How often has this happened? 3 1,000 point Scorers 1 game

Postby EHS1998 » Fri Feb 05, 2021 4:44 pm

Tonight is the Annual Oakes vs Ellendale "Cowbell" Game. This is a rivalry dating back decades and more often than not is highly competitive, regardless of how either team does the remainder of the year. However, this year boasts a game that will include 3 1,000 point scorers in Oakes Senior's Steele Hansen and Garret Meehl and Ellendale Junior Scott Wagner. Can anyone recall a game that had 3 or more players who had already scored 1,000 points in their careers? Seems pretty remarkable.

Earlier this year we had two athletes from opposing teams get their milestones in the same game...on back-to-back possessions; thought that might have been a first (no one has said it wasn't yet either).

I feel like your description has happened before...I know OG had two athletes (Kretchman - 1308 & Adams - 1414) in 2015 and they faced Heidlebaugh and Rugby in the State Semifinals (1632 was his final point total).

Kindred girls play Enderlin coming up on Monday and that will display Enderlin's Tingley (1000+) and Kindred's Terryn Johnson (1000+) and Abby Duchscherer (2000+) in that game.

It is not very uncommon at all. Two guys getting their 1,000 in the same game is pretty rare. I think the game tonight will be a very good one, two great teams.
It is a little harder to motivate kids I guess because they’ve been pampered so much. We’re in the trophy generation, give ‘em a trophy for 23rd place, make ‘em feel good. Make mom and dad feel good.” Tom Izzo, Michigan State Basketball

Awesome info. Glad I asked. Didn't mean to indicate it never has happened, just that it was rare. So far, in boys basketball, we have 1 example from 6 years ago, which would indicate it is kind of rare.

It will happen twice this year again with Oakes when they play Linton and Kindred. Maybe even Renz is close and there might be 4, not sure where he is points wise.

That’s all I knew off top of my head and schools I knew; I’d venture to guess it happened in R4 with North Star a few times...maybe with Milnor at some point too when they had Bussman & Mund.

Girls
Grafton v. Kindred should had four when they played earlier this season.
I started to make a list of three, but it was getting long.

Ellendale 58 Oakes 53 Entertaining game. Ellendale held a 12 point lead going into the 4th quarter, Oakes battled back. Wagner and Thorpe too much in the end. Gutty defensive effort by Durheim, Blondo, Reis, Geller and Henningsen. Helped keep Meehl, Hansen and Biesterfield mostly contained. Wagner with an all around great game, passing, defending in the block, rebounding and scoring when he needed to. Kid is special. Thorpe is an absolute sniper and plays well beyond his years. 9 in a row for the Cards in the Cowbell series. Hard to fathom given how good some of the Oakes teams have been in that span. Credit to Coach Vance. Both teams still have goals ahead of them this year. D5/R3 are very deep this year.

Linton teammates and classmates Brian Sauter and Kenny Ohlhauser both reached the 1,000 point Mark in the same game against Kulm in the 1980 Region V semi-finals.

Linton-HMB teammates Jonathan Purintun and Ryan Schneider reached the 1,000 point Mark within a couple of games of each other in 2015.

The question was asked if Renz of Linton-HMB is at or near 1,000 points? He is not.

2017 State Championship game had at least three 1,000 point scorers- Kyle Henningsgard and Austin Reed from HCV and Tronis McKay from FW-Minnewaukan.

Steve Redfox from FW-M also played in that game and was a regular in the lineup for five years. I'm not sure if he eclipsed 1,000 points as well but he had to have been close.

Are we talking about 1000+ scorers at the time the game is played? If so, this one isn't true as I know OG's two went over the 1000 point milestone early in their 2015 seasons

Was just adding this in because I assume its rare to have 6/10 starters for the game score over 1,000 in their careers.

Nothing wrong with it...I’m just trying to figure out what “rules” there are for this topic/feat. Have to have the milestone already or could have gotten it in the future? The original post included 3 that have already gone over the milestone which has always been my thought process when looking at this

Run - My thinking when I posted it was 1,000 point scorers at the time the game was played. It clearly happens more than I thought.

One instance I can think of is 2014 district one Tournament. Milnor faced off with FCT in the Semi-Finals. Briton Bussman, D'Angelo Burns, and Wyatt Mund would have already eclipsed 1000 career points.
Side note: game lived up to the potential as I believe box scores were Bussman-44 Burns-44 Mund-26" Fun game to watch.
