Some interesting games this week to close out the regular season.  We could see some shootouts OR will the defenses step up?

Region 1 - Edgeley-Kulm (38.6 ppg) at Oakes (33.7 ppg)

Region 2 - Hankinson (34.9 ppg) at Hillsboro (34.4 ppg)

Region 3 - Lakota (51.9 ppg) vs. North Border (40.9 ppg)   (in Grand Forks)

Region 4 - St. John (51.9 ppg) at Towner-Granville-Upham (41.4 ppg)

Region 5 - Williams County (43.0 ppg) at Divide County (44.3 ppg)

Region 6 - Hettinger (33.1 ppg) at Mott-Regent (47.7 ppg)

Usually when you get matchups like these - and there are some GOOD ones this week - the scoring drops a little bit because of the quality of the matchups. But not always....

Just for fun, here's my take on which games will be over/under their offensive averages:

Region 1 - Edgeley-Kulm (38.6 ppg) at Oakes (33.7 ppg) 72.3ppg (total) - Over - EK's going to put a ton of points up; Oakes better score a lot to keep pace

Region 2 - Hankinson (34.9 ppg) at Hillsboro (34.4 ppg) 69.3 - Under - defense will show in this one

Region 3 - Lakota (51.9 ppg) vs. North Border (40.9 ppg)   (in Grand Forks) 92.8 - Over - these really are two high-flying offenses

Region 4 - St. John (51.9 ppg) at Towner-Granville-Upham (41.4 ppg) 93.3 - Under - St. John has gotta be pooped after scoring 84 Friday ;)

Region 5 - Williams County (43.0 ppg) at Divide County (44.3 ppg) 87.3 - Under - this one's gonna be an ol' fashioned slobberknocker

Region 6 - Hettinger (33.1 ppg) at Mott-Regent (47.7 ppg) 80.8 - Over - I think this will be a game where Gion runs wild

What do you folks think?

Region 1 - Edgeley-Kulm (38.6 ppg) at Oakes (33.7 ppg) 72.3ppg (total) - Under - Edgeley-Kulm will put up some points but Oakes will have trouble scoring to go over the total

Region 2 - Hankinson (34.9 ppg) at Hillsboro (34.4 ppg) 69.3 - Under - I agree with Hinsa on this one and believe that both defenses will show up in this game

Region 3 - Lakota (51.9 ppg) vs. North Border (40.9 ppg)   (in Grand Forks) 92.8 - Under - Both teams have extremely talented offenses, but i believe one of the two teams' defenses will make some key stops to keep it under 92.8.

Region 4 - St. John (51.9 ppg) at Towner-Granville-Upham (41.4 ppg) 93.3 - Under - Is St. John's for real or what here?  84 points is rediculous...however i believe that is stays under the total.

Region 5 - Williams County (43.0 ppg) at Divide County (44.3 ppg) 87.3 - Under - Big rivalry game with the Region 5 crown up for grabs.  I'm saying under because Divide doesn't give up many points at all and i'm not sure how ellison is doing after the concussion he suffered against Glenburn.

Region 6 - Hettinger (33.1 ppg) at Mott-Regent (47.7 ppg) 80.8 - Under - I believe Mott-Regent will put up there normal average, but looking at Hettinger, they have scored a combined total of 12 points in there 2 losses this year.  I also agree with Hinsa, Gion should run wild again

Thanks for the correction.  It does bring me to another question though that I've been wondering all year .... Why is it Finley-Sharon-Hope-Page and not Hope-Page-Finley-Sharon?  Obviously not a big deal, just curious.  Hope-Page has been around for a long time ... why aren't they listed first?  When Powers Lake joined up with Stanley , it's not Powers Lake-Stanley.  Or when Velva did a co-op with Sawyer years ago (no longer) it wasn't Sawyer-Velva.  Was it a coin toss?  Or ???

the two schools have been combined in baseball for a while, and i'm very sure, but not positive, that they were the hope-finley wolverines (the old hope-page mascot)

Yep, that's true.  From what I've heard from people involved with the decision making process, it was drawn out of a hat to be fair to both schools after the coop had been decided upon.

That will be the big advantage for a small group of teams in the playoffs.  Look at the list of teams that are scoring 50 but giving up 40 - you probably won't hear any noise from those teams in the playoffs.  St. John can score 100 per game against most teams, but they won't against Mott, CM, Divide or Williams and that will be the difference maker.  It's a four horse race out west...

A four horse race out west? Last time I checked Richardton-Taylor lost 14-8 to Central McLean and 20-14 to Mott-Regent, which is both of those teams' closest game.
I'd say it's a five-team race. R-T isn't that bad.

Don't count out St. John too early.  You're right that their defense needs to step it up in the playoffs.  But that being said ... offensively St. John has as many weapons as the Top 5 teams in the state.

I've had a chance this year to see Napoleon-Gackle-Streeter, Divide County, Edgeley-Kulm, and Williams County play and seriously, none of those teams have more threats on the offensive side of the ball than St. John.  They might have as many, but not more.  St. John trailed TGU last night by 18 points near the end of the 2nd quarter and they didn't panic.  They came back and scored the next 28 points in a row and ended up winning 64-54.  There was over 1,000 yards of combined total offense in the game.  Remember the name Cobretti Parisien.  Starting QB for the St. John Woodchucks.  He's been overlooked I think. Again, just one guy's opinion.

I agree, on the offensive side of the ball St John is unbelieveable.  Parisien is great QB that hasn't got any hype this year.  Maybe because St John hasn't had a good team in a while....maybe because not many have seen them play.....or maybe because people think they come from a weak region (which is somewhat true) and came out as a surprise team at #1.  They should be mentioned as one of the top teams in the state since there are not many undefeateds left and that is an accomplishment in itself.  However, I don't see how a team can make a run in the playoffs giving up so many points.  NCB has an excellent defense and held SJ to 14 pts.  I can't see St John holding any of the top 3 teams in the western regions below 14.  NCB held TGU to 6 and St John let them score 54.  There are not many shootouts after the 1st round of the playoffs.  Defense wins and SJ needs to step that up ASAP to win a playoff game.

You're right, North Central Benson did hold TGU to 6 points ...  BUT, TGU was without their starting quarterback that game, junior Mitchell Smette.  Freshman Tyler Thorson played QB that game.  Thorson is a great athlete but TGU, no doubt, missed Smette not in the lineup due to injury.  Smette has also put up some nice numbers this year,  I believe I heard : 10 passing TD's and 5 rushing TD's.

Still, I don't think Smette makes up 48 pts....

We will see how good St. John really is in the playoffs. I personally don't think they will have a whole lot of success.
