Ryan was in first on Thursday, then lost to Rugby. They swept Rolla/Rollette today with both counting. They should be in 1st or 2nd now.

Rugby swept Surrey, got swept by Northstar and swept Bottineau on Saturday. Region record now 9-4 with 1 game left against Dunseith on Tuesday.

In the minot daily today

The victory means Bottineau hosts Ryan on Monday for the No. 1 seed in the Region 5 tournament, which plays its single-elimination round Friday at the higher seed.

While it would be tough for Bottineau to capture the top spot, the team most likely to benefit from a Lions loss Monday is North Star. The Bearcats would be the only team with three losses and would get the No. 1 seed, assuming it beats Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood-Glenburn on Monday.

If both North Star and Ryan lose, there would be a four-way tie for the No. 1 seed between Ryan, North Star, Rugby and Bottineau.

Ryan falls, North Star clinches No. 1

BOTTINEAU - Justin McCloud allowed one run on six hits over seven innings to lift Bottineau to a 2-1 victory over Bishop Ryan in Region 5 high school baseball play on Monday.

Ryan needed a win to clinch the No. 1 seed for the region tournament. However, with North Star's win over Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood-Glenburn and Ryan's loss, the Bearcats earn the No. 1 seed. If Rugby beats bottom-dwellar Dunseith today, the Panthers will clinch the No. 2 seed after owning the tiebreaker over Bottineau and Ryan.

Bishop Ryan will most likely be the No. 3 seed as it still holds the tiebreaker over Bottineau on run differential. Bottineau would then be the No. 4 seed with Surrey fifth.

Bottineau scored a run in the bottom of the first, but Ryan answered on an RBI single from Sheldon Marmon in the third. However, the Braves managed the winning run in the fifth.

Jay Mittleider got the runs he needed in the sixth and seventh innings to help the Lions win the nonconference nightcap 2-1.

The eight-team, single-elimination region tournament starts Friday at the higher seed. The remaining four teams will then play a four-team double elimination tournament Monday at Corbett Field
