Coach Don Meyer of Northern State died way too early, but then again he lived longer than he should have. He was only 69 when he passed away on Sunday, but he showed his inner strength by surviving an auto crash and cancer for as long as he did.
Coach Meyer is not a North Dakota person, but he coached several North Dakota athletes including Craig Nelson, son of Dave and Tammy Nelson. The Nelson family is truly greatful for the time Coach Meyer spent with Craig, teaching him how to be a leader and a faithful young man.
When Coach lost his leg due to the auto crash he kept it in perspective. As a matter of fact the University put out a bobblehead of Coach with the missing legs and crutches. It was done in good humor but it was also a poignant reminder of what Coach willed himself through. His contributions to charity and peoples' lives have pushed the cancer center in Aberdeen to name the facitlity the Don and Carmen Meyer Cancer Center.
Does anyone have any Don Meyer stories? Any former players that would care to share their feelings on him?
