Week 13 - EDC Tournament

(Live updates and box scores at http://www.grandforksherald.com/article ... ion=Sports)

Well here it is, the last time for teams to show what they've truly got before State. The EDC has been muffed up a little bit by the pummeling of GPR by GFC, as well as the tight win over FS they had recently. This should make tournament time very interesting. Here's the brackets for Thursday night:

Tuesday, February 17th:

2 Wahpeton/Breckenridge at Fargo Shanley 9 (Play-in Game)

All games played at the Purpur Arena in Grand Forks. Games listed in order numerically.

Thursday, February 19th:
[#1] Fargo South - 5 vs [#8] Shanley - 2
[#4] Grafton-PR - 8 vs [#5] West Fargo - 1
[#2] Central - 11 vs [#7] Devils Lake - 1
[#3] Red River - 8 vs [#6] Fargo North - 2

Friday, February 20th:

[#8] Shanley - 2 vs. [#5] West Fargo - 8 (Loser-out Game)
[#7] Devils Lake - 1 vs. [#6] Fargo North - 2 (Loser-out Game)
[#1] Fargo South - 7 vs. [#4] Grafton-PR - 2 (Winner gains State berth)
[#2] Central - 6 vs. [#3] Red River - 0 (Winner gains State berth)

Saturday, February 21st:

[#4] Grafton-PR - 4 vs. [#6] Fargo North - 3 (2OT) (Winner gains State berth)
[#3] Red River - 3 vs. [#5] West Fargo - 2 (Winner gains State berth)
[#1] Fargo South - 4 vs [#2] Central - 1 (Both teams advance to State)

EDC Ranks and State match ups:
1st: Fargo South (Plays Bis. Century at 6:30 PM)
2nd: GF Central (Plays Williston 30 mins after the 11:30 AM game)
3rd: GF Red River (Plays Minot 30 mins after the 6:30 PM game)
4th: Grafton-PR (Plays Bismarck High at 11:30 AM)

Here's my Pre-EDC Bracketology:

Quarterfinals:

Fargo South vs Shanley
Grafton vs West Fargo
Central vs Devils Lake
Red River vs Fargo North

Semifinals:

- Winner Bracket -
Fargo South vs Grafton
Central vs Red River

- Loser Bracket -
Shanley vs West Fargo (Shanley eliminated)
Devils Lake vs Fargo North (Devils Lake eliminated)

Finals:

- Championship -
Fargo South vs Central (Both teams advance -- This game means nothing -- in fact the loser of this game has won state a vast majority of the time. It's a little different this year, Bismarck is tougher than usual and may provide more resistance in the Semifinals of state than previous years if they can get by GPR as the 4th seed)

- State Play-in -
Grafton-PR vs Fargo North (GPR advances, FN eliminated. Could be a closer game than you'd think)
Grand Forks Red River vs West Fargo (RR Advances, WF eliminated)

I'm actually not 100% sure I did the bracketing correctly, but I basically choose the higher seed over a lower seed in every game anyways. I agree with the EDC standings as they are from the regular season.

You have the play-in games wrong. The tournament has a cross-bracket so you do not see the game team you already played. G-PR and WF wouldn't play each other again 2 days later.

With your results predicted, you would have G-PR vs. Fargo North and GFRR vs. WF in your state play-in games.

Wow, I set up the brackets really quick and didn't even realize I did that. Thanks for correcting me. I reset the bracket to make it correct.

Usually both GF and G/PR broadcast on radio. Does either station livestream on the internet? If so, what is the site location? Thanks in advance.

Should be two great games tommorow! Central vs red river......ill give this one to central they have been hot lately(beating south and running up the score on dl) South vs grafton.......Ill give this one to south Look for south too come out strong they cant be happy with the game today. Grafton played great against west fargo(which is not a bad team) should be a great game.

Games should be much closer today meaning predictions are getting to become more guesswork.

Here's my predictions:
[#8] Shanley - 2 vs. [#5] West Fargo - 4 (Loser-out Game)
[#7] Devils Lake - 1 vs. [#6] Fargo North - 3 (Loser-out Game)
[#1] Fargo South - 5 vs. [#4] Grafton-PR - 2 (EN)
[#2] Central - 4 vs. [#3] Red River - 3

Top seeds should continue to prevail, imo.

West Fargo should beat Shanley pending how well Stokke does. If Stokke can stop 30+ shots and not let one in Shanley could win. North should beat Devils Lake (especially after Central pounded them last night). However, DL's backup did let in 8 goals on 21 shots in the third last night, which is basically why Central ran the score up so much.

As for the Semifinal games:

I'll pick South over Grafton - They've run the table with Grafton during the season, and although I know this is the post season and Grafton will be fired up for this game, I believe South will be as well. South just beat a team they should have pounded into the ground 5-2, and let them come back in the end of the game. There's nothing that should fire up a team more than this, they have something to prove. Grafton is doing better, but they have still yet to beat a top seeded team in the state yet, and I don't think they have the depth for it. South is fast up front and big in back, and I think they'll wear down Grafton's first line if they keep up physical play and don't let them capitalize.

I'll pick Central over Red River - Central just came off a 12-1 win and just before that they became the first team in the EDC to knock off South. Central has been doing well and as long as they click on offense a bit they should be able to take advantage of RR's defense complications. However, on the other side, RR has a very strong offensive first line that can capitalize if you give them the opportunity. This should be the best game tomorrow, a battle between a defensive and an offensive team to see who's better.

(Btw, after looking more into the GFC/DL game, I realized that the game was actually pretty close compared to the final score until the 3rd period. DL's backup tender let in 8 goals on 21 shots. That's not very good)

Both Semifinal games should be a blast to watch. Hopefully I can get there for at least part of the South/GPR game and the whole GFC/GFRR game. We'll see.

I will admit that the GFC DL game was closer than anyone (from Central) wanted in the first but it was just a matter of time. Friedig (sp) is a good goalie and does well with positioning. Yes, the backup had a heck of a time but some of the goals in the 3rd would have went in regardless of who was in goal. I won't, however, say that I am confident on who will win tonights game between RR and Central. I agree that RR has a great first line. As the old sports saying goes, you can't stop them, you can only hope to contain them. Should be a fun one to watch.

Four weeks ago, I would have said South wins hands down against GPR. I still say they will but I am not nearly as confident as I was. But I just think South has too much depth for GPR.

Also, thanks to HH for the box scores.

Good games tonight from South and GFC. South really seemed to have bounced back from Thursday and the first 8 minutes of the GPR game to take control. That early goal really seemed to catch South off guard and put them in a groove for the first part of the period. GFC seemed to handle GFRR once Crary was in the box and a few penalties started getting called. Here's the box scores from Friday.

South vs Central was a good game to watch lots of scoring chances for both teams south just put away there chances. Just wondering who picks all edc and is it based on the tournament or the whole year?
