District 2

Postby basketball4life » Thu Jan 31, 2008 11:02 pm

I see N. Cass beat FSHP this evening in a close one. NCass should be 1st, FSHP 2nd, CCass 3rd,
but who will round out the rest? I know Oak Grove will probably be 8th. But will Enderlin or Kindred be 7th and MV and Richland 4 and 5 ??

I think pairings come out today, right? Here's my guess:

#1 Northern Cass
#2 FSHP
#3 Central Cass
#4 Richland
#5 Maple Valley
#6 Enderlin
#7 Kindred
#8 Oak Grove

I guess I'm not sure who won when Enderlin and Kindred played. The score isn't on the NDHSAA web site.

I agree with you on Northern Cass but I think Central Cass will win in the other game. Though I very much like FSHP, I think CC will effectively use their post play to win this game. I also believe they will have a defensive intensity that I believe was probably missing the last time these two teams met. CC had just knocked off Hankinson so I believe they probably entered the FSHP game a bit flat. I do not think that will be the case tonight. However, FSHP has a scrappy team and I would not be totally surprised if they proved me wrong.

Just what I thought would happen... Kristin Killoran came to play. It's hard to stop her when she gets going.

Central Cass beat FSHP by about 16. The Spartans were never really in the game, not impressive at all. So it will be Northern Cass vs. FSHP for 3rd and Central Cass vs. Maple Valley for 1st on Monday.

I thought Smith's play down the stretch was the difference for Maple Valley.

Smith led Maple valley with 17 , killoran and kesley steidl followed with 15 each.

I agree, when someone who normally gets 10% of your points gets 30% of your points, they are the difference, especially if that comes late in the game.

Maple Valley pulls off upset
Brian Kimmes, The Forum
Published Sunday, February 10, 2008

Maple Valley used a strong fourth quarter to pull off the upset of the N.D. Class B girls District 2 tournament so far.

The Raiders outscored the top-seeded Northern Cass Jaguars 21-11 over the final eight minutes to defeat the Jaguars 58-52 in one semifinal game.

“We had some experience out there,” Maple Valley coach Jim McDaniel said of his team’s four seniors. “They’re all pretty much coaches out there on the floor. When it got tight I thought we held our composure very well.”

The Raiders rebounded after struggling at times in the third quarter, where Northern Cass used a pressure defense to force the Raiders into turnovers and converted them into points. But in the fourth quarter, Maple Valley took much better care of the ball as they secured the victory.

The Raiders received a boost when Northern Cass leading scorer Brittany Olson picked up her fourth foul early in the quarter and fouled out midway through the period.

Olson led the Jaguars with 14 points.

Mariah Smith paced the Raiders with 17 points and Kristen Killoran and Kelsey Steidl each added 15.

Maple Valley is going to win the D2 title tomorrow night against Central Cass. The combination of Killoran and Smith will get it done for the Raiders. The odds have been against MV all year and they have taken their bumps-but this team is coming together just at the right time. This will be a dangerous team in the Region Tournament. Good Luck tomorrow night Raiders!

Getting defensive
Brian Kimmes, The Forum
Published Tuesday, February 12, 2008

Coaches talk all the time about making adjustments at halftime and coming out strong in the third quarter.

The Central Cass Squirrels took that to heart when they captured the North Dakota Class B District 2 class girls basketball championship Monday night at the Fargo Civic Center.

The Squirrels used a stifling third-quarter defense to defeat Maple Valley 48-41.

“They’ve been responding after halftime when I’ve been talking about (third quarter defense),” Central Cass coach Barb Craft said.

For the tournament, the Squirrels gave up only eight points total in the third quarter in three games, including two against the Raiders.

“They’ve just come out that third quarter and have just responded very well this year to that,” Craft said.

Central Cass needed to pick up the defensive intensity to stop Maple Valley’s Kristen Killoran, who scored 16 of her 22 points in the first half.

“We knew we had to come out strong because (of) Killoran,” said Abby Sprunk, who finished with 11 points for the Squirrels. “She’s feisty. She’s going to get the ball. We knew we just had to get the ball and do what we do.”

Killoran was held scoreless in the third quarter as the Squirrels turned a three-point halftime deficit into a six-point lead.

“They were really sagging in. They really stepped up their defense in the third quarter and we kind of came out flat,” Killoran said.

