Here's the story; Did they get it right?

Fargo South’s Meghan Roehrich and Grand Forks Central’s Caitlin Farroh made things look simple on the basketball court this season. But the decision to put both seniors on the all-state team was even simpler.

Roehrich and Farroh were both unanimously named first-team all-state after finishing their high school careers in dominating fashion.

Farroh, who was recently named the North Dakota Gatorade Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year, led the state in rebounding and was second in the state in scoring.

The 6-foot-1 forward, who will be attending Northern State University this fall, scored 22.1 points and grabbed 17.6 rebounds per game this year, helping her become only the second North Dakota player in Class A history to record more than 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. She also led the state with 74 blocks this season.

Roerich led the state in scoring with a 24.2 points per game average and was second in the East Region in rebounding (9.4 rpg) as she helped lead the Bruins to a fourth-place finish at the Class A state tournament.

Farroh and the Knights defeated Fargo South in the third-place game with the help of Farroh’s game-high 23 points and 12 rebounds.

Turtle Mountain’s Sasha Golus also landed a spot on the all-state first team after leading the West Region in scoring with an average of 21.6 points per game, while also grabbing 14.0 rebounds per game — third best in the state.

Minot’s Holly Johnson was named first-team all-state after proving to be one of the most dangerous shooters from beyond the arc.

The senior forward, who finished the year with the second-best three-point percentage in the West, averaged 21.6 points per game and 11.4 rebounds this season as she helped lead the Majettes to a sixth-place finish at the state tournament.

Devils Lake’s Hannah Elshaug was the fifth member to earn first-team all-state accolades after averaging 21.3 points per contest. She also hauled in 8.6 rebounds and blocked 18 shots.

Second team

The West Region had three people land spots on the all-state second team this year, including the region’s leading rebounder in Anna Hruby, of Bismarck.

The senior post averaged 14.2 rebounds per game — second best in the state — while also putting up 17.2 points per game.

Joining Hruby on second-team all-state is Dickinson’s Jess Herauf and Williston’s Jaclyn Lee. Lee, a senior, led the West with 61 blocks and was second in the region in field-goal percentage (56.2). She averaged 16.2 points and 8.67 rebounds per game.

Herauf hauled in 9.33 rebounds per game this season to go along with her 15.0 points per game average. She was also among the West’s best with 47 steals.

Representing the East region on the all-state second team is Katelyn Holland of West Fargo and Fargo North’s Alyssa Dehne.

Dehne, who helped lead the Spartans to a state title this season, paced North’s offensive charge by averaging 15.8 points per game. She scored a game-high 18 points against Fargo Shanley in the state Class A title game on Saturday at the Fargodome.

Holland averaged 18.1 points per game for the Packers and led the East with 47 three-pointers made.

Class A All-State

First team

Meghan Roehrich, Fargo South; Caitlin Farroh, Grand Forks Central; Sasha Golus, Turtle Mountain; Holly Johnson, Minot; Hanna Elshaug, Devils Lake.

Second team

Katelyn Holland, West Fargo; Alyssa Dehn, Fargo North; Jess Herauf, Dickinson; Anna Hruby, Bismarck; Jaclyn Lee, Williston.

Just an FYI...Holly Johnson is a junior.

SO WHAT??
I have never seen Herauf play basketball but I hear she is a great basketball player--even better than VB and she is a GREAT volleyball player (Player of the year in fact.) So what if her team is so -so? She still deserves recognition for being a very good BB player.

Golus is very deserving too in my opinion(obviously so--, a Miss BB finalist!)

Some people on this site say that good players get their teams to State. I don't necessary believe that. Sometimes you have great players and nothing to go with them and maybe a coach who can't quite put it all together and make that great player even better.

This year there was an unusually good group of seniors. It will be a very entertaining Lions All Star game this year!

And sometimes you have a situation like this year in the EDC where there were 6 very good teams and two of them (West Fargo and Devils Lake) got edged out for state tournament berths.

I agree that the process is currently all about the numbers. Not sure there is a better way, but I don't think it should be just about stats. BTW, the ten that made it were all tops in scoring (10 of the top 12). So it looks to me like this voting is done purely by points scored.

Seriousely, the team that made it to the state championship game did not have a player on the All-State Team?!?!?! Shanley is punished because they are such a balanced team. They have any number of players that can come in and get the job done. As a a team they are well-rounded and as indivduals that have great all around stats that speak to their incredible talent and their generosity on the court....This is a grave and serious disappointement to me as a lover of the sport.

As a Shanley fan...I think the only one that had a chance at making All-State was Nicole Carew.

Carew being left off the team for girls who were on teams that didn't make state is a travesty. Obviously Shanley lost the title game but she had 19 and 21 pts in the state tournament before that, on top of her strong play during the regular season! The Coaches clearly only looked at PPG, ignoring team success, which is ridiculous (not to mention that Carew was strong in PPG as well.) No other all-star team does this. In the NBA Kevin Love only got in as an injury replacement despite leading the league in rebounding AND posting 20+ pts a game because his team wasn't winning. That's the right way to do things. Stats are meaningless when your team doesn't win. When half of the ALL-STATE team doesn't even make it to State.....Horrible. Getting to the state tournament is easier in north dakota than in basically any other state in the entire country. If you can't do it, you shouldn't be on the all-state team. And if you want to include people who didn't make state, it should be 1 or 2 at most, not 5!

Dont blame good players for not having other players around them that work hard to improve in the off season to get their teams to state. There was a great deal of great seniors this year around the state with Johnson being the only junior on the team. Who would you take off the list to put a shanley girl on? Shanley had a lot of good basketball players that worked well together for a common team goal not looking for individual awards. For this reason there was not a star that was all state caliber. Not knocking the players at all just saying "Would you rather play in a state championship game or get individual accolades?" At any point of the season, there are girls on that team that could have decided that it wasn't about the team and that is what made Shanley good was that they were looking out for the team and not themselves.

