Best Overall High School Event

This has probably been posted before but let’s put the cards on the table and make some arguments for the best North Dakota High School Event. Most likely it is going to be a state tourney of some kind. Remember it's just opinions, so let's be mature and just argue for your pick. For me it's the State Track Meet. You get to see all of the best from both classes, there are always kids pushing to break records, the kids have to compete in an uncontrolled environment which makes the better athlete come out ahead I believe, it's easy to compare performances between A and B since they run events in order and under the same conditions, and in my plain and simple opinion: track athletes are the best, most well rounded athletes. Any others?

State B Basketball...the class A tournament is no match. It's always the same teams and the boys and girls are together. It's the equivalent of two class B districts and then moving on to regionals. which would be state. and then when the last 2 class A teams reach the State Champ game, they have already played each other 700 times that season. in class B, alot of the teams have never played against each other and its a true state championship not just Fargo/GF vs. the rest of the state

It shows you have never been to the Civic Center during a WDA. This year, every day they had to pull the curtains back for people to have a seat to watch the games. It was exciting from the first to last game on each day. I don't know the attendance record for each day so forgive me but someone may have them.

I was in the Region 6 tourney last night and the four teams there did not pack out the Minot Aud. I know it seats about 5,000 - 6,000 people. I know the crowd was excited but the wins were wins. And I know class "B" doesn't play much out of their regions during regular season.

So you say class "B" plays 3 more games then class "A", so what I propose is we do way with districts and go with just regions. Then you can play tha same amount as class "A" and end all this talk about how class "B" and "A" teams are better then each other. Neither is better then the other.

Basketball is just that, basketball, hate to bust alot of bubbles. Class "A" and Class "B" has good team and bad ones. So lets cheer on the regions and state tourneys as the teams advance, whether you love'em of hate'em.

I'd say the Dakota Bowl. I'd like to see what would happen if the Dakota Bowl were played in an indoor stadium that is centrally located. The Dakota Bowl has one distinction over basketball: Most of the time, you can see the finals brewing in the first few weeks of the season.

For example: This year, we had a combination of the best that sports has to offer.

Hillsboro vs. Williams County=a game between two teams that everyone knew could be there, but weren't locks, alot like the B state tourney.

Harvey vs. Linton=Similar circumstances. Two teams that had to fight through great teams to advance.

Watford City vs. Valley City=One team that dominated the regular season vs. a team that came through a mess, then won the whole thing.

Fargo South vs. Bismarck High=Did anyone think the finals would be any different from the beginning of the season?

Football gives us that march through the season that explodes at the finals. If this event were in Bismarck, I think the attendance figures would surpass B basketball.

well when 4 of the teams playing at the civic center are from the city it is being held in then of course the attendance will be higher. not to mention the school sizes.

but forgetting that. the point being made was about which event is better.

The Boys State Class B Tournament is the premier event in ND. A lot of people go to get their final fix of ND high school basketball. Also, there aren't any conflicts with any other high school ball tournaments. There are always new teams playing in the tournament, and entire communities (and surrounding communities) show up.

Class B basketball by far...there is just so much energy when it comes to it...when the whole town is there its pretty amazing...especially when the reallly small schools make it

Class A basketball is getting better though if they would seperate the tournies the crowd would be much better in my opinion

It probably isn't quite on the same level as the bball tourneys...but....the state track meet is pretty cool. You get to see alot of the best athletes from different sports compete in a different way. Class B, A, some great performances each year.

I have to agree with pushthrough 13, state track is a pretty special event. I have been there only a couple of times, but I always had a blast. To me, if the weather is nice probably the best sporting event in North Dakota.

State track attracts between 8,000-10,000 people each day (according to Bismarck Community Bowl Manager Mike Wald). This event probably has to be one of the most energetic, exciting events in the state.

I would have to rank them in this order in the State of ND:

1. State Track
2. Class B State Basketball
3. State Hockey
4. State Football

In the State of MN its a little different:

1. State Hockey
2. State Basketball
3. State Football
4. State Track

State Track isn't even televised. Along with the people physically at the games for basketball and football you have to factor in the amount of people watching on tv.

For me it has to be State Track followed by B state basketball. State track is something everyone should witness for themselves atleast once.

Being on TV doesn't mean a thing!! There are at least five thousand people out at the State Track meet in Bismarck each day which is probably the BEST complex to host it at. If you have never experienced the thrill of being at a State Track meet...you should do so sometime soon.

GREAT EXPERIENCE + GREAT VENUE + GREAT FUN = BEST OVERALL HIGH SCHOOL EVENT!!

I do not wish to belittle track and field and the athletes who compete at all.

I do question the number of spectators at the event. One said 8-10,000 per day. Another said at least a thousand. Ummm...quite a discrepancy. I cannot believe there are anywhere close to 8000 spectators at the state track meet. And I can't say the action is riveting all day. You have a few races that get everyone's attention once in a while, but for the most part the spectators are sitting on their hands, reading, listening to music, napping, etc.

State B basketball is the event that keeps people on the edge of their seats and gets even casual fans to sit up and take notice.

As far as atmosphere, I've found few sports can compare to wrestling. It's just intense.

State Class B is by far the best overall high school event, and the reason why it attracts people from 6 yrs old to 90 years old watching it at home or in the Pup's, Cafe's, Business Establishments all across North Dakota, even the MN side of the river follows it, its at the perfect time of the year to attract all spectators available, I have been to all of them and the "B" is the ticket to get. Although for some reason its not the same in the Fargo Dome as it is in Minot or Bismarck.

So a sport has to be televised to be considered the best? Give me a break.
Many people have said that Class B basketball is better, when others say Class A. It depends on how you look at it. Class A will draw more fans, and naturally have a more electric atmosphere, but Class B fans are way more dedicated and, in my opinion, just plain better fans. It comes with the small school setting. If you put the same number of Class B fans as Class A in an arena, I gurantee Class B would be more energetic.
That being said, I think the Class B basketball tourney would be better.
But wait, there's more.
Put the Class A and Class B together, along with boys and girls, and what do you get? State Track and Field. That's right..............The Best Overall High School Event.

Class A bball does not draw more fans and the atmosphere is terrible when you compare it to Class B bball.
