I am not predicting any surprises this tournament. The bottom four teams have very little shot at making it to regionals. Central Cass hasn't played a Game 4 all year, it will be interesting to see if they will have to during districts. Here are my predictions:

Thursday, October 27th
1.) #1 Central Cass vs. #8 Maple Valley
2.) #4 Oak Grove vs. #5 Richland
3.) #2 Kindred vs. #7 FSHP
4.) #3 Northern Cass vs. #6 Enderlin

Friday, October 28th
5.) Loser Out Maple Valley vs. Richland
6.) Loser Out: FSHP vs. Enderlin
7) Central Cass vs. Oak Grove
8.) Kindred vs. Northern Cass

Monday, October 31st
9.) Region Qualifier: Richland vs. Northern Cass
10.) Region Qualifier: Enderlin vs. Oak Grove
11.) Championship: Central Cass vs. Kindred

#4 Oak Grove
#3 Northern Cass
#2 Kindred
#1 Central Cass

Both Central Cass and Kindred are vying for Region 1 berth to state tourney
By: Heath Hotzler, INFORUM

Fargo - Kindred and Central Cass are among the top teams in North Dakota Class B volleyball this season.
Each has more than 30 wins. Each plays in Region 1 and District 2.

That means at least one of the rival schools will not be making the trip to the Fargodome to participate in state tournament Nov. 17-19.

And that fact is not lost on the head coaches.

“That’s the sad part of it,” said first-year Central Cass coach Bridget Stowers. “It’s going to be a real heartbreaker for whoever doesn’t win in the end.”

“We are very focused on making sure we win the matches we need to early on to get another shot at Central Cass again,” added Kindred coach Brooks Dockter.

The Squirrels and Vikings each have skill, athleticism and experience.

Central Cass (36-2) has savvy players all over the court.

Outside hitter Courtney Dixon, an emotionally-charged three-year starter, is the glue. She drills the ball to the floor from any angle.

Junior middle hitter Hannah Breske is a tough competitor who shines in big matches. Sophomore middle blocker Faith Dooley is a 6-foot-2 game-changer.

“We really focus on the group, all of our team,” Stowers said. “Everyone needs to contribute for us to be successful. We have so many players that play well for us.”

The Squirrels also have the pedigree. Central Cass has advanced to state 12 times, including last year when they knocked off Kindred 3-0 in the region final.

Kindred (31-6) looks poised for a deep postseason run for the second-consecutive season. It’s been a remarkable turnaround for the Vikings under Dockter.

The team finished last in the district tournament five years ago.

Dockter said the players didn’t wilt. They committed themselves to getting stronger in the offseason so it didn’t happen again.

Junior middle hitter Kellie Schmit is a dynamic leader who recently eclipsed 1,000 kills.

Four seniors have been starters for four years, including standout setter Jacey Otterson. Otterson has more than 3,000 career assists.

“It’s sometimes hard to get kids who were once in last place to motivate themselves,” said Dockter, whose team scored tournament wins against Class A Fargo North and Fargo Shanley this season. “This group of seniors did it. They had a shot (at state) last year and this year they have a shot again.”

Central Cass is 2-1 against Kindred this season. The Squirrels defeated the Vikings 3-0 last week. But Central Cass isn’t taking anything for granted.

“Kindred kind of had an off night when we played them last time,” said Stowers. “Every time we play them it goes back-and-forth. It was a great confidence builder for us. But we know it will get a lot tougher.”

The District 2 tournament is scheduled to begin Thursday in Enderlin. The Region 1 tournament begins the following week at Fargo Oak Grove.

“We talk about playing to our potential,” said Dockter. “I think if we play to our potential, the result we want to happen will happen.”

Not watching both CCHS and Kindred play all of their games this year and reading that article in the paper it sounds to me like the Kindred coach is pretty confident his team will beat the Squirrels this time around?

Confused a bit here...shouldn't Dockter be confident Kindred can beat Central Cass? If not...why even play the game?

I would assume Stowers feels the same, that her kids have all the tools to win.

Agree with the confidence but to verbally come out to a reporter sounding the way the Kindred coach did seems little to "aggressive" maybe lets say? In the aticle is sounds like Casselton coach just was more professional about the interview.

From a coaches prospective why say something like that? You put pressure on your team and provide motivation to the other team. Also, last time I checked there are 14 other teams still in play in District 1&2.

...and Kindred struggled early against Oak Grove (Kindred battled back to win 3-1).

What exactly is the part that we have a problem with? This quote?

“We talk about playing to our potential,” said Dockter. “I think if we play to our potential, the result we want to happen will happen.”

That quote doesn't bother me. Central Cass is a better team. If we play to our potential, it doesn't matter what Kindred does. From what I've seen so far, Central Cass plays with confidence and doesn't get rattled easily. Remember, these are girls that have competed at the state level in many sports (basketball, track, volleyball) more than once. Kindred seems a bit one-dimensional, depending a lot on Kelli Schmit. Last week she struggled hitting through our blocks and had to start tipping. You can only do that so many times before we figure out how to dig those up.

Of course Kindred's coach thinks they can win. He wouldn't be a very good coach if he didn't.

And good luck to all district 1 and 2 teams... you never know what will happen at tourney time! That's why they play the games!

The article was well done and both coaches should show confidence, they have great teams. It is always interesting to see what a writer picks out of an interview with a coach.

There are 16 teams competing for the Region Title but I would be extremely surprised if the Squirrels or Vikings were not representing Region One. There really is not another team that will compete with these two power houses.

Kindred has every reason to be confident going into tournament play, and I'm sure the players appreciated their coach's support.

I just didn't think there was anything wrong with the comments.
Central Cass coach deflects because her team is the team to beat.
Kindred coach says earlier that they need to focus on their matches to get another shot at Central Cass...and then says if they play to their potential they think they can win.

I've watched alot of high school athletics over the years. Two great coaches for two great teams/programs.

I'm not shocked to see Kindred and Central Cass with 4 players...I am, however, shocked to see the #4 seed get 3 players while Northern Cass only has 2 players.

The 3 are all deserving...its just a little out of the ordinary to see the 4 seed get more than the 3 seed.

I actually think that Kindred and Central Cass deserve MORE than 4 players each, but that's not the way it works, I guess. And yes, I was surprised too that Oak Grove got 3 and NC only got 2.

Well there is one major name missing from Central Cass' list...but I would imagine she didn't play in many of the District games.
