North Dakota Census Estimates

The latest census estimates were just released so I thought I would post estimates for ND's 20 largest cities and towns. Overall, I wasn't too surprised by some of the estimates. West Fargo continues to grow at a very healthy rate. I'm surprised to see Jamestown, Devils Lake, Wahpeton, and Valley City still declining so fast. I also thought Grafton would have a larger population or at least a stable population and it more than likely does due to its Hispanic population. Hopefully some of these towns as well as others throughout the rest of the state can do something to stop the population loss.

Rank. City - Estimate (2000 Census)
01. Fargo - 95,556 (90,599)
02. Bismarck - 61,217 (55,532)
03. Grand Forks - 51,216 (49,321)
04. Minot - 36,256 (36,567)
05. West Fargo - 24,313 (14,940)
06. Mandan - 18,274 (16,718)
07. Dickinson - 16,265 (16,010)
08. Jamestown - 14,687 (15,527)
09. Williston - 13,014 (12,512)
10. Wahpeton - 7,418 (8,586)
11. Devils Lake - 6,711 (7,222)
12. Valley City - 6,286 (6,826)
13. Grafton - 3,954 (4,516)
14. Beulah - 2,891 (3,152)
15. Lincoln - 2,876 (1,730)
16. Rugby - 2,510 (2,939)
17. Hazen - 2,200 (2,457)
18. Lisbon - 2,121 (2,292)
19. Horace - 2,078 (915)
20. Bottineau - 2,046 (2,336)

Do you have a link? I'm surprised Cassleton isn't on there.

I'm a little surprised to see Horace up there. I guess it's a similar situation to Lincoln. I just thought Harwood got more people than Horace.

Horace is like West Fargo...its just growing like crazy. I don't think Harwood has grown all that much...at least not as of late.

Sorry Flip. I meant to add the link too. Just go to the state you're interested in and choose the document type.

Casselton is 2,044 so its #21

The difference between #20 Bottineau and #21 Casselton is that Casselton is growing whereas Bottineau is declining.

I was amazed at Kindred's numbers. I know it's not a big town, but where do all the kids come from? There are around 615 people in the town and about 215 of them are in high school?

Kindred has a large school district...there are a lot of country kids that are from the Oxbow/Hickson, Wild Rice, Horace, Walcott, Leonard, and Davenport areas. Therefore as you can see they draw from a larger area; not just the town itself.

Thanks for the link, did you make that list of the largest cities yourself or is there some other link?

Its real easy to sort the list (largest to smallest) if you open the Excel document.

I'm surprised you don't see more growth from oil. In the papers you read all the time how these towns out west are growing too fast, but it doesn't show up on the census numbers. I noticed the estimates on there are from July 1, 2009....has there been that much growth just in the last year then?

There is a big housing crisis where workers have to live in hotels and other temporary housing so I don't know if they are counted in the census. But I am surprised with Minot's numbers.

I live in Horace, so I can believe those numbers, and it's quite sad. The amount of people actually physically moving to Horace isn't all that large, it's the rural population. Fargo has tried to annex a bunch of land around the Horace area to spread. Horace has not accepted, and asked the area farmers if they would rather be in Horace or Fargo, and due to high property taxes in Fargo, most opted to be in Horace, and hence the double in population in 10 years.
