sparky wrote:congrats to milnor on the huge upset...it would be fun to see them win a few more and to also have a milnor north sargent matchup in the championship although i dont beleive that will happen. I am thinking a hankinson 3 peat is on its way, especially with fshp going down tonight, with all 3 championships coming with a win over central cass. Hankinson just seems like the team that central cass can just not beat. Good luck to all the remaining teams and i hope this tournament is one to go down in the history books.

Reffing could play a big part in how Hankinson does. Hankinson is a very physical team and the refs in yesterday's game let them just go - it was ugly. If they have refs that call the game a little more closely, it could hurt them and take them out of their game.

FSHP is UPSET by Milnor by a score of 47 - 42!!

Wow....that's a shock

Coach K for coach of the year! Didn't they only win a couple games last year?

The sports announcer on TV said that Milnor was winless last year... wow.

What is their record this year? I don't think its anything great, but they must be peaking at the right time. What seed were they for the district tourney?

I'm not sure of their record, but they were the # 4 seed going into the District 1 tourney, and the #4 seed from that district going into the Region 1 tourney.

Im pretty sure its 9-14

That is a surprise, but that late game can always be weird. I guess I will stick with my original pick of Hankinson. They are putting up a lot points (even in their district loss to NS), and they can play tough defense. Plus the tournament is in Wahpeton...the commute can get surprisingly tiring for Central Cass.

ya your right an hour of doing vigerous activities on the bus can really wear a person

Milnor's record now stands at 15-8. They were the 4 seed going into the D1 tourney and lost to F-C-T to finish fourth in the tourney. Quite the accomplishment considering they were 0-20 in 08-09 and only won a couple of games in 07-08.

I don't think a bus ride from Casselton to Whapeton is that big of a tiring commute. Its longer to go than Hankinson has to go but its not like its forever and ever away.

So what happened in the FSHP and Milnor game, did Milnor just out play them or did FSHP come out slow?

Don't book your rooms quite yet. CC is playing well, very disclipined and playing good D, but don't forget Hankinson has the experience in these games. The seniors on HHS have been through alot on & off the court and they are tough to rattle. CC has the revenge factor. It should be a great game. Much closer than the last 2 championship games. I believe the Pirates won those by an average of around 20?? lol Pretty sure that won't happen again. Good luck to both teams, I know either team will represent Region 1 well at state.

Milnor! They beat both # 1 seeds (FSHP & North Sargent) but still ended up with 3rd place. Not bad though for being winless last year.

Good luck to Central Cass at representing Region 1 in the state tournament. It's great that the entire state will get a chance to see Taylor Kraft.

well I think that its a bummer that Milnor's coach did not get the district and region COY. To turn around a program that went 0-20 last season and bring them home some hardware at the Regional tourney!! He is MY Coach of the Year...incredible season for the Bison of Milnor out of District 1

Girls basketball: Squirrels state bound
Central Cass is headed back to state for the first time in more than three decades.
By: Heath Hotzler, INFORUM

WAHPETON, N.D. – Central Cass is headed back to state for the first time in more than three decades.

The Squirrels avenged region title game losses to Hankinson in each of the last two seasons and exercised 36 years worth of demons with a 51-42 victory against the Pirates on Thursday in the Region 1 girls basketball championship at Ed Werre Arena.

“Unbelievable,” Squirrels coach Barb Kraft said. “When we were getting ready for this game, these young ladies did whatever we asked. They just had a gut check tonight and they played their hearts out. I’m really proud.”

Central Cass used a 10-2 run to take control of the game in the third quarter. The Squirrels held a 43-35 lead heading into the fourth.

Calm and collected Central Cass turned away everything Hankinson had in the final minutes, sealing the game at the free-throw line.

The Squirrels shot 42 percent from the floor.

“We’re so excited,” Madison Gegelman said. “It’s like no words can even describe it.”

The game couldn’t have started any better for the Squirrels as they set the tone on both ends of the court.

Central Cass, which was defeated by the Pirates by 18 points during the regular season, had little trouble breaking Hankinson’s usually stifling full-court press early and often.

While the Squirrels flourished, the Pirates fizzled on both ends of the court.

Hankinson’s first field goal came at 2:48 of the first quarter.

Central Cass held a 17-9 advantage heading into the second.

That’s when the Pirates finally cut loose.

A 14-0 run late in the first and early in the second helped Hankinson take a 19-17 lead with 5:28 remaining in the first half. Senior Casey Geffre had 14 in the first half to spark the Pirates comeback.

Central Cass fended off the rally just in time to take a 29-24 lead into halftime.

Mike Sorlie of North Sargent was named Region 1 coach of the year. Hankinson’s Casey Geffre was selected region senior athlete of the year.

“You can’t even describe it,” said Central Cass junior Taylor Kraft, who finished with 14 points. “All the hard work paid off.”