With the district tournament now behind them, both teams look to the Region 1 tournament next week.

“I think we’re going to be out for teams after this,” Killoran said. “Teams don’t really look at us as a team to beat, but we like to be the team to beat others.”

Central Cass enters the region tournament as the District 2 top seed and with momentum.

“We’re really excited to get into the regionals,” Craft said. “We’re really glad to have that number one seed from the district too.”

It was a great game, and I'm happy for the Squirrels. I just hope they can keep it up through the Regional Tournament.

Also, I don't get why everyone thinks Killoran is such a great basketball player. Now I'm not saying Killoran isn't athletic or talented, cause she is very fast and can jump higher than anyone else on the court usually, I just don't think she's as great as everyone says she is. She is a just like Mandi Bindas of Kindred. All either of them do is drive in and throw it up and sometimes it goes in, any team that can play half way decent defense can stop both these players in their tracks. I would take Mariah Smith over Killoran any day, she's not as out of control as Killoran and takes great shots when it's needed. If it wasn't for Smith, I don't think MV would've beat NC in the semi-finals.

I didn't want to say it, but I'm glad you did. Here's one person who agrees with you.

i'm going to disagree, i would not take smith over killoran anyday, mainly because she is the best female athlete in class b. she shoots alot, oh well, she's still shooting 48 percent. averaging 26 points 8 rebounds and 5 steals, she hustles extremely well on defense. you think mariah smith would even be that successful if killoran wasnt there? no. because defenses key on killoran leaving the open shots for smith.

I stick by my opinion that Smith is better, especially being she is only a soph. who has stepped up for MV when Killoran is shut down. She can shot from all over the court, where as with Killoran her shooting percentage falls drastically the further she gets from the basket; 11% (4/35) from 3-point land is a horrible percentage. Killoran should have a way higher shooting percentage than she does considering a majority of her shots are no more than 5 feet from the hoop or are layups. She missed atleast 5 layups in the game against CC, and in the long run those easy bunny shots could've helped them or possibly won them the game.

Smith avgs 12.8 ppg, 50% 2-pt%, 30% 3-pt %, 61% ft%, 7 rbpg, 2 stls & 2 TO pg, 1 ast pg. Killoran is at 25.8 ppg, 48% 2-pt %, 11% 3-pt %, 44% ft%, 8 rb pg, 4 stls & 4 TO pg, 2 ast pg. Killoran may have her beat in scoring, but all around Smith is way better and like I said she's only a soph. compared to Killoran who's a senior. I'd rather have the consistency of Smith than the hot-cold play you get from Killoran.

i think killoran has averaged around 20 at least since she was a sophomore, plus what i was tyring to say is...the reason mariah smith gets the open looks is because defenses have to compensate and key on killoran because of how good she and they concentrate on her. sometimes even with a double team. this frees up mariah, yes she is a good player i'm not taking away from that, i'm just saying that killoran and her ability allows smith to get open for her shots

I agree that Killoran is not a great shot from the outside or the freethrow line. Outside shooting is definitely her weak point. But what she does have is the ability to jump and catch a pass that you were trying to throw over her head, sneak behind you and steal the ball you thought you had control of, and drive to the basket, twisting and turning and drawing a foul almost every time. Granted, a lot of these drives are wild and no way are going in, but she's drawing a foul and she's making the opponent nervous. You can't have any lazy passes if she's around. You can't just let the ball go out-of-bounds if she's behind you, because she'll snatch it up and be gone before you know it. You always have to know where she is, because if you don't, she'll make you pay for it. Is she the best basketball player in the state - no. But she is an amazing athlete, pure and simple, and most teams would be thrilled to have her on their team.

It was hardly a miracle shot. It was a fast break lay-up by Abby Sprunk. The Squirrels haven't been in the district championship game for a long time, they're going to want the win. Good luck Squirrels! It should be a good one!

She is a glorified ball hog just like Mandi Bindas of Kindred.

Killoran, in terms of ability (speed, jumping and strength) is the better athlete. In terms of basketball skills and fundamentals (footwork, boxing out, jumpshooting, consistent free throw form, use of pivots, defensive shuffle and over-all decision making on the floor) Smith is the better basketball player. Regardless, for a team to be successful they need a good mix of athleticism and basketball skill. This is what you get with Killoran and Smith. One without the other will not be very successful.
