Best 9-man players from small town ND

Postby Nodak Guy » Thu Sep 27, 2007 12:44 pm

Who are the best of the best?  What about back in the powerhouse days of Underwood, Turtle Lake, Maddock, and Wyndmere?  I'm thinking mid to late 80's at the moment.

 Bill Stanley, 1982 Sherwood Wildcats.

One of those great players I remember from when I was a kid.

Maddock had had some very good fball players in the past 20 years.  Not sure of a lot of their names, tho.  Esmond had a ton of great fball players in the 70-80's too before they cooped with Maddock, so I don't know if some of the Maddock players were from Esmond or not.  One of the best I've seen play is Jason Haagenson from Leeds.....played for NCB in the early 90's.  Great athlete who led NCB to the semis his Jr year but then got upset early in the playoffs his senior year.   Went on to a good fball career at Jamestown after HS.

Just a few that went on to play some college ball was Goven of Turtle Lake- (UND) in the mid to late 90's....he was a STUD

David Wistoff from Burke Central also went on to play at UND in the late 90's

The Belquist brothers from New Rockford were pure athletes.

If I remember right the Bosse boys of Sargent Central were pretty good back in the early to mid 90's

My grandparents are from Esmond, and I used to hear a lot things about Esmond having a bunch of studs back in 80's....

dude Lavin from Hatton put up some unreal numbers in 1987.

1,500+ rushing yards, 3,355 all-purpose yards,  & 27 TDs in 9 games.

He was also a finalist for Mr. Basketball, state qualifier in track, and a key player on High School & Legion Baseball State Champion teams.

I think Brent Hyschlin (spelling is way off) from Sawyer-Surrey threw for something like 2,300 yards in 94.  And Burke County had a running back ('95) that ran for a ton of yards.

he only started his senior year and they were 11-man his senior year... and if you mention a running back from lamoure i think darren thielges would be more deserving considering he was all state his junior and senior year on a 9-man team.

Jesse Wolf from Towner-Granville-Upham was a tough 9-man player in the early to mid 90's.

In the late 80's and early 90's Esmond-Maddock had the Gilbertson brothers (Matt & Tom) I believe 1 of them was an H.M. All American.  They also had the Kallenbach brothers, Brad and Mikel.  Mikel Kallenbach went on to start for NDSU for 4 years at free safety.

Wasn't Robert Gilberstson a brother to Matt and Tom?  And I think all of those guys mentioned were cousins.

Matt, Tom, and Rob are all brothers. Tom was the high school all american at running back.

All three played football at VCSU.  Matt at linebacker, Tom at running back and Rob at wide receiver.

The esmond guys,  Todd Hoffner, Darrin Leier, Paul Leier, There were several more hard nose football players from esmond but these guys I know went on to have good college careers.

How about the Dykema boys from Strasburg. I heard their defense against some teams used to have those two on one side of the ball and the other 7 on the other side - and teams still ran away from the side those two were on. Could be a hyped up rumor - but I heard that from a coach that saw them play. Any truth to this?

Whoa - Point/Center - I'll have to let Dash know the next time I see him, that you think he is a legend - I'm sure he'll appreciate it with the typical modesty that he has..LOL

I know Esmond had another running back by the name of Rodney Bachmiere.  Iam not exact on the stats but he had some where around 27 touchdowns and 2000 rushing yards.  He was a high school all-american for sure though.

About what years did he play?

Do they still have high school all-americans?  You hear about people from ND being named to that back in the 70s and 80s, but not now.

Last I heard - but I haven't seen him or heard from him in awhile. But you got me curious to look him up and say hi.

He manages a beauty salon and clothing store in West Fargo - I don't think we can mention names of businesses on this site - otherwise I would tell you, but that is where he's at.
