[align=justify][font=Verdana]Jerry Meyer, Kenmare, has been named as one of the 2006 inductees into the North Dakota Sports Hall of Fame.[/font][/align]
[align=justify][font=Verdana]Meyer, along with Rollie Greeno of Jamestown, and Dickinson native Robin Huebner, has been selected as a recipient of the Cliff Cushman Award. Cushman was a Grand Forks native and a 1960 Olympian. He lost his life in the Vietnam War, but his legacy and inspiration continue.[/font][/align]
[align=justify][font=Verdana]A Rugby native and 1950 graduate of Rugby High School, Meyer earned a varsity letter in football, basketball and track. During his high school years, he was also a team member of two state tournament teams.[/font][/align]
[align=justify][font=Verdana]He continued his education and athletic participation at Minot State University, receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in 1955, and his Master’s Degree from the University of North Dakota in 1965. During his MSU years, he lettered in football, basketball, and track and field.[/font][/align]
[align=justify][font=Verdana]As a team member of the 1952-53-55-55 conference champion teams, he was selected co-captain of both the football and basketball teams in 1954 and 1955, respectively. He was a member of the 1955 NAIA District 12 Champion Basketball Team, which was selected the 1955 ND Team of the Year by the North Dakota Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.[/font][/align]
[align=justify][font=Verdana]His athletic accomplishments were rewarded through his selection to the MSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988 for his individual athletic performance and as a member of the 1954-55 Basketball Champions.[/font][/align]
[align=justify][font=Verdana]Meyer continued to share his talent and athletic abilities when he began coaching various athletic teams. He led the Kenmare High School football team to four separate conference championships in 1959, ‘60, ‘62 and ‘63. He extended his success with the Kenmare High School basketball team as he guided the Honkers to State Class B titles in 1963 and 1965, as well as a second place finish in 1964.[/font][/align]
[align=justify][font=Verdana]His coaching expertise at Jamestown High School enabled him to take 14 teams to the State Class A Tournaments during the 1965-1989 seasons. Under his direction, these teams returned with the state title four times in 1976, ‘78, ‘82 and ‘87, and the runner-up title in 1971, ‘79, ‘85 and ‘86. He accrued numerous regional and eastern Dakota conference championship titles with the teams as well.[/font][/align]
[align=justify][font=Verdana]After a short deviation from North Dakota to Lakewood, Colorado, Meyer returned to Jamestown College in 1991. His proven abilities led the Jimmies to win the first North Dakota College Athletic Conference Championship in the 1993-94 seasons. He then proceeded to take the Jimmies basketball team to the NAIA Division II Men’s National Basketball Tournament, where the Jimmies won the first round against St. Thomas, Miami, Florida, but were subsequently defeated in the second round against Taylor University from Upland, Indiana.[/font][/align]
[align=justify][font=Verdana]The North Dakota Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association honored him with the selection of Coach of the Year in 1966 and again in 1982. He was recognized as the Class A Coach of the Year in 1971, ‘76, ‘78, ‘80, ‘82 and ‘85.[/font][/align]
[align=justify][font=Verdana]In 1990, he was once again honored for his talents by receiving the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Coach of the Year Award for Region 6. In 1988, he was inducted into the North Dakota High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Twice, he and his teams were recipients of the Sportsmanship Award.[/font][/align]
[align=justify][font=Verdana]He continued to challenge himself and earn recognition when he coached the Class A All-Stars in 1978 and 1982, and was assistant coach in 1979, ‘85, and ‘86. Throughout the summer months, Meyer conducted summer coaching camps. Among his other accomplishments are his family: his wife Mavis, his children, and his grandchildren.[/font][/align]
[align=justify][font=Verdana]Meyer, Greeno and Huebner will be recognized during an induction banquet and awards program to be held in Jamestown at the Civic Center on June 10, 2006.[/font] [/align]
