Best Player(s) to Come Out of ND since 2000

I know the CHS_WHS topic is basically becoming this topic, but why not discuss it in it's own area.

D. Irmen, Grant or Ryan Potulny? Will Marto play in the show? I guess I am not sure. R. Potulny, last I checked has a regular shift.

It is pretty cool it took a N.D. kid to lead the goofers to at least one maybe two NCAA titles, not sure off the top of my head. Not sure when Grant graduated from H.S., possibly before 2000.

Hey if we're talking N.D. Dustin Penner played for the Jacks and now makes 4 or so million a year. Think he would be in the NHL if he grew up south of the 49th?

Penner had an interesting an unlikely road to the NHL, playing high school in canada as a senior instead of playing juniors is like playing JV as a senior in ND/MN from what ive heard. almost didnt even play at bottineau, a buddy called him last second. broke his femur first year there too. shows what happens when kids dont give up. Looking at things like this, he maybe couldve made it to where he is out of ND/MN.

I had no idea about Penner's story, thanks for that. As for the best players since 2000 to come from ND:

- Jake Marto
- Paul Weisgarber
- Lamoureux kids (although their time in HS was limited)
- Nate Ziegelmann (beast of a goalie for RR back in the day...reminded me of Hasek..probably because of the helmet...He might've been 90's)
- Jarvis Wiest (great goalie for Jamestown...could've been a great goalie if he had played after HS)
- Jordan McIntyre (GFC Mr. Hockey '04?)
- Paul/Thomas Campbell (Dangerous GPR duo)

I can't pick one...

Yep, I am from Jamestown and there have been a lot of good goalies come out of here but Jarvis Wiest was by far the most exciting to watch. I think he graduated in '03 and he started as a freshman. The Blue Jays actually had decent teams...teams that competed with the top teams in the East and Jarvis was a big part of that. His stats were outstanding...I think he had a save percentage above .91 every year except 1..maybe 2... and then it must've been close then too. If you ever got a chance to watch the kid live, you would know what I am talking about. During his tenure we beat Fargo South, tied Grafton-PR, came close with a couple of one-goal games with the GF teams. (There were other upsets that were basically just him standing on his head).

Google news search from 98-04 for Jarvis Wiest....too bad you have to purchase these to get a look...

Maybe we should vote? I would set it up but don't know how. I think R. Potulny. I believe he would have had a nice chance at the Hobey if he would have continued. Marto is good but has not proved worthy of this crown.

Ya he was Mr. Hockey and plays for the sioux. Will he get a regular shift in the NHL? I don't think he will. My vote goes with Ryan Potulny. He gets a regular shift in the show, lit up ND high school hockey and left early, lit up the USHL, and lit it up for the gophers.

I didn't mean Marto was unworthy of this crown, I meant not as worthy as Potulny currently is. Maybe Marto will be some day, I have my doubts however. Would you pick Marto over Grant Potulny too? Has he lead the Sioux to a national championship? How about two?

true but they play two different positions so that is hard to compare them like that...Potulny is also older so that is another tough comparison. I doubt if Marto will make it to the NHL because he isn't big enough to be an NHL defenseman.

Nate Speidel was a successful goaltenderr back in the the early 2000's for hazen-beulah. He was the number 1 and 2 goaltender in the state for his whole high school career as well as all west region and all state his whole high school career. After Graduating he went on to play for the bobcats and St Johns university. He now holds a successful camp that he has been running for 6 years. He is currently coaching for century.
