I sat down with a family friend over the weekend and we talked about some of the high points of the NE-R athletic co-ops and the implications for the community.  I think that I truly beneifited by having those Regent guys on the team.  I had almost forgotten that we had a basketball co-op that yielded a state tourney birth(well after my time).  WE talked about the fans spending time in each others towns and attending fund raisers and just doing business with and for each other.  Also noted the abrupt end to that when Regent opted to consolidate with Mott.  Things certainly have changed in small town ND.  Unfortunately that trend doesn't appear to be ending anytime soon.

i gotta say the Steele-Dawson coops with Tuttle wing and robinson.  The first season the girls come over for basketball they win the region and go to state.  since the baseball teams have co-op theyve been to state 3 times winning 1.  not bad since it this co-op hasnt been around that long.

Were those towns ever major rivals in sports?

If so was it more a parent/adult issue or a student/athlete issue.  I mean in terms of getting the co-op started.

not major rivals, it started when the WTPR girls couldnt field enough girls for a team (for some reason Wing is trying to start their own team now i dunno y).  same goes for baseball, the kids from tuttle wing pettibone and robinson wanted to play baseball but not enought wanted to play to fill a team.

Tioga-Ray (Williams Co) in football.  Both of these schools had poor football programs...put them together and they've made the playoffs every year, including back-to-back semifinal runs.

Then you watch the two schools compete in volleyball and they're out for blood. Funny how that works.

Pingree Buchanan were rivals with Kensal, back in the 80's before they started the coop in 1990.

Yes, Sawyer co-op with Minot Ryan in Track and Football, I think that might be it, but I'm not sure though.

New England cooped with Dt in football this last year and it went well for them making the state championship game and had some big impact from the players who came from NE....DT also decided recently that they will be cooping with NE in boys/girls track and boys golf
