The Shrine Temples (Kem in Grand Forks and El Zagal in Fargo) extend nearly to Bemidji in the north and to Detroit Lakes in the South. Minnesota players were first added to the rosters in 2006 in order to include Shriners who live in these areas in the fundraising efforts. Adding Minnesota players does not mean fewer players from North Dakota, roster sizes were increased to add the players, which in turn adds considerably to funds for the mission of the Shrine Hospitals, which provide free medical care for burned and crippled children.
