Starr to point direction for Valley City girls basketball

New Valley City girls basketball head coach Waylan Starr knows how to win.
“He certainly brings a lot of experience and immediate credibility to the position,” Valley City Activities Director Al Cruchet said. “I think he knows the kind of commitment on the part of the coach and as a player to reach those successful goals.”
Starr won a state championship as a high school player, and he has taken teams to state as a coach.
Starr grew up in the Bisbee-Egeland area and helped the Bearcats to a Class B State Basketball championship in 1989.
“As a player, he was real scrappy, and he’s going to ask for a real dedicated commitment from our girls,” Cruchet said.
Starr played under Coach Alan Olson at the time. Olson now teaches education at Valley City State University.
“He was a good coach, very fun to play under,” Starr said.
Starr said he learned what it took to win a championship from the experience.
“Of course a little luck never hurts, and I think we had some of that on our road to Bismarck that year,” Starr said.
Starr reached another two state tournaments as a girls’ basketball head coach with Kindred in 2006 and 2007. He also received 2006 District 2 Coach of the Year honors.
“It was very rewarding,” Starr said about his first trip to state with Kindred. “We came in as the under dog, and we upset Maple Valley in the districts and then we turned around and upset them in the regions. We went on to play some very good basketball the three nights that we had there that first year.”
The Vikings took third at state that year, but they finished sixth at state the following year. Starr said the girls had more pressure on them the second time around, and it affected them.
“When we got back the second year, the pressure was there,” Starr said. “I think that is something that the girls will tell you, that they wished they wouldn’t have focused so much on that.”
Starr said he learned a number of lessons coaching during his eight years at Kindred as an assistant or head coach.
“When it comes down to making decisions, you’ve got to be stern about making your decisions,” Starr said.
Starr already has a picture of what decisions to make with the Hi-Liners girls basketball team as he served as the Hi-Liners’ assistant coach last season. He will have five seniors and six juniors back. He plans to have the girls running the floor and playing pressure defense in hopes to improve upon a 0-20 season.
