The bench press max is an over rated lift for football. It still seems to be the question to check a young man's manlyness but the lift has very little to do with how good of a football player you are.
The NFL puts very little stock in an athletes max bench press, they want to know how many reps of 225 lbs you can bench.
If I am a college coach I want to know how much a high school football player can power clean, that tells me much more about his explosiveness, coordination, and strength, than laying on your back and pushing up a balanced bar-bell , which is not much of a football move.
If you want to impress someone tell them you can squat 405 pounds six times and power clean 250 lbs four times. Or dead lift 500 pounds. Those are numbers that will make you a feared football player.
