Bruins outpace Huskies

Fargo South kicked off the 2008 post-season with a convincing 75-39 win over the Wahpeton Huskies on Thursday afternoon in the Alerus Center in Grand Forks. The Bruins slowly and steadily pulled away from the Huskies throughout the game. Siri Burck was able to get some easy transition hoops, which included a steal, basket, and foul shot to start the game, and Kristen Anstadt helped out from the post spot with 11 first half points. The only negative for the Bruins was the fact that they couldn't quite find the range from the three point line in the opening half to take full advantage of the packed in zone of the Huskies. South shot just 1 of 12 from downtown in the opening half, but still managed to take a 37-20 halftime lead, sparked in the last couple of seconds by a steal and layup by Meghan Roehrich. South continued to pull away after halftime, as Siri Burck again got ahead of the pack for a number of breakaway layups, as did Amy Stroup. Alley Fisher was steady all night as well off the bench, scrapping on defense and hitting a pair of three pointers and also converted a three point play. The Bruins were able to rest their starters for much of the second half, something that should help South as the three day tournament continues. Kristen Anstadt led South with 15 points, joined in double figures by Siri Burck with 14, and Alley Fisher with 11. South now takes on Devils Lake on Friday night with the winner getting a berth in next week's state tournament.

South advances to title game, state tournament

The Fargo South Bruins advanced to next week's state tournament in Bismarck thanks to a big 77-51 win over Devils Lake on Friday night in the Alerus Center. Caitlyn Haring got the Bruins off to a hot start, scoring 7 of South's first 9 points, including a three pointer, and the other Bruin guards kept it going after that. South knocked down 5 first half three pointers from 4 different players, and ran out to a 21-5 lead to start the game. Freshman Meghan Roehrich led the Bruins with 13 first half points, and did a great job attacking the basket and scoring in traffic. Fellow freshman Alley Fisher came off the bench firing from downtown for the second straight game, as she dropped in a pair of threes in the first half, complimented by another pair in the second half. Sophomore Siri Burck also hit from downtown and made a nice driving basket as well, and South took a commanding 40-21 lead into halftime. In the second half, Kristen Anstadt, Abbi Weatherspoon, and Amy Stroup got things going inside for South as the Firebirds tried to keep tabs on the Bruins perimeter shooters. Siri Burck was able to find players all night as she dished out 9 assists. Meghan Roehrich led the Bruins in scoring with 18 points, joined in double figures by Alley Fisher with 14, Caitlyn Haring with 11, and Kristen Anstadt with 10. South plays Shanley on Saturday night for the East Region Championship.

Bruins win 3rd straight East title with win over Shanley

Fargo South made big play after big play down the stretch on Saturday night to defeat Shanley 54-44 in the championship game of the East Region tournament in the Alerus Center. Both teams had to shake off the early game jitters, as neither team could find the bottom of the basket for the first 3 minutes of the game. Shanley's Mara Paulson broke the ice with a short jumper to draw first blood for the Deacons, but that was quickly answered by a long two pointer by Meghan Roehrich, and both teams relaxed after that. Shanley then got on a hot streak and jumped out to a 10-4 lead, but a basket by Katie Lee and a three pointer by Siri Burck made it 10-9. South trailed 15-11 when a three point play by Katie Lee began to give the Bruins control of the game. The Bruins cranked up their defensive pressure, forcing Shanley into turnovers on 5 of the next 6 possessions, which included a ten-second violation from their full court pressure. On offense, Meghan Roehrich took over. The freshman guard continually was able to penetrate the Deacon defense and either draw fouls or score the basket. A three pointer by Caitlyn Haring capped the 13-0 run and South held a 24-15 lead. A pair of baskets by Shanley cut it to 24-19, but South ended the half on a 6-0 run as Amy Stroup got free inside for a pair of hoops, and Siri Burck scored on a fastbreak layup on a steal and assist from Caitlyn Haring to give the Bruins a 30-19 halftime lead. In the second half, big plays seemed to stand out. Abbi Weatherspoon made her presence felt, as she took over inside. The 6'2 junior had 4 blocked shot in half, each seemingly coming at a cruicial time, and also scored a pair of hoops inside and got to the freethrow line 8 times. Siri Burck also was a thorn in the Shanley shooters' sides as well as she blocked 5 shots on the night, one of which led to a fastbreak basket by Caitlyn Haring, giving South their biggest lead of the night at 39-25 and forcing a Shanley time-out. The Deacons tried to mount a late game comeback, and cut the lead back to 42-35 with 6 minutes left, but Alley Fisher erased that momentum by nailing a three pointer to push the lead back to 45-35. Other big plays that stand out down the stretch was a Catilyn Haring offensive rebound and putback basket and a Meghan Roehrich tough driving basket and a foul for a three point play with just over 4 minutes to play to give South a 50-39 lead. The Deacons still wouldn't quit though, and when Mara Paulson hit a shot and Annie Jackson followed with a three pointer, the lead was cut to 51-44 with a minute and a half left to play. Shanley got the ball back but Caitlyn Haring made one last huge play for South as she tipped a pass and recovered the ball for her 6th steal of the game, essentially icing the game with under a minute to play. Freethrows down the stretch led to the final 54-44 score. Meghan Roehrich led the Bruins in scoring for the second straight night, while Caitlyn Haring led them in rebounds, steals, and assists. South has now won 14 games in a row and will play the 6:00 game in Bismarck on Thursday against Minot. Siri Burck, Catilyn Haring, Amy Stroup, and Kristen Anstadt were all named All-Conference, and Coach Flaagan was named East Coach of the Year. Mara Paulson of Shanley was named East Senior Player of the Year.

