Just what I thought would happen... Kristin Killoran came to play. It's hard to stop her when she gets going.
Central Cass beat FSHP by about 16. The Spartans were never really in the game, not impressive at all. So it will be Northern Cass vs. FSHP for 3rd and Central Cass vs. Maple Valley for 1st on Monday.
I thought Smith's play down the stretch was the difference for Maple Valley.

It was hardly a miracle shot. It was a fast break lay-up by Abby Sprunk. The Squirrels haven't been in the district championship game for a long time, they're going to want the win. Good luck Squirrels! It should be a good one!

It was a great game, and I'm happy for the Squirrels. I just hope they can keep it up through the Regional Tournament.
Also, I don't get why everyone thinks Killoran is such a great basketball player. Now I'm not saying Killoran isn't athletic or talented, cause she is very fast and can jump higher than anyone else on the court usually, I just don't think she's as great as everyone says she is. She is a glorified ball hog just like Mandi Bindas of Kindred. All either of them do is drive in and throw it up and sometimes it goes in, any team that can play half way decent defense can stop both these players in their tracks. I would take Mariah Smith over Killoran any day, she's not as out of control as Killoran and takes great shots when it's needed. If it wasn't for Smith, I don't think MV would've beat NC in the semi-finals.
I didn't want to say it, but I'm glad you did. Here's one person who agrees with you.

i'm going to disagree, i would not take smith over killoran anyday, mainly because she is the best female athlete in class b. she shoots alot, oh well, she's still shooting 48 percent. averaging 26 points 8 rebounds and 5 steals, she hustles extremely well on defense. you think mariah smith would even be that successful if killoran wasnt there? no. because defenses key on killoran leaving the open shots for smith.
ClassBEast wrote:I agree that Killoran is not a great shot from the outside or the freethrow line. Outside shooting is definitely her weak point. But what she does have is the ability to jump and catch a pass that you were trying to throw over her head, sneak behind you and steal the ball you thought you had control of, and drive to the basket, twisting and turning and drawing a foul almost every time. Granted, a lot of these drives are wild and no way are going in, but she's drawing a foul and she's making the opponent nervous. You can't have any lazy passes if she's around. You can't just let the ball go out-of-bounds if she's behind you, because she'll snatch it up and be gone before you know it. You always have to know where she is, because if you don't, she'll make you pay for it. Is she the best basketball player in the state - no. But she is an amazing athlete, pure and simple, and most teams would be thrilled to have her on their team.

I stick by my opinion that Smith is better, especially being she is only a soph. who has stepped up for MV when Killoran is shut down. She can shot from all over the court, where as with Killoran her shooting percentage falls drastically the further she gets from the basket; 11% (4/35) from 3-point land is a horrible percentage. Killoran should have a way higher shooting percentage than she does considering a majority of her shots are no more than 5 feet from the hoop or are layups. She missed atleast 5 layups in the game against CC, and in the long run those easy bunny shots could've helped them or possibly won them the game.
Smith avgs 12.8 ppg, 50% 2-pt%, 30% 3-pt %, 61% ft%, 7 rbpg, 2 stls & 2 TO pg, 1 ast pg. Killoran is at 25.8 ppg, 48% 2-pt %, 11% 3-pt %, 44% ft%, 8 rb pg, 4 stls & 4 TO pg, 2 ast pg. Killoran may have her beat in scoring, but all around Smith is way better and like I said she's only a soph. compared to Killoran who's a senior. I'd rather have the consistency of Smith than the hot-cold play you get from Killoran.
