Who are the biggest rivals in the state?

Haha...well after everything that I have read on this web-site I wouldn't be suprised to see it be Devils Lake v.s. Fargo North. But I am a traditionalist so I will say Grafton v.s. Devils Lake, RR v.s. Centeral, West Fargo v.s. Wahpeton, and South v.s. North. Oh, and Devils Lake against Minot has been a large Rivarly over the years.

I'd say Red River/Central is the best in the state.

I would agree. Both those schools are rich with tradition. Also everytime they play it doesnt matter if one is way better then the other because they both will put up a fight. It is such a good tradition because all the players on both those teams usually grew up playing sugarkings or wheatkings together. Now that they have gone to different high schools, it just makes it an even more intense matchup. They always want to beat eachother and have the bragging rights. Another good rivalry that has declined a little in the last few years is north vs. south. It has declined with south being so good these last few years and north just mediocre. But at the same time, all the kids from down south and all the kids from up north hate one anothers guts and would do anything to beat eachother. With all this said, both are fierce rivalries and you can usually expect a great hard fought game between the teams.

The rivalry that gets the most attention and draws the most fans would be South vs. Moorhead hands down.  You cant argue with standing room only and about 4000 fans when they play.

That was a big game but you also have to understand that moorhead gets that kind of attendence for a lot of their games. It was just so big last year because everyone believed that south would win.

The biggest rivalries in the state would have to go to cross town rivals:

 Fargo South - Fargo North
Grand Forks Central - Grand Forks Red River
 Bismarck High - Bismarck Century

Other Notables:

Fargo South - Grand Forks Red River
Minot High - Bismarck High

It's interesting how things change.  Back when I was growing up the big rivarly in the west was Minot and Bottineau.  Williston was a Jr. Gold program back then.  The Bismarks weren't that good either, or at least until around 90 for high and way later on for Century.  Just food for thought.

Minot and Bismarck are huge rivals in every sport including hockey.  No matter how good or bad either team is they always seem to have great games against each other.

In ND, hands down gfrr and gfc. No other rivalry had played more in the state championship then these two. Also, they hold the record for biggest watched game at the REA. And Gf is the biggest hockey town in ND.

Are you sure they hold the record for largest crowd? If so, what was the number?

I thought the record was in 2002 GFC vs GPR.  Upper deck was opened as well and game delay over a half hour to make sure people got in building that were waiting in line

That Grafton - Central championship game came to mind too. I could be wrong, but the announced crowd for that game was over 9,000. I don't think any championship game has come close since the Spoilers one that contest.

When RR played GFC, i think that may have had more then 9,000 if i remember correctly but do not know the exact number.

The attendance was 9,191 for the Grafton - Central championship game in 2002. The previous record was 6,156 for the Grafton - Red River championship game back in 1996. I'm not doubting your claim about the Red River - Central game gfhockey; I'm just backing up my input.

Um little fact for you gfhockey... biggest hockey towns usually occur around College/Pro hockey team's arenas.  If it weren't for UND hockey i think Fargo would have it in the bag.

I would have to say Fargo South and Red River. The last couple of years the South vs. Red River games have been the most exciting (and for championships). They have all been close, except for South's embarrassing loss 0-8.

When I think about hockey Fargo doesn't come into my mind at all. I think I would probably just go to the other side of the river and see what a real hockey town is. Warroad for one. I don't really think GF or Fargo come close to towns like that GF does turn into hockey town when state is going on and during the sioux's season but after that its not much.