Boxscore:
Fargo South: Roehrich 3 6-8 12, Burck 3 1-2 8, Lee 2 1-1 5, Fisher 1 0-0 3, Stroup 3 1-2 7, Anstadt 0 2-2 2, Haring 3 2-2 9, Weatherspoon 2 4-8 8; Totals 17 17-25 54, Three point goals: Fisher, Burck, Roehrich

Fargo South advances to semi-finals

Fargo South held off a scrappy Bismarck Century team, and posted a hard fought 66-62 win in the opening round of the State Class A Tournament on Thursday night in Bismarck. In almost a repeat performance of their last game in the EDC championship, both teams struggled to score early on, and then the Bruins found themselves trailing for much of the early part of the game, then put together a nice run to lead at halftime. In Thursday's game, which featured a total of 19 lead changes, the teams traded baskets for the first 6 minutes, and the Bruins led 8-7 on a Siri Burck steal and layup. The Patriots though then started to stretch out the lead, scoring the next 7 points to lead 14-8. Alley Fisher ended that run with a three pointer. Century responded again with a run, and a Tasha Michelson three with just under 8 minutes left in the half gave Century their biggest lead at 21-13. Thats when the Bruins began to get back in the game. Siri Burck nailed a three pointer, and a three from Meghan Roehrich with just under 4 minutes left allowed South to regain the lead at 25-24. Kristen Anstadt and Alley Fisher continued the three point barrage, hitting back to back threes to give South a 34-29 lead, which looked to be the halftime score, but an offensive putback basket at the halftime buzzer by Carli Peterson cut the South lead to 34-31 at half. In the second half, the teams again traded hoops. Amy Stroup led the charge for the Bruins, scoring the team's first 3 baskets, but the Patriots still led 41-40. For the next 7 minutes of the game though, the Bruins were able to seize control. Siri Burck hit another three pointer, Amy Stroup scored inside, Katie Lee hit a long two pointer right before the shot clock buzzer, and Caitlyn Haring had a steal and pass ahead to Siri Burck for a layup that gave South their biggest lead at 58-45 with 7 minutes left in the game. The Pats were not going to give up though, and got hot the last part of the game. A Carli Peterson three and Madi Buck hoop cut the Bruins lead to 61-60 with under a minute to play. Catilyn Haring then made two clutch freethrows to push the lead back out to 63-60, then a huge steal and layup by Meghan Roehrich gave South a 65-60 lead with 30 seconds left. The Patriots scored again to make it 65-62 and put Caitlyn Haring back on the line with 9 seconds left. The all-conference guard iced the game by hitting the first freethrow, and the Patriots couldn't score again. The Bruins were led by freshman Mehgan Roehrich and senior Amy Stroup with 13 points each, while junior Catilyn Haring had her usual sparkling floor game, scoring 7 points, grabbing 9 rebounds, dishing out 7 assists, and collecting 5 steals. South is now 20-3 on the season, has tied a school record with 15 straight wins, and will play top ranked Bismarck on Friday night.

South falls in Semi-finals

Fargo South ran into a Bismarck team who brought their "A" game with them to the semi-finals on Friday night, and the top ranked Demons ended South's title hopes with a 62-50 win at the Bismarck Civic Center. The Demons started out with some hot shooting, and jumped out to a 13-5 lead early in the game, with South's only points coming from freshman Meghan Roehrich, who led all scorers in the game with 14 points. Roehrich hit a rainbow three pointer to get the Bruins on the board, then followed that up with a pair of freethrows. The quick start by the Demons made the Bruins play in catch-up mode all night, as the lead hovered in the 10 to 12 point range for most of the first half. Behind Roehrich's 10 first half points and the 6 points off the bench from Katie Lee, the Bruins stayed within shouting distance at 37-25 at halftime. In the second half though, the Bruins tried to rally back. South cranked up their defensive pressure, and forced the Demons into turnovers on 7 of the first 8 possessions after the break. Siri Burck, Caitlyn Haring, and Meghan Roehrich all caused problems up front for the Demons, while Amy Stroup was able to get her offensive game going, scoring all 11 of her points in the second half, most on some nice drives to the basket. By the 11 minute mark of the second half, the Bruins had cut the lead to just 43-40, and appeared to have the momentum, but thats when Bismarck wrestled control of the game back. Sara Feeney hit a pair of tough pull up jumpers to regain calm to Bismarck, and the lead stayed at 8 to 12 points the remainder of the game. Caitlyn Haring and Amy Stroup joined Meghan Roehrich in double figures with 12 and 11. The loss drops South to 20-4 on the season, and sets up a third place game with Shanley, the fourth meeting of the year with the Deacons on Saturday.

