Maple Valley pulls off upset

Published Sunday, February 10, 2008 Maple Valley used a strong fourth quarter to pull off the upset of the N.D. Class B girls District 2 tournament so far.
The Raiders outscored the top-seeded Northern Cass Jaguars 21-11 over the final eight minutes to defeat the Jaguars 58-52 in one semifinal game.
“We had some experience out there,” Maple Valley coach Jim McDaniel said of his team’s four seniors. “They’re all pretty much coaches out there on the floor. When it got tight I thought we held our composure very well.”
The Raiders rebounded after struggling at times in the third quarter, where Northern Cass used a pressure defense to force the Raiders into turnovers and converted them into points. But in the fourth quarter, Maple Valley took much better care of the ball as they secured the victory.
The Raiders received a boost when Northern Cass leading scorer Brittany Olson picked up her fourth foul early in the quarter and fouled out midway through the period.
Olson led the Jaguars with 14 points.
Mariah Smith paced the Raiders with 17 points and Kristen Killoran and Kelsey Steidl each added 15.
