Another coaching change

Postby Baller » Tue Mar 25, 2008 9:54 pm

Heard on the radio that Terry Porter resigned as girls basketball coach at Fargo North.

That leaves opening at North, WF, Bismarck High, and Minot.

Did Porter come to North right after Anne Watkins? I ask because he was quoted on the news last night saying "at least I left the program in better shape than I got it". If he came right after Watkins, that is quite a statement beings that they had just been state runner up. Granted, even though their record was 5-17, they were very young and I think that an incoming coach has some things to work with.

I found this on the North girls website:
Years Coach
1979-83 Dale Gardner
1984-93 Peggy Stibbe
1994-95 Pat Jacobson
1996-97 Mark Askerooth
1998-2003 Ann Watkins
2003-Present Terry Porter

Your right the program is not better now than when Terry took over, I dont know how many wins he had at North but it cant be more than 15 - 20, the past few years were brutal, yes they had a young team this year but they still only won 5 games, South was very young too but they won 21 games! What does that tell you?

I still think I would rather inherit the North job than the WF job. They will have Larson, Wixo, Dehne, Tesch, Flacksbarth, some other freshman they moved up(Lopez), the Noel girl. I think if you bring in the right coach they will be much improved from past years.

I think that record was thru 2005 - if I read the coaches page right on their web site??
North varsity girls record was 3 - 19 last year and 5 - 17 this year...

north surprisingly almost made state this year, losing to DL in the qualifier by 6. i dont think they lost anyone significant and defintly no one who started. the team has a good chance to make state next year and almost for sure in 2 years. not quite sure what porter meant by that comment..

I always thought Studberg did a good job at Devils Lake. Complaints from some of the locals was that she worked the kids too hard?? What Manson is it?

Metcalf has some experience now and will give it her heart and soul.

I think WF has the potential (SHOULD BE especially when a third Fargo school dilutes Fargo South) to be a powerhouse year in and year out. Sounds like it needs to be rebuilt and it would take a few years.

If true it would hurt Shanley. It gives Bismarck an experienced coach that will handle the kids and parents. Things would change at BHS and Jacobson would be in control.

Shanley will rebuild next year and coaches come and go. Hopefully Jacobson stays knowing that two years from now Shanley will be contending again.

Jacobson has to do what is best for him and his family.

If it is "internal" then it has to be Bart Manson.

Tim J has been the girls coach at Shanley for the past 2 seasons. He was the boys coach there in the late 90's when they won back to back championships, then he moved to Roseville for a some years before moving back. His son Nick played at Utah and is now playing overseas and Adam tried to go D1 before finishing his career at either UND or NDSU (I cant remember which one)

We would go to everyone of Jeff's games and he and I got to be very good friends. I actually wen to KU and stayed up their with him etc. I thought the son was the one applying and had no clue the dad was still around. Thanks Baller

Glad to hear Carl because he will do some good things with those young girls. I just state that is what I heard and I even stated that it was a rumor that I heard. Never sure if they are true or not until you go directly to the source.

sorry overreacted a little...but it just seemed so far from the truth. And you are right, those young girls on the shanley team will do great things with him coaching them. He has proven over the last couple years how good of a coach he is. Also, you could tell at the state tournament how much he cares for the girls and how much they care for him - they will do great things over the next 4 years

Metcalf got the girls basketball coaching position at West Fargo. West Fargo parents have told me she did a very good job with their freshmen girls. Good Luck to her and hopefully the "Pack is Back"! The EDC needs them to be competative again!

I think the AD has made some interesting decisions in the last couple years...can't say that she would have been on the top of my list.
