As we have begun the All State debate, Mr. Basketball naturally follows.

What do you guys think?

I imagine we see the following as candidates.

Briton Bussman - Milnor
Tanner Holte - Des Lacs Burlington
Tanner Kretchman - Fargo Davies
Tyler Rudolph - Bismarck Century
Ben Weisbeck - Saint Mary's Central

Balla45 - What kind of years/careers have the Class A guys had? I honestly have no idea about them, other than Kretchman.

Kretchman played varsity as a junior high athlete and freshman at Kindred, then transferred and sat out his sophomore season, and was then First Team All State as a junior and is leading Class A in scoring this year for #5 ranked Fargo Davies. He has had a 46 point game this year, which is a North Dakota high. He is signed at MSUM of the NSIC.

Rudolph is a 3 year starter at Bismarck Century. He was a Second Team All State pick as a junior. This season he is averaging 16.8 points and 8.6 boards per game. Has had 2 performances this year where he was personally outscoring the other team at halftime, and as such doesn't play a ton of minutes as the majority of his team's games are blowouts. Bismarck Century is undefeated at this point. He is signed at MSU of the NSIC.

Ben Weisbeck is a 4 year starter at Saint Mary's Central. He was 1 of 2 All State sophomores in the 2011-2012 season, the other being Tanner Holte. He was a Second Team All State pick as a sophomore and a First Team All State pick as a junior. He's averaging 21.5 points and 7.3 rebounds for #3 ranked Saint Mary's Central. He is signed at Augustana of the NSIC.

I would put Strom up before Holte, and maybe even before Bussman.

I agree with his top five at this point. Rudolph has really impressed me with his overall play, has his team playing great and yet to loose I believe. His stats aren't as great due to the fact he sits a lot because they blow a lot of teams out. I think Kretchman will probably get it though. Voters seem to like the highest point average..

I somewhat see your point, but a very strong argument could be made that Strom should not be a First Team All State player in Class A right now. Because of that, I think it is a struggle to put him up for Mr. Basketball.

Didn't he play for Central Cass as well?

I'm going with Weisbeck, seems to be having the better year overall.

I don't think he made the Varsity at CC as a 7th grader though...would have to check on that. He played varsity as an 8th & 9th grader at Kindred...transferred to Davies for sophomore year (played JV and dominated via transfer rules).

Yeah he didn't play varsity as a 7th grader. The story on here was that he wanted to play varsity as an 8th grader and CC said they weren't going to let him or didn't need him so he went to Kindred instead.

As I heard it, the CC coaches were already faced with cutting 6 prospective high school players for the JV, and it didn't seem right to keep an 8th grader.

Just think how good Kindred would be this year if Tanner & Carter didn't leave...would venture to guess they would have been the State Favorites this year :)

Actually, Central Cass would have been pretty tough too if they hadn't left Casselton before moving to Kindred (and then to Fargo)!

You could put those two together on the worst class B team in the state and they would make them a very tough team.

Is it even possible for Holte to get it, when Bussman was the Class B SAOY?

Doubtful...but I think this is a Class A year. Bussman's numbers are good...but Kretchman, Rudolph & Weisbeck have been unreal this year.

In 2007, Justin Belohlavek was Class A Senior Athlete of the Year and Brian Qvale won Mr. Basketball.
In 2009, Morgan Dale was WDA Senior Athlete of the Year, Caitlin Haring was EDC Senior Athlete of the Year, Aleshia Collins won Miss Basketball, Kelsi Sigl was Gatorade Player of the Year, and Sarah Feeney was Class A State Tournament MVP.

I see..I don't see how they could vote someone else Mr. Basketball when they voted someone else the A or B SAOY. It must be different voters for the two awards. Or is there more voters for Mr. Basketball?

Senior Athlete of the Year - Coach Vote.
Mr. Basketball - Media Vote.

Congrats to Tanner Kretchman. I don't think there will be too many complaints about this one. From watching the state tournaments A and B he was definitely the best player in the state this year. Anybody know which schools recruited him. I hope UND/NDSU did because I think he could help out any school in the area.
