Oh my gosh! They will??? LOL. Zacher is the most gifted player in the state...including those from North Star. They will have to be upset to not win it next year....their toughest competition will be in their own region.

I was responding to the original poster about teams who have been playing well over the summer. I've watched 4 kids who will play varsity for Beulah play in a lot of games on the AAU circuit this summer, and I've been impressed. Not sure if I think Zacher is the most gifted player in the state, but he is incredibly athletic playing in a fairly unathletic state which is a major benefit. Hagler, Grande, and Weston are legit and will be there in the end next year as well. I think Trinity will be tough, as Volk is again a very good athlete, and they have some size. I am not sure if there are going to be many, or any, other major contenders for a state championship next season.

I still think AJ Jacobson is the best player in high school basketball, however, you may have only been including Class B players, and at that point it really could go either way, but it is tough to go against Hagler if we are strictly discussing ability to impact a high school game, however, I will give you Zacher if we are talking about potential college success.

I had an opportunity a few weeks back to watch the ECI 17 team take on the Dakota Pride team in the ECI tournament in Mayville. Hagler was pretty much shut down. I believe Illies was on him most of the time. Zacher is a hustler. Couldn't tell you who I thought was the best on the court, but can say there were quite a few good players on both teams.

I suppose I was talking just Class B. Trinity will be really tough, but I don't think they can hold Beulah under 60, and they won't be able to score more than that with just Volk as a consistent double digit scorer....add to that for some reason, every big game I've seen Volk play in, he's in foul trouble. I would agree with most everything you said...and I actually think Class B will be down a bit next year overall compared to last year.

Beulah Graduates beat Wilton 96-74, but Christian Thompson of Wilton dropped around 55 of those 74pts. I know that there wasn't a lot of defense, but 55pts is a good night.

A team combined of 7th graders from 4-Winds, Devils Lake and North Star won the MYA? tournament in Minneapolis this past weekend. It was a national qualifier. They now play in Kansas City sometime in August.

Oak Grove went 5-1 down at the Northern State Team Camp
(other teams that participated at the camp from ND were: Ellendale, Edgeley-Kulm, Shiloh Christian)

The two ND teams that I know about:

OG defeated Ellendale 93-46, E-K by 40+, and then 3 SD teams: Mobridge-Pollock, Redfield & Leola-Frederick. Their only loss came to the hands of Warner (SD) in Sudden Death Double OT.

Ellendale defeated E-K and lost to Warner, Shiloh Christian and Oak Grove handily; and lost close games to Leola-Frederick and Redfield.

Oakes and Oakes JV
Edgeley Kulm
Lamoure
Milnor
Wyndmere Lidgerwood
Sargent Central
South Border
Ellendale

North Sargent usually does but I am not sure they were there this year.

I think, overall, teams were down a bit from years past. However, there were some really good players and thus some interesting battles in this league with the likes of Jeff Illies, Michael Jacobson, Adam Jacobson, Hunter Pinke, Logan Hanson, Wyatt Mund, Briton Bussman, Brady Thielges, Bryce Meehl, Adam Weber and Adam White and some others I am no doubt missing.

From what I watched most teams were down, with the exception of milnor. It looks like the story from these teams will be good individual player and not as good teams.

What was Sargent Central & South Border like?

South Border is VERY talented.

They will probably boast the best trio of players on one team in Region 3 next year.

6'5 swing player, Michael Jacobson will be the Region 3 player of the year and his brother Adam just keeps getting better and better, very athletic and can jump out of the gym. Guarding these two is challenging enough, but add 6'5 freshman phenom post player, Hunter Pinke, to the mix and they will be very hard to match up with and beat.

In addition to the big three, there are other very good role players as well.

South Border gets a new coach this year so there may be some pain as they transition, but if they can come together, they will be the odds on favorite to end Lintons stranglehold on the Region 3 crown.

Ironically, SB will also be a state title contender in 9 man football.

I know that Coach Bittner is not going to be back but I do not have confirmation on his replacement. I have heard the last name is Lukens (sp?) but that is speculation at best, nothing solid.
