It certainly isn't an impossible scenario to see Thompson winning all 4 major sport championships this school year. Has any other school every done this (or even 3 out of 4)?

Major sports being...VB, FB, GBB & BBB?? Interestingly don't they have a chance at Baseball as well?

I'm not positive, but I don't think anyone has ever won a 9 man state title and a class B basketball title.

I realize that doesn't answer your question.

Trinity also won the award in 2005-06 for winning AA Football, B Boys Basketball, and B Boys Track. But mixing the girls in like that has got to be unprecedented.

I've always considered the fall and winter sports to be the 'major' sports, but I realize that not everyone thinks that way. Thompson could well win baseball, and maybe even come in 2nd in softball.

Wrestling, Hockey and Baseball fans would argue what the “major sports” are. However, Bishop Ryan won State titles in Girls and Boys Basketball in 1993-94. Don’t know how they fared in football or volleyball, though.

Bishop Ryan won FB the next fall...VB did not make it to State

Velva won 3 titles in a school year back in the 80s. Football, Wrestling and Baseball, I believe.

The intrigue with Thompson has to be that both genders are having tons of success! Most of the time you only see one gender dominating their major sports.

Hockey may be a 'major' sport for class A, but obviously not for class B.

Different people have different favorite sports, but as for classifying a sport as 'major' for the general population, one thing to go by would be whether or not the state championship is on statewide TV (and yes, I realize that VB is not televised by network tv)

Class A state hockey is televised and yes, it may not be a major sport for Class B (I wish it was ) but it is for Class A.

Since this thread is in the 'Class B" section, I didn't put hockey in consideration for a 'major' sport. Wrestling only covers about 1/3 as many schools as basketball, so I also don't include that in the 'major' category.

Is hockey that big of a sport in ND though? It doesn't seem at all competitive. Red River and Central win 8 out of 10 years. Minnesota will sell out the Xcel Energy Center for their state tournament, what does attendance look like in ND?

Don't want to take anything away from the program or athletes at Thompson. What they have accomplished in recent years is amazing and there is no doubt that lots of work went in across the board. Not knowing much about the district my question is how does a town with a population of 1000 have over 200 kids in high school? Does some of there district contain Grand Forks developments or are the open enrollment numbers just that high?

southern Grand Forks has grown into the Thompson school district...there is also lots of farmland in the Thompson school district

They don't have 200+ kids in the HS. DPI says 149 for their fall enrollment in 2018

Take a look at Kindred. 212 enrollment with a 762 population.

Kindred's school district includes southern Horace, Davenport, Oxbow, Wild Rice, Hickson, Leonard area and lots of farmland as well.

I do stand corrected. The numbers came straight off of their school's website which says they have over 220 students in 7-12 not 9-12 as I had originally interpreted.

There was an article in the Grand Forks Herald a year or two ago stating that Thompson open enrolled around 90 students. It also mentioned that it had something like 75 open enrolling out of their school. So only a net gain of 15 or so students due to open enrollment.
