Mayville athletic department faces cuts
By Heath Hotzler
The Forum - 05/31/2006

Growing budget deficits at Mayville (N.D.) State University have forced its athletic department to cut scholarships by one-third beginning next year, according to university Vice President for Business Affairs Steve Bensen.

The deficits caused Mayville State to drop its two-year-old men’s and women’s soccer programs and eliminate its sports information director, an assistant baseball coach, soccer coach and a maintenance worker.

Reads to me like more cuts are inevitable. Pretty sad, but not surprising. Cant' be easy to attract students/athletes with VCSU, UND, Crookston, NDSU, MSU etc.

Thing about cutting soccor is they had a niche to help draw out of area students into Mayville. Going to take some innovative thinking to keep it together.

UND and NDSU may take students away from MaSU but VCSU?
:P
Mayville needs a change in direction.  If you are banking on alums giving money back guess again, it is a teachers college.

College seeks bailout

MAYVILLE, N.D. – Mayville State University faces critical financial problems, and the key to fixing them is attracting more full-time students, campus officials say.

Administrators face a dilemma because they need to cut programs and staff to eliminate deficits, which total $870,000.

But doing that hurts the university’s ability to attract students – its main source of revenue.

That means the campus of about 625 full-time students and 287 part-time students has to do more with less.

To address the deficits, the campus has cut four members of its 170-person staff, reduced tuition waivers by one-third and eliminated the men’s and women’s soccer programs.

Should the taxpayers help Mayville State University with its debt problems?
Talk: What can Mayville State do to attract full-time students and bring in more revenue?
Steve Bensen, vice president for business affairs, said the university is dealing with the most serious financial challenges he’s seen in his 18 years there.

Mayville State hopes it can get some taxpayer relief in state funding to help pay for high fuel costs that have pushed the school’s money problems over the edge.

That, along with increasing enrollment and adequate state funding in the future, is the solution to getting Mayville State on solid ground, Bensen said.

I totally agree with SCC they just need to get rid of the football program. But they most likely won't because that is 40 to 80 kids that they lose at MaSU. And enrollment is a big factor their for them.

The biggest problem their though was the President and anybody that had anything to do with financial duties at that school. They should get rid of them too. Balch leaving is the best thing to happen to that school since the basketball team went to nationals this year. The next President needs have both knowledge of academics and how to run an athletic program also.

Hopefully things can get better cause I don't know if they can get any worse.

MaSU problems didnt happen over night, if they live, it will take a decade to turn this thing around. Money won't solve all their problems.

i think some of the blame should go to older athletic directors...especially the one that was the football coach at the same time and couldn't coach his way out of his own office most days....

not that i hold a grudge

If they close MaSU what would that do to the town of Mayville???? Mayville I really don't think could afford to lose the college.

Yeah no doubt any town would but if they lose the college does it turn into a hoople ND very small population or can it still thrive. Would the town of Mayville try bringing in different businesses?? What is the Town doing if anything to help with the college? Or are they just gonna live and die with the college?
