The University of Mary is getting a step closer to hiring a men’s basketball coach.

After sifting through about 100 applicants, U-Mary is bringing three finalists to campus this week. Those coming to campus are: Nebraska-Omaha assistant Randall Herbst, who also has a connection to the University of North Dakota; former Wisconsin-Green Bay head coach Mike Heideman; Parshall native and Peninsula College head coach Pete Stewart.

Herbst will visit U-Mary today, Heideman Thursday and Stewart on Friday.

The position became open after Juno Pintar stepped down after this past season concluded.

“We had lots of applicants and very strong candidates,” U-Mary athletic director Roger Thomas said. “Applications came trickling in until the very end. That says a lot of our school and the desire of these men to want to be part of us.”

Listed is some background information on the three finalists:

n Herbst: He was in his second year as an assistant at UN-O. Herbst began his coaching career as an assistant at North Iowa Community College (1993-97) before moving to Lincoln Memorial (1997-98).

At North Iowa, Herbst’s team won the 1995 NJCAA Division II championship and had three winning seasons.

The Lincoln Memorial team recorded 19 wins, the most NCAA Division II wins in the history of the school.

Herbst was the head coach at Waldorf Junior College. He also won 19 games his first year, the second most in team history.

Herbst moved on to UND where he coached for Rich Glass from 2000-06. He was the recruiting coordinator for all six seasons and the associate head coach from 2004-06.

After one season at Florida Southern (2006-07) as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, Herbst moved to UN-O as the assistant and recruiting coordinator.

Herbst is a 1993 graduate of Winona State and is a native of Beaver Dam, Wis.

n Heideman: Heideman has 35 years of coaching experience, including 25 at the collegiate level where he compiled a record of 176-120 overall and 110-95 in NCAA Division I. Heideman spent the past six seasons at Washington State.

Heideman began his collegiate coaching career at NCAA Division II St. Norbert’s College (1982-86) where he earned NABC Division II NCAA Midwest coach of the year honors in 1984.

From 1986-95, he was an assistant coach at Wisconsin-Green Bay before taking over the reins from 1995-2002.

His team earned Top 25 national recognition in 1996. He was named the Midwestern Collegiate Conference, NABC District XI and Wisconsin basketball coach of the year that year.

In 2003-03, Heideman served as an assistant coach at Valparaiso before moving to Washington State as an assistant in 2003-06. The last three seasons he was the WSU director of player development.

n Stewart: He was a graduate and former student-athlete at UND.

Stewart has led Peninsula College in Port Angeles, Wash., to three Northwest Athletic Association of Community College titles in seven seasons as a head coach.

After going 3-21 in his first year at Peninsula in 2002-03, Stewart reversed the team’s fortune with a conference title winning record of 23-7 the following season.

Twice named the conference coach of the year (2004 and 2008), Stewart led the Pirates to postseason play five times and placed in four of the tournaments.

In seven years, he has compiled a record of 114-87 with three seasons of 20 wins or more.

Stewart played semi-professionally overseas and helped win the initial Malaysian Basketball League championship in 1995. He has coached at the NCAA Division II, NAIA, junior college, high school and semi-professional levels.

Meas sets mark

U-Mary women’s pole vaulter Colleen Meas reached new heights this past weekend at the Al Cassell Relays in Jamestown.

The freshman from Camano Island, Wash., set a school record with a jump of 12-9. Kristen Schwehr of Bismarck held the old record at 12-3, set during the 2004 and 2005 seasons.

Meas set a personal-best mark outdoors and is now ranked fifth in the nation.

“She was very consistent indoors,” U-Mary coach Mike Thorson said. “Outdoors has been tough for her because of the weather.”

U-Mary will compete in its final meet of the regular season, the MSU-Moorhead Masanz Open on May 2.

Softball team aiming for NSIC tourney

U-Mary’s chances of making it into the Northern Sun tournament has a lot of “what ifs” attached to it.

U-Mary travels to Upper Iowa today for a doubleheader.

If U-Mary were to lose one of those games, their season would end after playing a doubleheader against Winona State on Wednesday.

If U-Mary were to sweep Upper Iowa, but lose two at Winona State, its season would be complete.

Should the Marauders sweep Upper Iowa and split or sweep against Winona State, U-Mary plays Minnesota-Crookston on Thursday at a neutral site.

If U-Mary sweeps Minnesota-Crookston, it is expected that the Marauders will advance into the NSIC playoffs.