It's ironic that people complain that stats are the only thing considered, then they point out stats for a player in a tournament! Shanley was the 3rd and North was 4th team to come out of the EDC tourney. It was somewhat of a surprise they were both in the championship. Century was #1 in the state pretty much all season and won the WDA, and didn't place a girl on the list. Mandan won the WDA for the season w/ a returning all-stater, and they didn't have a player on the list. A lot of outstanding players didn't make the all-state team, but no undeserving player made it either.

I think all of the girls on the list are very deserving; however, I think when an excellent player is on a bad team, they tend to get more individual awards than an excellent player on a good team.

For example: Katelyn Holland gets on the All-State team - she is WF's main scorer. I think she and Alley Fisher have very similar skill sets. If you put Holland on a team with Roehrich, and Fisher on a team with a bunch of role players, Fisher probably gets more recognition.

If you take Larson off of North's team and add her to Minot's, North doesn't win a state championship, but Dehne probably gets 1st team all-state, Johnson gets 2nd team, and Minot does better at state.

Shanley is extremely balanced, and they can win games with different people stepping up. They didn't need one person to score 25 every night, and that's why they were so successful. But, for statistics, no one really stands out.

If Holland would have played for South, they might have won a couple of championships, and if Larson played for Minot, Johnson would be unstoppable. Right now Johnson has to threaten the 3-pointer, and then run down and post up, rebound and score, and then finish as the center on their zone defense. Larson is good, but she gets to play out of the paint, because they also had a post role player who did her job. Good players are good no matter what uniform they wear, and a championship team with no standouts is not a sacrafice for any player.

A championship team that is better than (almost) every other team has better players than every other team. And if you watched Shanley this year you could tell that some of their players were better than the rest on their team. They would also play better than the players that made the all state team (and were regularly beaten by Shanley) when they played head to head.

IMO, the ten players selected All-state were all very deserving. I agree with Run that the one girl from Shanley that could've been considered is Nicole Carew. In response to a couple of replies, I do not consider it a travesty that she was not selected. She was the best player on a solid team that finished 3rd in EDC tournament and 2nd in State. She played with intensity and was a player who could score, rebound and handle the point when Kenney was out of the game. Not being as familiar with the west but from watching EDC games, I would place Farroh, Roehrich and Dehne and Elshaug ahead of Carew and Carew close to Holland. Katelyn Holland is a very good player and had better ppg (18.4 to 12.3), rebounds and assists and had to step up with the loss of Carissa Becher (All EDC in 2010) due to injury and that was most likely the difference in Holland getting selected. An argument for Carew is that Holland did take 33% of WF shots versus 18% for Carew so if they swapped uniforms, I think the numbers would've changed as well but I think Carew would rather have played at state and not been All-state than vice versa - it is a team game first. I also think Carew/Kenney split some votes from the media writers as did Pederson/Longtin from Mandan and they were most likely 11th - 14th in the balloting in no particular order. Individual awards are nice but any player would say a state team championship is the best. Good luck to all the senior girls as it was a talented group and fun to watch.

Kenney shot 18 percent from 3-point range and didn't crack the top 10 in scoring. Carew could have made the team. Both are good players. Shanley had three really good players, but it didn't have a superstar.

Before I continue, I agree all 10 all-staters belong on the team.

I would have been comfortable with several others, too, including Carew.

I'd say Longtin has the biggest beef about not getting on the team. She averaged 15 points and nearly 4 assists per game for Mandan. She was also a good free throw shooter.

North's Kira Larson could have made it. She was the second-best player in the state tournament behind teammate Alyssa Dehne. I'm not sure when they count votes.

Fee from Central also had a very good year, shooting a state perimeter-best 47 percent from the field and averaging 14 points and nearly 5 assists.

I agree with all of that. I do not think, however, that five players who did not get to the state tournament should have made it. To have such a strong, and balanced field, I think team success should be the tie breaker. Give it to Fee, Carew and maybe Larson over those who didn't make it.

Do they limit the field to ten every year?

Since we are talking about making state, Shanley could have really used a player like Holland in the championship game. She had a great year at the 3-pt mark for WF.

Mic Longtin definitely deserved to be on the team. There was a post on the Miss Basketball topic about Mandan not having an all state caliber player. If you think that, then you did not watch Longtin play. She had an outstanding year. Lead in scoring and assists on the conference champion team and deserved to be an all-stater, no question. If you put Longtin, Carew, Kinney, Pederson on a WIlliston or Dickinson, they would be scoring over 20 a game as well. The writers and sportscasters should get a clue if they are going to vote on this stuff. They missed some obvious ones; most definitely Longtin and Carew.

Why would they score over 20 ppg on Williston or Dickinson when they weren't on the teams they are on? There are great players on the Dickinson and Williston team, they just couldn't get it together this year as a team. Longtin was a hard working player who was a tough defender and a strong 3-point shooter but struggled with shooting percentages and rebounding. I think Jamestown dominated the 3-pointers and steals categories in the WDA so Longtin wasn't going to standout statewide.

Players with better teams that share the ball will not score as many points and will not rack up as many stats in general. Yet they are more than capable of doing that. In some sense they are more worthy of the all-state team if they sacrifice some of their own personal stats for the betterment of the team.

@L2DS8: I think a major problem with the entire system is that voters haven't seen as many games as they should. They look purely at the stats.

My question: Why don't the coaches vote on this too? Not only do they personally see most all players but they also have access to a lot of film.
