Hillsboro/CV receives first round bye in Game #1 as the No. 1 seed in the tournament.

Game 2- MPCG vs. Hatton-Northwood

Patriots lead the Thunder 27-24 at the half. Thunder are without head coach Shane Azure for this game and are being coached by assistant Jackie Lenz and former coach Dennis Carpenter.

May-Port CG DEFEATS Hatton-Northwood 68-40

The Patriots shot the lights out in the second half (6-of-11 3PA, 16-of-30 FGA) en route to a blowout victory. The Thunder were outscored 19-6 in the 3rd and 22-10 in the 4th after a close first half. 24 H-N turnovers versus just SIX for MPCG was the difference in this game.

MPCG advances to play against Hillsboro-Central Valley tomorrow at approximately 6:00 p.m. while H-N awaits the results of later games to see who they play in a loser out, region qualifier game on Monday.

Game 3 - Thompson vs. Dakota Prairie

Thompson is leading 47-10 at halftime. Pretty much been a lay-up drill so far.

Second half was played mostly by Thompson's second unit. Very dominant effort. Thompson will play the final game of the day tomorrow against the winner of Larimore vs. Griggs Co. Central. Dakota Prairie playes @ 4:30 tomorrow against the loser of Larimore vs. GCC.

Game 4 - Larimore vs. Griggs County Central

GCC leads Larimore at the half 28-26. Good game so far, back and forth and very competitive.

Larimore DEFEATS GCC 53-49.

Larimore won the game 53-49 in the only close game of the day. Very competitive and back and forth. Larimore looked like they were going to be upset before a late fourth quarter run gave them the win.

LHS plays Thompson at 7:30 in a region qualifer.

Game 6 - MPCG vs. H/CV

H/CV DEFEATS MPCG 57-44

The Burros extended their lead all the way to 22 with five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter as they advanced to the District 3 championship game winning 57-44 over the Patriots. MPCG didn't quit late in the game with a deficit that big, which is encouraging for them going forward. H/CV awaits the winner of Thompson and Larimore while MPCG plays Griggs County Central on Monday in a region qualifier.

Top Performers: H/CV - K. Henningsgard (20 pts, 3 stl) T. Henningsgard (8 pts, 9 ast) R. Murphy (13 pts, 7 reb)

Game 7 - Larimore vs. Thompson

Thompson DEFEATS Larimore 63-33

The Tommies dominated the game from the second quarter on after a slow start by their standards (13-7 after the first quarter). With the score 15-10 in the second the Tommies outscored LHS 48-23 from then on to advance to the District 3 championship for their third meeting with the Hillsboro/Central Valley Burros. Karleigh Weber and Shannon Galegher both eclipsed the 1,000 point mark in the game tonight. Weber scored hers on a drive and lay-up in the second quarter. Galegher got hers on an elbow jump shot in the third quarter.

The stage is set for the game everyone was expecting coming into this tournament with THS and H/CV locking up for the District 3 championship. Wouldn't be surprised if the same match-up presents itself for the Region 2 championship as well. Two teams ranked in the top 10 of the state poll should make for a good basketball game. The Tommies and Burros have split their first two meetings of the season.

Top Performers - THS: K. Weber (17 pts, 5 reb, 3 ast) S. Galegher (12 pts, 6 reb) M. Demoe (10 pts, 3 ast)
LHS (R. Williams 10 pts, 6 reb)

Game 8 – Hatton-Northwood vs. Larimore
Hatton-Northwood DEFEEATS Larimore 45-41.

H-N advances to the Region 2 tournament. Larimore is ELIMINATED.

The two teams went back and forth all game long until the final two minutes the Thunder came up with a few plays and the Polar Bears couldn’t answer. The Thunder making free throws down the stretch sealed the win and upset of the Polar Bears. I was told the last time these two played prior to today’s game the Polar Bears won by a large margin (30+) so this has to come as a shock to Polar Bear fans.

Hatton-Northwood will go to the Regional as the #4 seed.

Top Performers: HN – A. Hillebrand (17 pts, 8 reb), S. Bilden (13 pts, 8 reb) LHS – R. Bernardy (14 pts, 9 reb) B. Georgeson (10 pts, 6 reb)

Game 9 – May-Port CG vs. Griggs County Central

May-Port CG DEFEATS Griggs County Central 52-40

MPCG advances to the region 2 tournament. GCC is ELIMINATED.

The Patriots led basically the entire game (GCC led by one early in the first quarter) and advanced to the Region 2 tournament for the second time in as many years. MPCG got a very nice game out of freshman Jayden Warner. Warner came off the bench to score 14 points including 6-6 from the free throw line. The

Patriots will go to the Regional as the #3 seed.

Top Performers: MPCG – J. Warner (14 pts, 6-6 FTS), M. Walden (14 pts, 10 reb) K. Ust (12 pts, 3 reb)
GCC – S. Andel (15 pts), A. Savre (11 pts, 4 stl)

District 3 Championship Game – Hillsboro/Central Valley vs. Thompson

Thompson DEFEATS Hillsboro/Central Valley 66-62

In the game we all wanted to see, it did anything but let the fans down. Thompson came out firing in the first half and took an 11 point lead into halftime. Karliegh Weber led the charge with 15 of her 22 points coming in the first 16 minutes. H-CV outscored the Tommies 25-15 in the third quarter to get back into the game for the fourth quarter. H-CV took a lead on an “and 1” play that also fouled out Shannon Galegher with just under 3 minutes left in the game. The Tommies stayed composed and got two baskets from Averi Olson and Bethany Ivesdal to tie the game at 61 all. McKenna Demoe came up with a basket next for Thompson to retake the lead 63-61. Kadie Doeden split a pair of free throws on the next possession to bring the Burros within one point. Averi Olson got herself open underneath the basket on the next possession and Shaice Marx found her for a lay-up to give the Tommies a three point lead. Taylor Henningsards ensuing three point shot was blocked and she was forced to foul to put Thompson at the free throw line again. Averi Olson split the following free throws and gave the Tommies a 66-62 advantage. H/CV’s final attempt was no good and the Tommies won the district 3 championship.

Top Performers:
H-CV – T. Henningsgard (25 pts, 10 ast, 5 reb) K. Henningsgard (15 pts, 3 reb, 3 ast)
THS – K. Weber (22 pts, 7 reb, 3 ast) S. Galegher (15 pts, 8 reb) B. Ivesdal (12 pts, 5 ast, 5 reb)

Region 2 Match Ups:

No. 1 Thompson vs. No. 4 North Border
No. 2 Hillsboro/CV vs. No. 3 Midway-Minto
No. 3 MPCG vs. No. 2 Drayton V/E
No. 4 Hatton/Northwood vs. No. 1 Grafton

I like that they kept all district to 10 players, unlike some other districts that had like 15 players.

I believe they just changed it this year at their meeting. I like it too, it means more to be selected when you only have 10.
