-64, but Stein hit a pair of free throws with six seconds left to wrap up the win.

“Their defense was so aggressive right at the start, and we didn’t even get settled when we did get into our half-court set,” Breiland said. “We did a better job in the second half, and we had to.”

Casey Geffre may have been missing, but Fossum said that she was happy with the way the team reacted with the balanced effort and with the shorter bench.

“We had one sub less, and that’s a big player to miss,” Fossum said. “It was a difficult situation, and they really responded.

“We don’t know how long she’ll be gone, so this was good for us.”

yeah the injury occurred on Tuesday night against Oak Grove!! Geffre went up for a shot and was blocked by two Grover players and then came down very awkwardly!! She was able to walk herself off the court; but trust me it did not look good at all when it happened...it looked like a possible ACL injury!!

speaking of that gym, is that pretty nice? Central Cass girls are going to be tough to beat come post season. I think Central Cass has probably the two best coaches in Region 1 for boys and girls and that sure doesn't hurt come tournament time. Anything can happen though, Kraft is going to have her work cut out for her if she makes it to the promise land.

Well, I wasn't going to talk about that gym, but since you asked... it is nice enough. Definitely better than their "old" new gym, which was waaaay too small (terrible to watch VB in, visiting fans couldn't sit in the bleachers during warm-ups because the pep band moved in, etc.). However, the new gym was not designed well for those sitting on the visitors side. They did not make enough room for the scorers table and the teams so the bleachers are are pushed in from the floor. The only place the bleachers go all the way to the floor is at the end. Well, when Central Cass is there, the gym is packed and you can't very well walk up the steps on the end and make your way to the other end (no one is allowed in the hallway so that you can come in a different way). So you have to squeeze behind the NC bench (moving their chairs out of the way if no one is there) then hoist yourself up a stacked bleacher to get up. I watched many older fans really struggling to get up the bleachers and couldn't do it without help. Poor design! And maybe it isn't a factor when other teams are there, I'm sure we are the largest fan base to attend games there, but really, someone wasn't thinking when they decided how large to make it.

I think they could do the same type of article on Central Cass. I don't remember the last time the girls made it to state, but it was probably also back in the 70's. And I think they've only been there once.

F-C-T girls seek a new banner
By: Heath Hotzler , INFORUM

First-year Fairmount-Campbell-Tintah girls basketball coach Jay Townsend isn’t sure about the particulars of his program’s history.

He knows only what he sees in the school’s gymnasium every day.

It’s a banner commemorating the school’s 1975 state tournament appearance. He’s not even sure how the team finished.

For the record, Fairmount didn’t make it to the consolation finals. In 1975, the 7th and 8th place finishers were not recorded.

Townsend’s lack of historical reference can be forgiven.

After all, he’s got to tend to the present.

The Rebels, who advanced to the Region 1 title game two years ago and finished third in the region last season under former coach Dan Schmit, are off to a 14-0 start.

“As a team I think we play better (than last year),” said Townsend, an assistant at

F-C-T the last two seasons. “Defensively, I think we are better. We look to push it a little more.”

The Rebels have been led this season by senior forward Kali Luick. Luick recently scored her 1,000th career point. She currently has 1,014.

Luick is averaging 10 points and 13 rebounds per game.

“She can rebound well, she can dribble well,” Townsend said. “Each girl kind of compliments each other.”

Sophomore guard Kenzie Church has improved her scoring from last year to make up for the loss of graduated senior Sammi Schmit, who averaged 17 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks and four steals a game last season.

Thanks to some hard work over the summer, Church has gone from 13 to 23 points a game.

Katie Campbell is at 13 points, and junior point guard Jordan Campbell averages seven points and five assists.

The Rebels’ next two games are against Region 1 contenders Hankinson today and Central Cass on Monday. F-C-T has six regular-season games remaining.

“I would say 14-0 was not expected,” Townsend said. “But I knew we would be very good.”

Central Cass is really overdue. They consistently have a nice team but can't really finish it off at tournament time. I am curious how many times they have even made the Regional tournament. I know they did last year.

We got second at regionals last year and I remember getting second at regionals back several years ago when the older Gegleman (Lyndsey) and Nelson (Rachel) girls were playing. Now it's their sisters' turns -- hopefully they can make it to state. I know it has been a goal of Mrs. Kraft's for awhile. Her daughter Taylor has 2 more years after this one to do it.

Always makes for a nicer story when it's a small school. I imagine most people could care less when the big schools struggle.

Oak Grove spots Richland a 13-0 lead in the 1st quarter and battles back with a strong 2nd half. Game was a lot closer at the end then the score depicts.
