It also helps that they had been to state two out of the last three seasons, and went undefeated through the region this year. People like cheering for the underdog, especially when the favorite is Oak Grove. It was the same case for Central Cass last year when they played Maple Valley in the semis. Central Cass had mostly dominated all year, and so everyone other than CC's fans wanted the underdog Maple Valley to win.

Crazy surprising result with Milnor winning. Impressive run they've got going on. Hopefully they can end Region 1's thursday slump at state! (Region 1 has only had a team playing in the semifinals two times since Oak Grove's championship in 2000, 2-10 in the first round in that span.)

I wouldn't say crazy surprising result. Anyone can see that Milnor's been playing great basketball as of late. Oak Grove has been playing good basketball. Great beats good 9/10 times. Congrats to the Grovers on an amazing season. Congrats to the Regional Champs Milnor. No doubt they will make noise in the tournament.

Not much fan support outside of Oak Grove for the Grovers...Being the Private School in the Region doesn't help.

Side Note: Congrats to the Milnor Bison...they EARNED the win tonight. Make Region 1 proud Milnor!

I agree Run, let's hope Milnor can represent the region well! Good Luck to the Milnor Bison!

I think it was a combination of being the Private School, and also Milnor being a District 1 team in the championship. D2 has taken care of business in regionals the past few years and having a D1 team in the championship brought a bigger crowd from the smaller schools. Plus everyone likes the underdog! Congrats to both teams on great years!

It's definitely a combination of all of the above. Plus these schools coop in other sports. Milnor plays football with North Sargent and coop track with Lidgerwood and Wyndmere. They're teammates with these kids in other sports so they're going to support them in the big games! Best of luck to the Bison at state and congrats on another good season Oak Grove.

it is human nature to cheer for the underdog? In last years girls region everyone was cheering for Maple Valley when they nearly beat Kindred and 2 nights later everyone was cheering for Kindred because C Cass had won the region the last 2 years. Milnor wasn't IMO an underdog the other night but they were the team people want to cheer for. The crowd would have been the same if Central Cass was playing them instead of Oak Grove because they went to state the year before.

That could be true, in recent years Oak Grove and CC both have gone to state. But if a casual follower of Region 1 basketball hears Oak Grove vs. Milnor I think the majority of the time they think Milnor would be the underdog. Also look at the records. I personally didn't think they were an underdog because they had been playing good basketball lately. It also helped that the majority of Maple Valley's crowd stayed and cheered on the Bison. Grovers beat them by 3 the night before.
