I was looking back at previous state championships and it looks like Drayton and Hatton need to be thrown in the mix too.

Went through and here's the number of state championships each school has (if wrong let me know all change). Drayton had a great run in the late 50's early 60's but nothing since then. Hatton had nice run in early and late 70's but not much since then either. Minot Ryan, Thompson, and Cavalier have combined for the last 8 out of 9 state championships. I think there is plenty here to have a good debate. Also a Minot team won it in 1965 but not sure if they should be considered part of Minot Ryan. Another thing i see is 14 schools have more then 1 state championship and 14 have only 1 state championship.
Hatton 7 (1969, 70, 71, 77, 79, 82,88)
Drayton 6 (1958, 59, 60 61,62, 63)
Minot Ryan 4 (1998, 2000, 2001, 2007)
Thompson 4 (1983, 1985, 99, 2005)
Cavalier 3 ( 2002, 03, 04)
Velva 3 (1964, 84, 86)
Enderlin 3 (1950, 1990, 1997)
Hillsboro 2 (1967, 68)
Tolna 2 (1966, 75)
Minto 2 (1951, 1952)
Zeeland 2 (1973, 74)
Edmore 2 (1980, 81)
Munich/Starkweather 2 (1991, 92)
St Thomas/Valley 2 ( 1995, 96)
Hankinson 1 (1953)
Central cass 1 (1954)
Streeter 1 (1955)
Beulah 1(1956)
Wyndmere 1 (1957)
Dunseith 1 (1972)
Rolla 1 (1976)
Midway 1 (1978)
Lakota 1 (1987)
Bisbee England/ Cando 1 (1989)
Surrey 1 (1993)
Dakota Prairie 1 ( 1994)
SDNWTPR 1 (2006)
Minot 1 (1965)

Cavalier started high school baseball in 1996 I believe they lost to the eventual state champions (st thomas) in the region championship game after that they went on to win 8 straight region championships. (1997-2004)

Washburn went to that many state tournaments and never won a state championship?

Why should Steele be mentioned as one of the top all-time teams if Washburn dominated for so long weren't they in the same region all those years?

They've had some pretty good success recently, 4 trips to state in 6 years finishing 7th in 02, 2nd in 04, 1st in 06, and 4th in 07. Also they had some pretty good teams a while ago making quite a few trips to state and finishing 2nd in 1965 i think.

Also, they have several 2nd place finishes (this list could be incomplete though):
1975
1978
1980
1987

I'm not positive, but fairly certain they reached the state championship 9 times in a 14 year span, winning 6. They also had a 59 game winning streak between 1969-1972. (3 straight undefeated seasons, then lost on a last inning homerun in Regional Championship in 1972 to end the streak).

I'm pretty sure that for their first 3-4 state tournament appearances they kept placing higher and higher (and their first loss of their first 3-4 state tournaments were also to eventual state champions)

Well in 06 when they won it i believe it was 4 schools, Steele-Dawson, Napoleon, Wing, and then Tuttle Pettibone. As of now it is just 3 schools, Steele-Dawson, Napoleon, and Wing. With Tuttle Pettibone closing and most of the kids go to Steele-Dawson

First of all the only correct answer to this question is Thompson. Having won titles in the 80's, 90's and 00's. No one else has been consistantly dominant for the past 25 years like they have. 6 years here and 8 years there is not coparitive to that. A down year for them has been finishing second in the region. They have dominated a region that has great baseball tradition and has produced state champions over that same time span in high school and legion many times over. (Hatton, MPCG, CV, Hope/Page is a battle every year with lots of tradition) They ALWAYS have a target on their backs no matter who they play. They are the standard that everyone hopes to reach and everyone takes the most joy in beating because they feel they knocked off the best. All the others listed have some good tradition and some nice runs but they are not Thompson.

BTW- Those Drayton teams in the 50's 60's were not only the best class B teams in the state but were the best team in the state period basically dominating the class A towns those same years in Legion. THEY WERE GOOD!!!

Hey I would have to say Thompson or MPCG. Those two teams battled every year and in regionals it would almost always go into the 3rd game in the championship.

Tolna, has won three state championships in high school baseball, they won the state championship in 1966, 1975 and 1994 and placed second in 1984. Thats baseball tradition from a town of 200 people appearing in the state championship in four different decades. The 1994 team is listed as Dakota Prairie but it was all Tolna High school kids, the coop had not started yet but the school dist. was called Dakota Praire Tolna.
Tolna has also been to state in recent years under the Dakota Prairie coop name.

It's a shame when a town loses thier school how fast they lose their identity. Tolna has always been known for it's baseball and still should be. the other towns in the Dakota Prairie coop did not have much baseball tradition, Tolna brought it along.
