9 man record?

The teams in 9 Man

Postby bballfan_05 » Thu Oct 04, 2007 3:44 am

Here is an article in Today's Bismarck Tribune, just wondering if anyone knows or has an idea of this may be a new record or not.

It takes most running backs - most of the good ones, that is - about a half a season to do what Evan Gross did in a single night last Friday in Ellendale.

The 160-pound junior tailback from Napoleon-Gackle-Streeter ripped the Ellendale defense to shreds, rushing for an astounding 466 yards and three touchdowns to lead the No. 1 Imperials to a 42-6 9-man Region 1 victory over the Cardinals.

Gross had a busy night, carrying 45 times. That was more than 70 percent of the Imperials' total plays.

"We were pretty one-dimensional that night," NGS coach Jon Schiele said. "The way Ellendale was playing defense, our passing game wasn't working and we couldn't get anything up the middle. So we sent Evan to the corners and that worked all night. He was picking up big chunks - 10, 20 yards - just about every time. If something works, you keep doing it until the other team stops it."

Gross's yardage total is eye-popping to say the least, but Schiele isn't sure if it's a school record.

"You would think it would have to be. ... I don't how far back our records go, but it's something that we should definitely look into," Schiele said. "It makes you wonder if anyone in the state ever got 400 (yards) in a game."

The 45 carries also might be a school record. In recent history, Jordan Dewald carried 43 times in the 9-man state championship game last season.

Gross has been a workhorse for the Imperials thus far. He averaged 23 carries before the Ellendale game. The extra work against the Cardinals didn't wear on him, according to Schiele.

"When it was all over, Evan told me that he felt better than he had all year," The NGS coach said. "He's in great shape. I believe he could have carried the ball even more."

It was the fifth straight time Gross rushed for more than 100 yards in a game. He has rushed for more than 200 yards three times.

For the season, Gross has gained 1,346 yards on 158 carries (an 8.5 average), and scored 10 touchdowns.

The Imperials improved to 6-0 overall with the victory and extended their winning streak to 17 games. They'll host Sargent Central on Friday and Strasburg-Zeeland on Oct. 12 to close out the regular-season.

Here are the official individual recorded national records for 9-man football.

So Gross would have the new national single game rushing record. If Napoleon documents it and reports it.

To whom do you record this and how do you go about it. Is there a site or a contact.

It's pretty obvious that only some of the teams turn in thier stats to be recorded as "records".

I agree and it's too bad, because there are some tremendous numbers out there for 9-man that have never been recorded.

I think we should get ndfootballguy on this so we at least have an official state record data base we can look to.

Dare I ask what a stud like Gross is doing getting 45 carries in a 42-6 blowout?????

Sounds a bit over the top to me.....

Thats a good point; last year I read an article where a team down south somewhere tried to set a national record for rushing against a neighboring town who was baaad, they went no huddle the whole game they broke the record, but the federation or whoever, did not recognize it because of the deliberate attempt against a poor team.

I was at the game and here is what I saw. In no way did it seem to be deliberate. First the defense was stacked heavy inside the ends, all gaps were filled with tackles and behind them were 2 to 3 LBs on every play, darn near impossible to run a fullback with any efficience or success. Hense gross getting his carries to the outside edges. Second once he did get by the line there was daylight and many runs became 12-20 yard gains. Another influence was that there was a 30 mile an hour wind blowing straight down the field which made it tough to pass and also allowed ellendale to pin napoleon down inside the 5 on 3 occasions making for three very long drives. You will see that gross did score one touchdown in the 4th but that was the last play of a drive that continued into the fourth quarter and ended on the first play in the 4th quarter, so this was done primarily over 3 quarters. Also, he had no backup that night, he was injured.

So to sum it up, I don't feel it was intentional.  you take a look back at napoleons history and they are a run dominated team,  50 plus carries a game is not unusual it just happened this time that it was one player, due to circimstances getting the carries. Look back at the championship game, granted that was 4 quarters and playing a better team, their tailback had 43 carries. I think it just turned out that way and he along with his offensive line had a very good night.

Also, look at other box scores, Other players such as Gion and Kosel are playing and carrying the ball when scores are similar.

In another game on Friday, if Brock Gion would have rushed 45 times he would have rushed for 1310 yds and almost 17 touchdowns for Mott/Regent, but was pulled early.  Instead  -
Running back Brock Gion carried eight times for 233 yards and three TDs in Mott-Regent's 58-0 win over Wilton-Wing last Friday.

I'm not being critical of Gross at all. He's a heckuva player. But it sounds like Napoleon had the game well in hand and Gross is still carrying the ball into the 4th quarter.

Questionable, that's all I'm saying. I wonder how Ellendale felt.....

i'm guessing they felt pretty good...apparnetly napoleon didn't feel like they could get away with putting in their scrubs and could only move the ball with one player. considering ellendale won what...one game last year, that is moving your program in the right direction, even if final stats/score doen't immediately show that. schiele even said it in his quotes, napoleon was one-dimentional.

I think there are quite a few teams who pull their starters at halftime with that kind of lead. You don't need any Booby Miles injuries.

Well a few weeks ago I did bring up the fact that Napolean leaves their starters in for no reason, and most people here denied that it was true.

Huh..........................

it is possible that they don't have many kids to fill in for them or those kids just aren't very good.  it could also be possible they don't want a repeat of what happened last year when they played shiloh.  they were blowing them out and put the backups in at halftime then ended up having to put the starters back in later on.  thats never any good either.

When did Napoleon play shiloh?  I thought they were on a JV schedule last year?

I agree about Shiloh - I also thought they played JV last year.

I checked out Ellendale's other scores - they are capable of putting points on the board. They have 3 wins by 30+ points. But still, it's pretty obvious to me that Ellendale wasn't going to score 30 on Napoleon when they only score 6 the whole game.

So I still have a hard time with the stud running back getting 45 carries when you are up by 4, 5, or 6 touchdowns in the second half. Seriously, put yourself on the Ellendale sideline. You are down 30-something to nothing or maybe 6, and the stud scores a touchdown in the 4th quarter on his 45th carry. I think I'd be a little upset, don't you?

to me it seems as if js2125 is none other than jon schiele himself...he knew an awful lot about the game.  If it is i think that its terrible that a coach would come on here and try to make it known that his player broke a record.  just my opinion!

I don't think that is is so terrible, but I think the record would mean more if it were a tighter game.

I sounds like Napoleon was frustrated that Ellendale took away the inside game and wanted to make a point by running outside and getting the big yards.

From a coaches standpoint, you do run plays that have been working, until you get stopped. How do we know that all of these plays vs Ellendale were tosses or powers intended to go outside? Maybe the play was intended to go up the middle, and he got bumped outside. It happens....... 466 yards is still 466 yards. Good for the kid, it's quite an accomplishment, no matter who you play.
As far as putting someone in for him, I understand that his backup was injured, do you make someone into a running back in 2 seconds. And put that kid in danger? I don't think so. Do you pass? Most people don't pass when you are up by that much.
People should maybe just be happy for the kid, and move on.
