Not sure, but I think so...Aren't the regional refs voted on by coaches?

Getting back to call that was missed in the Northstar vs Rolette game the problem I had with the call was it was made from wrong official one that was not in position to make the call. I have seen this a lot this year where certain officials are making calls over the official who has best view of play and had not made the call. I think another thing that should be done on the officiating at least for Regional tournaments is that officials for each region should be from distant region where these officials haven't seen teams and players so they have fresh perspective of teams and players. Would also truly keep politics out of it for the referees they could just officiate games and when they are done they can go home.

I have zero ties to this region other than knowing parents from a few of the towns playing so I do follow the outcomes.

Regarding the last second shot: That call is not the responsibility in any circumstance of the lead official or as you refer to the one under the basket. They do not have a view of the clock or shot clock to make that determination. Coaches know this and if that official had made the signal to count the basket you can bet that the association in V.C. would be getting a phone call and likely a tape of the game from the coach on the losing end of the shot. From reading the previous posts it appears it was not the lead official, or as you refer the one under the basket, that made the call so it was done correctly.

Regarding regional assignments: Assigned by NDHSAA.

Regarding having officials from other regions come in versus officials from that region: I agree that having officials from outside the area would be nice but imagine the added costs to this. Officials from the Devils Lake (region 4) having to travel 3 straight days to officiate games in Minot (region 6) or officials in region 6 having to travel 3 straight nights to Mandan (region 5). Would possibly have to add hotel rooms for the officials versus paying mileage but even more of a problem would be the availability as BB officials have other jobs as well and having to be gone that much more or leaving work that much earlier to travel that distance for the first round games or even the evening for the 2nd and 3rd nights would cause issues.

It's a thankless job and I've seen officials make calls that could be considered questionable but are you as close to the action as they are, do you have the same angle as they do, or do you know the rules like they do? In most cases the answer is no to all of those.

Not mentioned earlier but two other points to address: OVER THE BACK - non existent, can't be called, and is not a foul in any way or labeled as such in any rule book. I listened to announcers State B boys and even the former coach doing the announcing at the tourney make numerous references each day regarding over the back calls. It's not a foul, violation, or call in any circumstance. If contact is made that allows the person behind the other one to gain an advantage than yes it is a foul but it is not over the back. The second one is offensive fouls. A defender can be moving and still draw an offensive foul, period - end of story. It does make a difference in how the defender is positioned but yes they can be moving an draw an offensive foul.

On the NDHSAA website there are numerous bulletins that can be printed by anyone that address some of the points of emphasis for the 13-14' season. http://www.ndhsaa.com/athletics/basketball-boys

Coaches cast votes for Regional refs, but that doesn't mean they get the officials who they vote for. Correct me if I'm wrong but the selection goes (Class A Boys, Class B Boys, Class A Girls, Class B Girls) so the girls B get the (if you assume each regional gets 6 per tournament) 73rd-121st highest vote receiving officials. I wish they would do away with the 1 regional per ref rule. That way the best refs could do the games they should, if they WANT to do more.

Coaches do not vote for Region officials. They do vote for District officials. Officials are also not ranked 1st - 999th for the entire State.

Coaches do not vote for DISTRICT officials, they vote for REGION officials. I never once said they are "ranked" I said they go off of the voting for the regional officials.

I'm pretty sure he's right, Districts pick officials and for Regional officials you send in votes to NDHSAA and they assign officials based on the number of votes.

Holy misinformation...To get this thread back on track...How many ranked teams from the final poll are we going to see in the field of 8?

I'll start off by saying 6.

Minot Ryan, Central Cass, North Star, Beach, Shiloh and Thompson

In the "open" regions, I'll go South Border and Watford.

I was really mad I didn't go with my first intention.... which was 10 points
and of course that's why they play the game
The Freije Girls not making it to State last year has to be weighing heavy on the mind of the one left playing
she could be dangerous if she makes it back on the court for the tourney

good luck to all teams... :)

Wow did LE step up. Ronningen played a great floor game, shot the ball well. They controlled that one start to finish.
