baller050 wrote:first off Run, you are 100 percent right, it matters how you play at the end of the year! I was at the game last night so I'll share my insight. SB looked like a trainwreck last night. However, so did Linton last year the first 5 games of the year. When Jacobson gets back this will be a whole new team offensivly. The big thing I thought was so bad for SB was their deffense. Linton scored 69 points, had many uncontested shots, WIDE OPEN looks, and in my opinion let up offensivly the whole fourth quarter. Mike will help SB a lot offensivly but I dont know how much he will help them deffensivly. Pinkie played ok and is a very good player for a freshman, also adam jacobson played ok. However, they are missing a leader big time and I dont know if Mike is that leader. He is a very talented player and their best player by far but best player is a lot different than leader. When Mike returns I see SB improving a lot and jumping up to one of the top teams in the region. However, deffense and leadership may hold them back from punching their tickets to state, also Lamoure looked darn good when I watched them play. It will be interesting to see how this region turns out late february.

Extremely well said. I personally think that Mike can be that leader and will help them gel better on both ends. I think we need to see how the team does over the course of the season and especially after Mike is back at 100% before we start indicting the new coach. This will be my last comment on the matter as I fear I hav perpetuated the discussion about the coaches, which was not my intent.

I have watched district 6 basketball for the last 7 years. fYou can't learn basketball when you are Juniors and Senoirs. I think their new coach is trying to teach some now. Basketball is a game you practice year
round.

Sounds to me like South Border has a lot more problems then fundamentals. Enough of this over hyped team. My question is about the other region 3 teams. At this very early stage of the season, is there a clear cut favorite, or is this region open for anyone? I haven't seen any region 3 action yet this season, but are there any sleepers out there?

LaMoure-LM has to be the favorite after the first three weeks of the season...but S/Z isn't far behind (IMO).

Lamoure-LM still the favorite with how they are playing? Or is S/Z slipped ahead?

As of now my top 4 would be like this:
1: LLM
2: South Border
3: S/Z
4: Linton-HMB
I know Linton has a pretty big win over South Border earlier, and i also know that Strausburg is undefeated, but i think M. Jacobson makes a HUGE difference and i think the mustangs have played pretty well with their best player back. Does anyone know if S/Z has played South Border yet?
I also think we will know a little bit more about LLM as they host #5 Carrington tomorrow night.

I would agree with this, except i would change S/Z and LLM for now at least still early in the season.

1. LaMoure-LM
2. Strasburg/Zeeland
3. South Border
4. Linton-HMB

those are the top 4 teams right now (South Border is coming around).

S/Z hosts South Border on January 15th. That will be a telling sign of where teams are at mid-season.

South Border will have a good stretch here to show everyone: at Kidder County (1/10), Grant County at the Shiloh Jamboree at the Bismarck Civic Center (1/12), at Strasburg/Zeeland (1/15).

When does South Border play LLM? That will be a good one.

I dont think LLM typically plays SZ so we may not get to see this match up until the Region 3 Championship.

LLM and SZ appear to be 1 and 2 (whatever order you prefer) at this point and seem to currently be a notch above the rest. South Border with MJ looks pretty good and is probably at the top of the 2nd tier. However, Linton continues to improve and I think we all have learned to never count them out.

I would have put EKM in that mix as well until last nights loss to Kidder County, which was a bit of a surprise for me. However, they, Kidder and BCN all appear to have the potential to knock off one of the previously referenced teams on a good night.

Last June at the summer league in Oaks. South Border and Lamoure played each other. IT was South Borders second game of the day. They only had 5 players both Jacobsons, Pinke, and 2 players I think didn't even start on their B team. Lamoure pretty much had their whole team there. SB boys were tired but they one big. Highlite Adam J stole the ball from B. Theilges and a big time dunk on the other end. You don't hear much about Michael Jacobson scoring his thousand point at the 2nd game of that tourney in N Cass. I talked to Mike's Dad the other day. He said his son is at about 80%. He was smiling big time.

Jacobson is legit, there is no denying that. I am so happy he is back, his 80% is better than a lot of guys 100%. Hope he is close to that 100% by the end of the year. What is the word on college for Mike? He is a stud in 3 sports so his choices will be aplenty, I'm sure.

Just a note that Summer League is not always the best predictor of performance/results in the regular/post season.

That said, I see a very competitive Region 3 tourney this year.

The South Border - S-Z rematch will be played in Zeeland this Tuesday. It is a double header with Girls and Boys. Better get there early if you want a seat in that little gym.

SB jumped out to an early lead. SZ then took command and seemed to be in control for the majority of the game. SZ lead 42 to 27 early in the 4th. South Border did not have a great shooting night but did climb back in it in the second half, including a 9 to 0 run to close the lead to 6.

Foul trouble plagued SB early and was a factor.

SZ is a very solid, balanced team who is going to make you work for everything you get. I think SB is probably more talented but SZ is deeper.

Freshman Brody Niewsma from SZ is a very nice player.

Both these teams will be dangerous in February.

Strasburg/Zeeland has been a pleasant surprise that makes the Region more interesting.

I would rank them this way right now:
1. Strasburg/Zeeland
2. LaMoure-LM
3. Linton-HMB

4. South Border

5. Edgeley-Kulm
6. Kidder County
7. Napoleon

8. Ellendale
9. P-B-K
10. Barnes County North
11. Central Prairie

I would go:

1. LLM
2. SZ

3. LHMB

4-11 Any order you want/any given day: EKM, SB, KC, BCN, Nap, Ell, PBK, CP

It is crazy how balanced this region is, especially after the top 2-3-4 teams.