Boxscore:
Fargo South: Roehrich 4 4-6 14, Burck 1 2-2 4, Lee 3 0-0 6, Fisher 0 2-2 2, Weatherspoon 0 1-4 1, Stroup 5 1-4 11, Haring 4 4-6 12; Totals 17 14-24 50, Three point goals: Roehrich 2

South takes 3rd place at State

With a teammate down and on her way to the hospital, the Fargo South Bruins used that emotion to run past Shanley, completing the 4 game season sweep of the Deacons, and take home third place in the State Tournament. After starting down 2-0, South's Caitlyn Haring had back to back baskets to give the Bruins a 4-2 lead, and on the ensuing possession, less than 4 minutes into the game, Meghan Roehrich had a steal and was heading in for a layup, when she was fouled hard on the attempt and ended up in the hospital with a pair of broken bones in her wrist. After that play, the Bruins seemed energized to rally around their teammate, and cranked up their defensive pressure, scoring 10 straight points to lead 14-2. South held the Deacons scoreless for nearly 7 minutes in that run to take control of the game. The lead hovered at that 10 point range for most of the remainder of the half, until Caitlyn Haring ended the half the way she began it - with back to back hoops to give South a 32-18 lead at halftime. After a Shanley basket to begin the second half made it 32-20, the Bruins then scored on a three point play by Kristen Anstadt and a three pointer by Katie Lee and with just over a minute gone by had their biggest lead of the game at 38-20. Molly Brenner countered with a pair of three pointers back to back to get Shanley close again, but the Bruins had the answers to any Deacon comeback attempt on this night. Caitlyn Haring had another hoop to disrupt any Shanley momentum, and Katie Lee also had big baskets to keep the lead in double figures. Amy Stroup's driving basket gave South a 44-31 lead with under 7 minutes to play and the Bruins were not challenged after that. Siri Burck did her usual great job of making it difficult for the opponents guards to get anything done offensively, while Caitlyn Haring had her second straight "double-double" with 12 points and 14 rebounds. The win gives South a 21-4 record on the year which included an EDC regular season title and the East Region Championship. South graduates 3 seniors from this year's team, all of whom will be greatly missed!

Boxscore:
Fargo South: Roehrich 0 0-0 0, Burck 1 1-2 3, Lee 5 3-3 14, Fisher 3 3-3 10, Stroup 1 0-0 2, Anstadt 1 8-9 10, Haring 6 0-0 12, Weatherspoon 0 1-2 1; Totals 17 16-19 52, Three point goals: Fisher, Lee

Excellent job South Bruins I have enjoyed watching you play. Hate to see the seniors leave you girls rock.Already looking forward to next year, Flaagan you have some great talent coming back I pick you for a 4th EDC title and hopefully first in state.
I wish a speedy recovery to Ms. Roerich on her broken wrist, that foul was unnecessary, I guess thats what happens when you see a team 4 times in a season, emotions running very high, but anyway great year.

Ur crazy...that foul was hard but it was a good foul she went for the ball- the girl fell on her arm wrong and Jackson obviously felt bad. Flaagan told her as much and to not listen to the South fans who were completely inappropriate. If the girl wouldn't have broken her arm it wouldn't have been a big deal. Kristen Anstadt on the other hand did show class by going up to Jackson after the game and giving her a hug - Kristen has shown great class all year and is a great example of sportsmanship. It seems that it was not the south players or coaches who were unsportsmanlike but the parents and that is just sad.

I have been a Fargo South fan for many years. I was at the game. Anne Jackson had no intention of hurting anyone. It was an emotional and hard fought game between two very talented teams. I hope this incendent does not blemish either teams success. I have seen both of these teams and playes compete years since traveling ball and they are all great athelets and speccial girls. Good luck to all of them in their life after high school basketball.

Good for Kristen Anstadt. She is a good person with a huge herart! Also, we should all hope for Megan's Roerich's speedy recovery. And we should all understand that competition in a contact sport, yes basketball is a contact sport, can lead to injury. Anne Jackson never wanted to hurt anyone. I am sure she would like to replay the whole thing over so that it never happened.

Do not blemish either teams success with these types of comments. Also, please do not paint all FSH parents and players with the same brush because a few made bad comments. Several of us were telling people to be quit. I have seen both of these teams and playes compete for over four years since traveling ball and they are all great athelets and speccial girls. Good luck to all of them in their life after high school basketball.

Where in my first quote did I BLEMISH either teams success, NEVER DID. Both teams are very good but one better than the other.I to was at the game and never heard any south parents say a word about quit yelling. I agree the foul was hard but UNNECESSARY, going for the ball is one thing , but coming from behind and giving a shoulder is another. I know miss jackson intent wasn't to hurt another player but is was to foul very hard and were that lead was an injury.
