I am wondering too - are they hiring within the organization or someone out of the organization? Hope there is word soon. Hiring someone within would be to their advantage I would think but then who am I to say. They have so much talent coming up and I am sure those girls are wondering too who their coach is going to be.

I hope that is true. However, I wonder why it would not been announced by now then. However, I guess the resignation of Coach Amundson took awhile to get out in the media, although everyone in the state knew before it was officially announced.

Marv Pedersen has been taking girls to the summer tourneys so I assume that he will be the coach. Hope so - he sure knows the program! It sure is funny why it has to be kept a secret for so long. Wonder who the assistants will be?

Why haven't they officially announced anything on this?! It seems like it is taking them quite some time!

What WONDERFUL news! "Pete" will be awesome and has long been such a huge part in all Mandans success. He's tough, but fair, his positive (non ridiculing) style will be evident in the games and in practise. Mandan's is so lucky to have this high caliber coach at the helm.

What does anyone think about what Mandan Braves Girls will do this year? Let's get some talking going.

You can never rule out Mandan. They will be a contendor! Their new coach was an assistant for years so it should be fairly seamless. They have a really good freshman class and will be interesting to see if any players will make it to the Varsity level like they have in years past.

BHS has a new coach for the 2nd year in a row. That is going to be difficult to get results until they are able to establish a feeder program.

Century will be the team to beat. They will struggle against Mandan's press but Mandan lacks in size.

Belcourt will be tough because they also return alot of players. Goulash is a very good player and a hard matchup for Mandan because of her size. It will be more of a mental challenge for Belcourt come tournament time. They have the talent but they will need to work on poise. Mandan is a tournament team and will always bring it up a notch.

Dickinson has Herauf and is also very talented. This is actually the best team to match up against Mandan. Again, Mandan has the poise come tournament time and we'll have to wait to see as the other teams develop maturity.

Never count Mandan out!

If some of the freshman crack the Varsity, there will be some height there also for Mandan. I don't think you can count Mandan out.

Mandan will be a contender for the 4th spot in the WDA to go to State.

1.Century, 2.Belcourt, 3.Dickinson, 4.Bismarck/Mandan (toss up)

I don't think Century will be a "shoe in" because they try to make post players guards. I think they will struggle against a Mandan or Dickinson because their ball handling is weak.

Depending on the poise and maturity of Belcourt and Dickinson, Mandan will make a good run for 1st or 2nd. 1st if Century doesn't find a decent guard that can shoot and handle the ball under control. You can't rely on a banked 3pointer that Jossart had. They will need an outside presence to be a dominating team else teams will just pack the paint.

You posted earlier that Century was the team to beat! Century beat Mandan's press when they had Collins and w/o Collins, Mandan doesn't have a press. Mandan's new coaching staff has a lot of work ahead of them if they are building off of last year's 3rd place loss to Century. The girls gave up when they decided it wasn't worth it.

Century struggled against everybody's press. Even BHS last year got them at the Civic Center and at state because they couldn't handle the guard pressure. They don't have a decent outside shot.

Century is the team to beat because they returned all of their starters and took 3rd. It is really irrelevant whether you take 3rd or 4th. Only 1st counts!

Their top player Herauf and almost all their players. They split with alot of team and was somewhat inconsistent last year. They had a young team and depending on how they mature could be a contendor. Herauf is 1st cousin to the Feeneys from Bismarck and played with them on the ECI teams. Very athletic.

Kara Froehlich 5-5 G
Taylor Halter 5-7 G
Ashley Krieg 5-8 G
Ashley Jahner 5-8 F
Natalya Fode 6-0 P
Brooke Monroe 6-0 P
Justine Braunagel 5-6 G
Kaitlin Ridl 5-5 G
Jess Herauf 5-9 G
Brie Lynch 5-8 G
Megan Michaelson 5-10 P
Paige Fischer 5-7 G
Cori Schwieger 5-8 P
Kori Bowen 6-0 P

Well...from what it looks like they will have two starters out with injuries now. Let's just hope things pull together soon!

The coaching is killing them. Until he coaches for the team instead of 1 player they'll continue to blow leads and lose close winnable games. Other coaches are making better adjustments. But 9 of their 10 games have been on the road so hopefully they can turn it around with some wins at home.

Stats from the tribune:
MANDAN (48): Elizabeth Meyer 0-0 0-0 0, Amanda Vander Wal 0-5 1-4 1, Brittni Winkler 0-1 0-0 0, Steph Pedersen 5-21 6-7 17, Mic Longtin 2-13 1-4 7, Kristi Zachmeier 2-11 0-0 6, Taylor Miller 1-9 0-2 3, Sadie Berger 4-7 0-0 10, Amber Riopelle 1-3 0-0 2. Sam Larson 1-1 0-0 2. Totals: 16-71 8-17 48.

Pedersen, Longtin, Zachmeier and Miller were 10 for 54 (18.5%) If 2/3 of your shots are at 18.5 %, you will not win ball games. In a tribune article Coach Pedersen called himself Mandan's "offensive guru" when he was the JV coach. Looks like he was taking credit for what was Greg Amundson's. He needs to go back to the clipboard and come up with something different.
