I believe it is a couple days after the state title games.
The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.

Seniors Kordel Wolfe (running back) and Bob Bartz (lineman) made the first-team offense for the second straight season, while senior Michael Leier was chosen as a first-team linebacker for the second time.

"It's a good feeling and a great honor," Bartz said. "It takes a lot of hard work to be chosen as one of the best players in the state. You can't just be good, everyone on this list had to work hard. The offseason work, the hard practices, it shows it all paid off in the end."

Harvey senior Cody Olson (lineman) and junior Casey Weinmann (defensive back) made first-team defense, while senior Jacob Goldade was on the second-team offense and senior Sam Preble the second-team defense.

State semifinalist Velva had three members on the first team and three on the second team. Senior Kyle Kuntz was chosen as a first-team receiver, junior Wakely Pister a first-team lineman and senior Josh Weidler a first-team linebacker. It is Weidler's second time as a first-team linebacker.

Velva seniors Troy Jesperson and Tyler Ystaas made second-team offense and senior Zac Peterson second-team defense.

"It's quite an honor. You are right up there with a lot of great football players in the state of North Dakota," Weidler said. "There's six of us but I know there are a couple others that could've been on the list too.

"Us guys from Velva, we take great pride in Velva football. When it comes to the preseason or the fall we're going hard. All-state is one thing, but we are focusing on one thing and that's the championship. I know we came up short, but I was proud of how the guys played."

Also earning first-team honors were Stanley-Powers Lake's Chase Enget (receiver) and North Prairie's Nic Pfeifer (offensive lineman) and Jayde Wuori (defensive back).

Other second-team honors went to North Prairie's Michael Bonn (offense) and Blake Nelson (defense) and Stanley-Powers Lake's Chris Nordloef (defense).

The Harvey Hornets repeated as Class A state champions this season.

All four of its returning all-state players also repeated.

Running back Kordel Wolfe, offensive lineman Bob Bartz, linebacker Michael Leier and defensive lineman Cody Olson garnered Class A all-state honors for the second year in a row as the Hornets topped the 2008 list with five first-team selections.

Wolfe, Bartz and Leier also made the first team last season. Olson was a second-team selection in 2007.

Defensive back Casey Weinmann joined his Harvey teammates on the first team.

Other repeat first-teamers are quarterback Justin Purintun of state runner-up Linton-HMB, running back Brandon Schell of Lisbon, and linebacker Josh Weidler of Velva.

Wolfe will leave Harvey High School with 4,443 career rushing yards. This season, the 193-pound senior back carried 249 times for 1,942 yards and 25 touchdowns. He also caught nine passes for 149 yards and a score, and tallied a team-high 162 points.

Wolfe rushed for 1,853 yards and 14 touchdowns last season.

"Kordel epitomized what Harvey football is all about - tough and physical," Harvey coach Brad Sandy said. "He was our horse - a strong, durable kid who punished kids when he hit them. And what a clutch player he was in the playoffs. He had over 200 yards in each of our first three playoff games, and over 100 in the championship game."

Bartz, a 235-pound senior tackle, anchored solid offensive lines for three seasons.

"Anybody who scouted us knew that if we needed a big yard, we were going to run Bob's way," Sandy said. "We picked up a lot of yards and scored a lot of points over the last three years, and he was a big reason why."

Leier, a 195-pound senior, recorded 69 tackles this season - 37 solo.

"Michael played our strong side, and he played it well," Sandy said. "He's a smart player - a student of the game. And when he hit people, they knew they got hit."

Olson, a 5-foot-9, 230-pound senior tackle, had 72 stops - 29 solo - and 31/2 quarterback sacks.

"If Cody were three or four inches taller, he would be getting recruited by some big schools," Sandy said. "He's a very strong and determined kid, and quite the technician."

Weinmann, a 187-pound defensive back, made 70 tackles (38 solo) and intercepted a team-high five passes.

"Casey was probably the hardest hitter on the team," Sandy said. "He's fun to watch because he plays the game the way it's supposed to be played. Just a tough, tough kid."

Leier, Olson and Weinmann helped the Hornets shut out 10 opponents this season - including the last eight.

Purintun, a senior, concluded a record-setting career with Linton-HMB. A three-year starter, the 200-pound Purintun set 10 school records, including career marks for most completions (258), passing attempts (485) and passing yards (4,532). He threw 42 touchdown passes and 27 interceptions.

This season, Purintun completed 84 of 171 passes for 1,385 yards, 12 touchdowns and only six interceptions. He also rushed for 387 yards and seven scores.

Purintun compiled a 28-7 record as a starter and led the Lions to two appearances in the Dakota Bowl.

"Justin set a lot of records here, and he helped us win a lot of games, but the big thing we're really going to miss is his leadership," Linton-HMB coach Dan Imdieke said. "He was like another coach on the field."

Linton-HMB had two other first-team picks - linebacker Drew Moch and offensive lineman Jamie Sathren.

Moch, a 180-pound Hazelton-Moffit-Braddock senior, led the Lions in defensive points, and was the team's "sparkplug," according to Imdieke.

"Drew plays the game the way it should be played," the Linton-HMB coach said. "He's a no-holds-barred kind of a kid. He's all over the field, and he's a heck of a hitter."

Sathren, a 220-pound senior, was the Lions' center for the past two seasons.

"Jamie was a very solid, very consistent player," Imdieke said. "We could always count on him to handle the nose guards one-on-one. He didn't need much help."

New Salem-Glen Ullin running back Nate Seeger earned first-team all-state honors after rushing for 1,185 yards and 10 touchdowns on 223 carries. The 165-pound junior had a string of seven consecutive 100-yard games while leading the 7-3 Holsteins to the state quarterfinals.

"Nate became our workhorse this year and did an outstanding job," New Salem-GU coach Steve Kleinjan said. "He's a hard-nosed, tough runner who is very deserving of all-state."

Offensive lineman Nate Doll and linebacker Jarad Wolf also made the first team for the Holsteins.

Doll, a 6-foot-3, 240-pound senior tackle, was the anchor of the New Salem-GU offensive line.

"We ran a lot of our offense behind Nate, and we had a pretty good year running the ball," Kleinjan said. "He did a solid job for us."

Wolf, a 200-pound junior, led the Holsteins with 65 tackles and four interceptions.

"Jarad was the quarterback of our defense," Kleinjan said. "He's a very good all-around linebacker. He loves the game and he plays it hard."

Killdeer put 230-pound senior defensive tackle Tanner Olson on the first team.

"Tanner is a big, strong kid who really came on for us this year," Killdeer coach Chuck Wagner said. "He was a good run-stopper and pass-rusher. He worked extremely hard, and played with a tremendous amount of heart."
