if you remember Jaden Voth from Glen Ullin a few years ago, he wanted to transfer to Trinity for his senior year which would have given Trinity hands down the best team in the state, but the school board said no to it because they knew he wasn't transferring for the faith-based education and didn't want to get accused of recruiting even though Voth wanted to come by himself

When have regionals been held in Hazen or Beulah? If i remember correctly aren't they on a rotation for the district tourney but Trinity always gets the regional?

School boards don't deal with individual students transferring in or out. That is pure rumor mill speculation. The region's athletic directors choose the site of the regional tournament.

Umm, yeah they do. The school board of each school decides to accept or decline open enrollment applications and figures out the tuition agreements and transportation for those cases.

True. It is completely up to the school board. If you read the minutes of any school board meeting, you will see that the issue is brought to the school board. At many private schools, an application and interview w/ the family and student is generally involved especially if they haven't been involved with the school previously. Most of the families that choose a faith-based school are not involved in athletics.

He referred to a private school's board, which wouldn't deal with open enrollment. I find it highly unlikely that that scenario above was handled at a school board level. Could be wrong...

The application/interview process would happen with an administrator or school guidance counselor and would not involve the board, right?

Allow me to start over and re phrase. I think it's possible that the decision referenced above was made at a much lower level, but I could be wrong.

Diustricts rotate and on years where district 14 is not played at Trinity, District 13 often plays their tournament their. Regionals are usually at Trinity but Beulah and Hazen host them on occasion. Those sites are selected by the schools in the region. It comes down to logistics. Dickinson is in the middle geographically in the region AND have the largest facility. Convenience and DOLLARS play a large roll in this.

I agree with you that it could have been at a lower level but given that this was a pretty high profile event that could have brought the school into big controversy and an launched an investigation by the NDHSAA I can reasonably see the board being brought in on this issue

Member Schools Directory on NDHSAA website says this for Oakes
"Grades 7-12, 133 students"; maybe a slight over-adjustment but they aren't a large school.

The NDHSAA membership directory has no standard for entering enrollment numbers. Some go 7-12, some 9-12, some 10-12.

I think it's deliberately confusing, but we'll save that for another time.

In any event, since 9-12 enrollment is key, I'm guessing if a school enters 7-12, you take the number, divide by 6, and multiply by 4 to get a rough estimate of 9-12 enrollment.

Could be wrong, just a shot in the dark.

That was my guess.

Maybe it isn't too hard to find, but I can't find that on the NDHSAA website. I've been saying it for years, but that website is hard to navigate. I go to the MSHSL it will take me less than 1 minute to find any school's enrollment.

Here's an option: http://www.ndhsaa.com/files/MemberSchoolDirectory.pdf

Then I just ctrl+F to search for the school I want to check.

That is a great link with a lot of good information. NDHSAA should have drop down menu of all the schools, when you click the school you're looking for all their information comes up, with links too all their activities.

Here is the enrollment by grade from the DPI. Much more accurate. I will try to put it in an excel file and add up the high school enrollments later today.

Financially it's hard to justify keeping a high school with fewer then 80 students open. The cost per pupil soars and at some point the best interest of the tax payer will have to be taken into account. That's one reason why the state took on a larger role in funding education a few years ago. It will easier for someone from the outside to come in and close a school rather then let it become an emotional home town decision.

I bet that number is about 50% of the high schools in ND. Pretty difficult to say it's hard to justify when half are making it work.

I don't really know if they are, though. At some point, you also have to consider whether or not the school is "hurting" the student as well. When the cost of education is soaring, but the quality and opportunities available are as poor as they are in the small schools across the state, you have a problem. It's not really working.
